Due to its gargantuan size and old world architecture, Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) is more on the lines of basilica status, which in church terms is as grand as it gets. I have only been here a couple of times, but each experience was a bit like stepping back in time. While many churches in the area tend to slant more modern, OLPH shines with its dated look. The main church is cathedral worthy and the lower church functions quite well as opposed to other basement layouts. Yet there are subtle things, such as the shiny floors and lighting. It's not a bright church in the least, but the interior has the ambiance of a concert hall with a bit of antiquity. It sounds a little crazy, but one just has to see this place at both day and night and not see the same thing. In terms of things I think that could be better, I've seen them go overtime often and I wish they'd update the rows and pews. Knees are sore just typing this. In terms of the mass schedule, it's as versatile as I've seen anywhere. There are Sunday masses in English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), and Vietnamese. They split time between the main church and lower level, which means folks don't have to miss out on anything.

In January, Father Lawrence and I arranged to have our wedding at CCBR. He agreed in a verbal conversation to officiate our weeding with our pastor assisting him (since our pastor completed our pre-marital counseling). One month before our wedding and after our invitations were mailed out, Father Lawrence told us to find a new church since he did not want to have an assistance during the ceremony and do not want photography on the day of our wedding in his church. My fiancé' called to reasoned with him and agreed that we are okay with omitting the assistant pastor, but his anger kept boiling. At this point, we have no other place to get married. We decided to move forward but Father Lawrence and his assistant Carmen Chin continue to call us leaving angry and rude voicemails without reasonable cause. The harassment has been unbearable. We are so surprised and hurt by all of this! We thought the church and their leaders should exemplify Christ- be loving, kind, graceful and forgiving, but we see these people differently now.

I am writing this in November 2022, and having been a member of CCBR for about four years, I can vouch for the fact that it is one of the friendliest, most spiritually authentic churches I have ever attended. The building and its grounds are large and impressive, but the congregation is small and dedicated; our current vicar is a humble, down-to-earth gentleman whose kind and non-judgmental nature reflects the welcoming spirit of the parish. CCBR's liturgy generally follows the classic 1982 Book of Common Prayer and Hymnal, but the parish's general stance is modern and socially progressive. As for being LGBTQ+ friendly, Christ Church Bay Ridge continuously and publicly displays the rainbow flag -- a courageous statement in this strongly conservative-leaning neighborhood. The congregation and liturgical staff include both hetero and LGBTQ+ members. In summary, for this parish, "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You" is more than just an empty motto.
