I tend to go on my own to the Sunday Service. I don't feel awkward when I'm on my own, as the people that go are very friendly and will have a chat with you. Now, I enjoy going by for a walk when I'm back visiting. The cathedral is so big and beautiful. The stained glass is just incredible. This is the type of architecture that adds to the medieval atmosphere that is still prominent in York today. Fun fact: it took over 250 years to build it!

My wife visited York Minster to pray and light a candle for her deceased mother and the anniversary…read moreof the outbreak of World War 1, which she has done on many previous occasions when we visit York. She suffers from severe mental and physical disabilities and quiet prayer and reflection brings her comfort. On previous occasions we were directed to a quiet side chapel. On this occasion she was told to sit in an area cordoned off with red rope right near the entrance. It was an exposed, noisy area with a constant flow of visitors passing on both sides. No was no one praying in this area. My wife politely asked a member of staff if there was a quieter more appropriate area where she could pray and the member of staff said he would fetch someone. Eventually a young girl with straight blonde hair appeared wearing an apron and yellow marigold gloves. This young woman failed to introduce herself and was very aggressive in her tone and body language. This woman told my wife "this is the only area available to pray and you do this or leave!". My wife started to become stressed, said that she couldn't pray there and asked "Am I in church?" This woman raised her voice, was waving her arms covered in the long yellow gloves and repeatedly told my wife "this is the only area available to pray and you do this or leave!" and tried to justify this by saying that "we make things to look nice". Faced with this verbal tirade my wife became extremely upset, covered her ears and burst into tears and told this woman she was unwell. She left the Minster in a very distressed state. My wife emailed a complaint to York Minister but received a response from the Head of Audience Operations claiming that she had carried out a full investigation and stated that she "found no evidence of aggression, hostility or disrespect on her part, and I am satisfied that she sought to handle the situation calmly and professionally." Based on what evidence because she didn't speak to my wife and presumably this full investigation soley entailed talking to this unprofessional young woman? We have never experienced such shocking treatment before, especially in a place of worship. Clearly York Minister is just a money making machine and not a safe place of worship or comfort. The fact that staff with such a poor and unsensitive manner are employed in a church is unbelievable.

From what I understand, and this is all hearsay with no research done, Sihk temples are open to all strangers, you are welcomed and offered shelter if needs be. I know a few people who have use this knowledge in India, it gives you a better incite into the religion and culture is you immerse yourself so deeply into something. So perhaps worth a visit if you a feeling the desire to immerse yourself in culture.

Background of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Dev Ji The Gurdwara…read morebuilding was originally a church, but was bought and transformed into a Gurdwara in 1969. The Gurdwara was named after Guru Nanak Dev Ji. At the time, the Gurdwara was one of the biggest in the UK. The Sangat (congregation) grew very rapidly as this was one of only 2 Gurdwaras in Bradford. The Hall was often full to capacity between 1975 and 1978; and a lot of good work was undertaken with children many becoming proficient in reading Gurbani (the Sikh scriptures). Punjabi language classes were taught 7 days a week and school numbers exceeded 100 at the weekends. Akhand Paaths (48 hour, non-stop recitation of the Sikh scripture) and Gurpurbs (birthdays of the Gurus) were particularly well attended with many families staying overnight during Akhand Paats. An arson attack in 1986 resulted in the main Divaan (prayer) hall being destroyed. Phrases like 'atmospheric', 'hidden gem' and 'perfectly preserved' often get bandied about when…read moretalking about old buildings, but this church, tucked away from the busy, touristy streets of old York, fits them better than most. For a start, it really is hidden: the churchyard is secluded behind rows of old buildings, accessed by narrow alleyways. It would not look out of place in a remote village. And it is perfectly preserved: such restoration as was undertaken by the Victorians seems to have been extraordinarily sensitive. It is about as close as you can get to how a church would have looked after the Reformation: dark, quiet, homely, with uneven floors, high box pews and plain walls. With candle-light it must perfectly evoke the late 17th century. It is rightly a Grade I listed building. The church actually dates back to the 12th century, although the current building owes rather more to the 13th-15th centuries: although part of the Chancel dates from the 12th century, the South Aisle and Chapel date from date from 1340, the Tower and North Aisle were built in the first half of the 15th century. The box pews are recorded as being repaired in 1633, and new ones added in 1700-1725. The pulpit dates from 1695. But the church's most notable feature - as is so often the case in York - is its mediaeval stained glass. The windows are decorated and perpendicular in style. The best is the late Perpendicular east window: this dates from 1470-71 and was presented by the then rector, John Walker. The glass depicts saints, including St George and St Christopher, as well as heraldic shields, around a central panel in which a representation of God as the Trinity holding the dead Christ, with the donors at his feet. Other features include a simple 15th century font and wall plaques recalling Lord Mayors of York, including the 'Railway King', George Hudson. The church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

What make this place stand out for me is the 18C pews inside; they're very tall and a whole family can fit inside one and sit facing each other.

The Scargill Christian Community and Holiday Centre is being resurrected with a new community and a…read morenew vision. I recently visited for one of their SummerFest weeks not knowing what to expect from my first visit here. It was fantastic! The location is fantastic. It is only a short drive from Skipton, but you are certainly out in the sticks. It is really dark when it gets dark! The community own a large estate which provides you with a range of walks to experience, and in all directions all you can see are dales, dales and more dales! The sleeping accommodation is pretty basic. You do get a sink in your room but toilets/showers/baths etc are shared in each block. For SummerFest you have the option of camping (thankfully we didn't chose this given the wet weather!) However there are a range of different communal rooms in which to spend your time including a library, the chapel, and a number of snugs! The food was fantastic served in the dining room. There are plenty of self service tea and coffee spots/mini kitchens throughout the centre for your use in between meals. The community is headed up by the Rev. Phil Stone and wife Diane, and supported by Adrian and Bridget Plass (yes the author!). The rest of the community is gradually forming and is expected to increase in size over the next few years as the centre develops. Extensive building plans are at planning permission stage, which will bring the centre up to date and provide greater opportunities in the future. The SummerFest programme was fantastic quality and included a range of activities to suit all ages/tastes. Each morning is started by morning worship in the chapel, followed by a couple of bible study slots which were very interactive and engaging. Afternoon activities included drama workshops, song writing, circus skills, nature walks, fell walking, hand bells, and exploring the Scargill Pathway. The evening entertainment included high quality, headline acts such as Jude Simpson (who left my sides aching after so much laughing), and Philippa Hannah. The night was rounded off by an evening 'chat show' hosted by Adrian Plass and friends which included interviews, up and coming musicians, jokes and a very special Scargill's Got Talent slot. All in all a very enjoyable week. They have a varied programme for the rest of the year and I will certainly be looking to return in the near future, even if just to enjoy some retreat time in the Yorkshire Dales.

This parish hall is a wonderful centre for the Headingley community. I have been to Iyengar yoga…read moreclasses here for years and have always appreciated the calm environment. The building is made out of real Yorkshire stone and its blackened facade reminds you Leeds was once an industrial centre. It is a piece of history amongst the fluctuating residents of Headingley. It houses plenty of other communities too - baby ballet, a baby singing group, a choir, karate lessons, a latin reading group and even a wine group (in a church?!). There are rooms available to hire out and the only downside in my experience is that the hall is a bit cold on a winter evening!
