The Gurdwara was named after Guru Nanak Dev Ji. At the time, the Gurdwara was one of the biggest in the UK. The Sangat (congregation) grew very rapidly as this was one of only 2 Gurdwaras in Bradford. The Hall was often full to capacity between 1975 and 1978; and a lot of good work was undertaken with children many becoming proficient in reading Gurbani (the Sikh scriptures). Punjabi language classes were taught 7 days a week and school numbers exceeded 100 at the weekends. Akhand Paaths (48 hour, non-stop recitation of the Sikh scripture) and Gurpurbs (birthdays of the Gurus) were particularly well attended with many families staying overnight during Akhand Paats. An arson attack in 1986 resulted in the main Divaan (prayer) hall being destroyed. From what I understand, and this is all hearsay with no research done, Sihk temples are open to all strangers, you are welcomed and offered shelter if needs be. I know a few people who have use this knowledge in India, it gives you a better incite into the religion and culture is you immerse yourself so deeply into something. So perhaps worth a visit if you a feeling the desire to immerse yourself in culture.

St Mary's church has always been a great church for weddings, christenings and sadly funerals too…read moreof which I have been to many. The size of the church internally is ideal for weddings and seats hundreds of people. It stands proud on the outskirts of the shopping area and is always nice in the summer months with a clock you can see for miles. Bell ringing can always be heard across the valley and functions, services and clubs use the church on a regular basis.

The building itself is an interesting one, having undergone major restructuring more than once in its history; the part of the building that was originally used for services now appears to be some sort of Sports Hall! The facilities all round seem to be very good -- the kitchen in particular is worthy of note. Given the warmth of the people there, if I lived in Rawtenstall I expect I would happily be able to make this place a spiritual home.

Friendly Headingley church with something for everyone. There are five congregations (mostly called…read moremission communities) with more in the pipeline. Sunday morning at Headingley (10.30) is family-orientated, with singles, students, older people, and loads of kids and teenagers too. Huge fun junior church with groups for all ages, very popular and kids bring their friends too. Lots of people stay for a nice lunch every other week, and there's always coffee and biscuits. Evening service (6.30) smaller but more focussed - current teaching programme on singleness/sex/friendship/etc, but not just aimed at students. 'Four' meets at 3pm and has a higher proportion of young professionals and students, as well as some older people, kids and normal people who don't fall into any of the other categories! Also congregations in Horsforth and Adel. Non-believers, seekers, sceptics enthusiasts and notbeenforages people all welcomed and accepted.

Imagine how God feels! I have never been moved to visit the church in a religious capacity, however. Like many churches these days, the hall acts as a community space. I have been to a few yoga and dance workshops here and the space is really great. Even though it is on the Otley Road, when inside it is very peaceful. At the back there is a large green area which is also very pleasant. I'm sure many community take advantage of this space by meeting here.
