I love my private beach days as an LA native and spent a lot of my weekdays in Malibu in 2024-2025 while working there. Since I never had the chance to explore the beaches there, I decided to drive down from WeHo and spend my afternoon here. It's genuinely a hidden gem, tucked away in a residential neighborhood and "hard to find" in a special and earnest way. The waves were beautiful, people were swimming in the waters even on a gloomy day and I was able to lounge and enjoy my book. The only downside is the lack of restrooms, but parking is relatively easy! read more

I usually carry my wagon with me with blankets and pillows and the necessities so after observing how many stairs there were to get down to the beach decided to go elsewhere. There seems to be a ton of misinformation regarding this beach. Perhaps the MRCA which owns and controls it should do a better job of signage and use instructions. First, read the California law on beach's. Not all beaches are public. The public may walk below Ho tide line- which basically means wet sand but above that may be private property and trespass laws apply. Don't believe it? The Malibu sheriffs will explain it quickly. The entrance at East Sea level IS a private road and gated community. Pedestrian beach access was granted but if you attempt to drive through and park you will be towed. It is a very long walk to LaChuza beach at this entrance. You will pass a sign half way telling you that entrance is a Private beach ( above hi tide line) so walk alllll the way down to the end to the stairs. If you decide to stop on the lawns for lunch and photos you are trespassing. The stairs and entry at Broad beach road is the best access. Parking is limited on broad beach and if you block a driveway or lawn, or litter you will be cited buy the Sheriffs. LaChuza has strict rules about use: Only service animals on leash. The MRCA rangers Will cite you. No alcohol. No smoking or drugs. No fires. Closed at 8:00. If you chose to use the stairs , the beach is at the bottom to the RIGHT. The beach area to the left is Private above the high tide/ wet sand and you will be tresspassimg and they will call the police. LaChuza looks lovely but it can be dangerous. No life guards. No toilets. If you pee or poop-you will be fined. The water is so nice- sometimes but there are strong currents and rips and NO life guards. Very Rocky with many submerged jagged rocks. In winter when the sand is low the water has many mor obstacles- wires- pipes- concrete pilings that can be dangerous. Swimmer beware. During hi tides sneaker waves cover the beach sending all your stuff to Japan. How do I know? I go knocked down and swept out by one. During hi tide the waves cover the entire beach. There are better beach options like Zumba or Leo Carrillo. read more

For me, the best beach on earth, just an awesome hideout paradise with a semi-secret way in that makes it absolutely the most raw, beautiful, cool, special beach. It's only good in July and August, and getting there has a bit of a scavenger hunt vibe. There's a secret door, a smooth walk down a private road, and a pristine gorgeous beach that feels like you left the planet. No bathrooms, no facilities, so you gotta be ready for that. read more

Gorgeous stretch of land. The restrictions help preserve the "private beach" feeling. It's more like the beach under the homes on PCH. It was a neat find until the middle / end of 2018, since then it's been a little difficult. I'll explain the changes in the tips below. Nevertheless, it makes for a fun few hours. "Picnic by the seaside anyone?" I sound so British saying "seaside" LOL. T I P S :: *No restrooms, for someone like me it's literally only a few hours before I have to pee. *Access is tricky, so if your the adventurous kind, have at it! *Steep steps, children can easily handle it but I'd avoid it if your rolling with old folks or have knee problems. *Check the tides before you head over. The water is shallow ONLY when the tide isn't too high, otherwise you'll be swimming with the fishes. *Make sure you park properly or you'll risk getting a ticket. *Pack a snack because it's always a good idea to have food ha, oh and I'm a foodie. read more

We spent a peaceful and enchanting evening at Lechuza Beach. Hearing the waves, watching the birds seeing an incredible sunset. We recommend it to anyone wanting to get away. We used Lechuza Beach western access point (one of three accessways) on Broad Beach Road near PCH. The access gate seemed a bit hidden, but actually quite easy to find. Go through the gate, down W. Sea Level Drive and you'll find couches and stairs leading down to this amazing beach. Add a bathroom and I'll up it to a five star rating! read more

Nice little hidden spot. My buddy turned me on to it. Gave it a 2 and I don't think I'll go there anymore. Just my experience, and here is why Me and my buddy jogged a little bit, then fish and get mussels (have a license). Tried saying hi to some of the people walking their dogs but we were getting the stink eye. Its technically a public beach but that was sort of the warning vibe that some people there were not that happy to see us :) We didn't care, but then after about 30 mins we catch this ranger/security guard behind us at the entrance just looking at us. Then he starts to take pictures of us. This went on long enough for us to realize he was taking pics of us. He was using a regular camera. Pretty sure he didn't mistake us for celebrities and was star struck lol At this point, I'm starting to feel uneasy even though we did absolutely nothing wrong. But as a so called minority, I know this song and dance all my life. The residents and/or the ranger have decided that we are up to no good and/or should not be there. We are 2 Middle Aged guys fishing. We are not drunk or high, and committing no crime.Only thing about us is we don't look like the regulars. The kids that look high hanging out behind the rocks didn't get hassled, people walking their dogs didn't (sign against it). No, the 2 middle aged dudes fishing were the biggest threats. So our pic is now in some database and god knows what it will be used for. Hope you got my good side :) I understand if there is a safety issue etc... and people that break the law need to be held accountable. But I feel like there is more than law enforcement going on here i.e weird residents and power tripping rangers. LAPD patrolls Venice beach (drug and crime galore lol), and I've never seen anything like this there. And I've seen crazy stuff there Ya, this is technically a public beach but I get the feeling some of the residents think it's their beach and the rangers reserve the right to profile or hassle anyone they think should not be there or up to no good. F this. They can have their sheltered entitled corner. There is plenty of coastline for us masses to surf / fish / swim etc... without being treated like criminals, not worth this BS :) read more

I debated leaving this review because I feel bad for the people that live in this area and have random people walking by their houses all day. That being said, it's a really nice beach. It's very private (although it's not actually a "private" beach), but it's not the easiest to access. There's also not a restroom in the area so if you have a small bladder and/or you're not into sea pee - you're probably going to want to skip out on this beach, or make a quick visit with a backup plan. **Backup plan - leave and go left down the PCH a few minutes and there's a grocery market (which has excellent hot food btw - mac n' cheese anyone?). If that exhausts you but you still want the beach, you can keep driving further down to Zuma beach (where you'll find lots and lots of potties). read more

1. Follow the directions you get from Yelp 2. You'll park in a residential area 3. Look for COASTAL ACCESS signs - that will get you to the beach 4. The beach itself is pretty narrow and you'll be right under the decks of the homes there 5. People do bring their dogs, but they were well-behaved 6. High tide will mean you most likely have to leave because there will be very little sand real estate left 7. Yelp does not take you to this beach! It's further down the pch from where yelp originally takes you to ( a park) make a left turn on broad beach road and it'll be down the street on your right hand side , very easy to miss so look out for the pictures that other yelpers posted of the entrance. Upon arrival there was a VOLUNTEER sheriff giving out tickets and once we walked down, the beach was PACKED! We couldn't find anywhere to sit. Oh and screaming kids all over the place. I found the wonderful and uncrowded Lechuza Beach following the maps above. I parked in a ritzy neighborhood, pressed on a magic gate, walked down a short driveway past more ritzy beach houses, and entered a beach that truly made California feel like an escape, a feat in this dirty city. The access gate on East Sea Level Drive was hard to find because the sign for the drive was obscured by a tree and the gate had a no passing sign on it. The sign should not be there according to the California Coastal Commission, a state organization that regulates beach access acreas in Malibu. I have to emphasize again the free and easy parking! These are neighborhood beaches that the oceanfront property owners try to keep people away from. But the beach is not private property in California. This is like trying to say Griffith Park is your private property. The beach is a public space that belongs to all. So get out and enjoy yourself. You'll never be back at Topanga or Zuma again. Well, okay, maybe if you need a restroom or a lifeguard because the hidden beaches in Malibu don't have these things. This. This is it. This is the best beach in Malibu. In SoCal. In California. I still can't believe I found this place. I was driving along the coast, looking for a beach on Memorial Day (yes, I know, I'm crazy). I went to ZUMA and spent an hour just trying to turn around. Literally! When I finally escaped the crowd, I drove down Highway 1 until I found a "Beach Access" sign. I followed this one, and I am so glad I did!! Almost empty, even on Memorial Day! I couldn't believe it! And QUIET!!! Just some families soaking in the sun, no crazy kids drinking or blaring music. Absolutely beautiful. Even the walkway is scenic!!! By far the best beach in SoCal, if not the best beach in California (which I can't believe I'm saying, especially as a San Franciscan!) read more

This place is weird. Beautiful, but a little unnerving. Park your car Broad Beach Road and then walk to the street called "Sea Level Drive". Note that there are TWO Sea Level Drives. The "gate" that everyone speaks of when they talk about how to get to the beach is a gate blocking the entrance to the Sea Level Drive east of Bunnie Lane. The map on yelp is misleading because it appears to be pointing to the entrance at the western-most Sea Level Drive (and for all I know, there's an entrance there too, but I haven't heard of it). Anyway, approach the gate blocking Sea Level Drive. There's a pedestrian entrance on the left. Fiddling with the doorknob a bit should get you in. Walk all the way to the end of Sea Level drive, and there's a few stairs leading down to the beach. I say this beach is unnerving because the area around this beach goes to great lengths to appear private, somewhat unwelcoming and because the stairs leading to the beach sort of seem like they're heading through someone's front yard. I'dve been worried about someone calling the police on me when I was there, except that a nice man with his family was hanging around at the entrance to the beach and he told me to go right on in. But, it was beautiful and pretty empty. I could get used to that. read more

Such a great secluded beach area.The beach is a public area surrounded by very much a residential area, so the entrance can be hard to miss. Parking is very easy and FREE, parking is alongside the street near the entrance. We were there Sunday afternoon and there was only a few families nearby. Towards the end of the day, high tide started coming up so definitely not a beach to spend all day and night, the ocean will come after you. Also the beach isn't safest for swimming, since there are big rocks in the ocean. A cool thing about this beach is that there are plenty of sea life here. There were so many mini mussels, barnacles, sand crabs, etc. So cool to look for them. Overall, I would love to come here again. It's nice and relaxing to get away from LA's consistently crowded beaches. read more

I wanted to spend a nice weekend at the beach with my girl, my 2 little dogs, and some friends. Well, I picked the wrong beach. Never had a problem before, but now the Rangers stopped by our spot and said we were not allowed to have alcohol on the beach. I told them we have always in the past and they said it was never legal, and that we would have to take it back to our car. They asked if were residents in the area. I said no, and they said then, unfortunately, the dogs are not allowed on the beach either. What was I suppose to do now? I had a 90 minute drive to get here, what was I suppose to do? He said, he was sorry, he understood, but I had to take the dogs off now. We packed up everything and headed out to Matador where no one would bother us. Never coming back here if I can't have a beer and chill with my pooches. Just not worth the drive, trying to find parking and then this. Hell, there is no lifeguard, no bathrooms, no food, terrible parking and now you can't have beer and pets. Why come here at all??? read more

Once again people have ruined a secret hideaway beach in Malibu. Private rent-a-cops and real parking control officers make it about impossible to have a relaxing time--if you can even find a legal parking spot. Was told I couldn't bring my dog--even with a leash--so I bailed. Hour and a half wasted trying to find parking, make the hike to the beach, and then returning when told my dog wasn't welcome. I think I will look for other spots from now on. Don't waste your time here anymore. Live and learn. read more

Approximately 1 hr drive from Venice Beach will take you to Lechuza Beach. My absolute favorite Malibu Beach. There are no parking lots, so make sure you find a legal spot on the street. Look for the brown beach access sign and triumph down the stairs to the most beguiling of all beaches.Take up shack in a small coves and just beach away! You'll have a ton of space to yourself. This spot is popular among some surfers, but they stay to the north end of the beach. read more

Tired of all the LA beaches? Or can't find a great beach to visit and chill without getting bothered. Perhaps you'd just want some place that was secluded and away from it all. Then look no more..... One of the best beaches in LA is this location. A total hidden gem and not overcrowded at all. No trash scattered around. Very clean! Smooth and rarely uneven sand. And the best part is this place is BEAUTIFUL and QUIET!!!! Will definitely be coming back here again when I am around Malibu. read more

It's a beautiful walk to the beach... But then it's just a normal Malibu beach. There are a lot of huge rocks in the water so you have to be careful when swimming. There weren't a lot of people when I went on a Wednesday.. So that was good. You have to park on a residential street so you're not guaranteed a quick walk to the beach. Fabulous beach. I'm so grateful that the public has access to this quaint and charismatic stretch of sand along the bluffs just a few miles north of Zuma Beach. Help keep it clean! And although a few reviews have observed that some people do bring their dogs, there are plenty of signs that say 'No Dogs Allowed' and that owner's will receive citations. Awesome beach that is hidden in a neighborhood so I love the fact that it's less crowded and there's free parking! There were quite a bit of people when I came and a lot of people bring their dogs too. It was a nice beach and the entrance is just a very short little stroll and a few steps away from the actual beach itself. Beach had amazing views. Cons was parking having to park 15 min away due to cars being ticked near the beach entrance. No changing rooms or bathrooms. Be prepared to towel change or change in the car for ladies. Also there is loads of pebbles in the water. read more

We visited Lechuza beach on Thanksgiving Day 2014. LA was exceptionally warm around 80s. Had a wonderful time here and walked up to El Matador beach and watched a beautiful sunset. We got off at PCH, made a left turn at Broad Beach. As soon as you make this turn, you will see Sea Level on your right. Park around here if you get a parking spot. At the intersection of Broad Beach and Sea level, you will see a small walkway almost hidden that even says "Private Property". At the end of the walkway, you will see a gate and it looked almost locked. But when we tried to open it, it opened up and after you walk a little, you will see a staircase and you get down to the gorgeous beach. Actually this walkway is very hidden, that initially we walked into somebody's backyard and the lady was kind enough to direct us. Actually 2 other groups were lost too. We did not enter this beach through Broad Beach and Bunnie lane like other reviewers have mentioned. We have been to El Matador beach before and you have to pay for parking there. So this entrance will get you free parking as well as into one of the awesome beaches of Southern CA. read more
