I'm seeing a couple of others who have a similar experience to what I am having. The sales person promised more results than what was provided. In fact, after being charged over $5000, I am now being told it will cost another $5000 to achieve the results they confidently said would be achievable with my initial payment. Legacy will not let you speak directly with your researcher and you do not get an itemized report of how your purchased hours were utilized. My experience is still unfolding. They have not offered to do a better job, closer to what was promised after months of time, and delivered late still. Instead, they are seeking more money, doubling the costs to over $10,000 (!). We'll see what happens but I do not get the sense they are willing to acknowledge that they over promised and under delivered on a project where they were well compensated. read more

I contacted them in December of 2023 to try and find when my family came to America. After 6 months of "researching" they told me they couldn't do anything without a DNA test which I was hesitant to do. After being told multiple times they couldn't be successful without a DNA test I relented and had one done with the company they recommended (FamilyTree DNA). After getting the results, the company placed me in the wrong family. When i questioned the results, it was treated more like an episode of Maury rather than a serious query. I was then told to do a second DNA test, which i did and that test placed me back in the correct family. When I asked about a refund or any sort of compensation for being told my parents weren't my parents, i was told i would be contacted and then no one ever reached out. I feel like an absolute idiot hiring Legacy Tree Genealogists more than $11K to be provided with the information I already have equipped. I have been too numb to even look at this clump of nothing a second time. After paying $5600 initially, and notified LTG how disappointed I was with their effort. I was told they needed more time to address a list of goals and could accomplish this with another $5600. And now I have just received the second research, which is worse than the first. I have learned and will no longer be a targeted sucker; I am declining further work. I will go back to doing my research. And I feel 1 star is too high for this crappy piece of so-called research. read more

Let me begin by saying that the person who contacted me after I submitted the quote form did so right away and was perfectly professional. That being said, as someone who actually knows their family history & wanted a few overseas documents to round out my research, I found $5600 to be utterly outrageous. I have the money to do it, but between air miles and knowing how to score great deals, I can fly myself to Greece, minimum business class, for about $1,500 (I'm not kidding.) Spend a few grand shopping, enjoy some luxury hotels, visit extended family & do the search myself! Here's the thing: I know exactly where my grandparents (& the rest of my family) lived. Unfortunately, there are a handful of documents I'd like to track down that are solely Greek because not everyone immigrated. I have names, towns, their trips abroad... I mean, my family was in shipping! I puzzled over how best to go about this which is why I got the quote. The fact that they don't refund your money if they can't do the work (especially in cases where someone can literally hand them a pile of documents, photos, deeds, a lot!) & the mixed reviews made me back out before giving them the job. I know they say they do the work, but I genuinely have to question the people they pay in Greece to do the work, seeing as Greek authorities won't talk to 'Xeno' and don't trust outsiders - esp the LDS church. How many of the hours they spend aren't so much researching as they are trying to bribe authorities to give them what they need? I found a person in Greece who is doing what I need for so little money I will almost certainly give him more when he delivers. He's already found several documents for an extremely reasonable (almost unbelievable) price. Simply put, genealogy isn't all that hard if you know where to start & you are even mildly good at research & you're not against reading. (A Tip: If you don't know anything at all, may I suggest starting with a DNA test before digging in to archives?) In my case, pulling together US archives for my immigrant (I'm 1st Gen) family was the simple part. The real place where most immigrants will run in to any kind of roadblock is with the overseas records - especially in countries like Greece and Italy as records often aren't digitised & those that are tend to (understandably) be kept far away from the LDS church & their archives. It's good for our culture, but not so great for overseas research without help. I can say I appreciated the professionalism of the person I spoke with, but there are local searchers who may well be willing & able to help you for much less money. Unless you're almost certain your family goes back quite a ways in America, Canada, England & maybe Australia, I'd say that you're essentially gambling $5,600+ on a service that may or may not deliver results. Keep in mind that in Greece, even with the neat constant war with Turkey, there are many records that are not actually lost or destroyed. Italy is very similar. They often exist - it's usually a matter of the right people & to Greeks, the 'right people' is not synonymous with simply being able to speak the language & being in the same country. I have very mixed feelings about this service. It could certainly be valuable, but when you have almost everything you need, it's much harder to justify an expensive gamble (I hate Vegas no matter how seemingly good the odds) in the event that they turn up nothing. I'd make sure you ask a lot of questions & don't think emotionally when you inquire. I will get what I need, but I simply can't recommend them in good faith when I think of people who may have a 'good case' only to have it go south when they may really need the money. It takes advantage of people who are new, intimidated or potentially not resourceful when it comes to genealogy research - whatever the reason. read more

Legacy Tree found my biological father. I had tried to do this myself, but I didn't have their expertise at understanding how DNA is read. I will be forever grateful to them for the peace of mind this has given me in answering the things that have puzzled me about why I am so different than my siblings. I have subsequently been able to find out so much about my father through newspaper articles and through academic books he wrote in the 1970s. The consultation was very helpful in extending my agenda for further research -- after the conversation, the contact was also very helpful in providing a list of all the suggestions and pointers to additional resources that had been mentioned. I contracted with Legacy Tree Genealogists because my family was not able to find any information about my great grandfather other than his name, that he was born in Denmark, and that his birth year was approximately 1859. I was very disappointed when the report came back, because there was no new information about him. However, they did offer us two new clues: A newspaper article that suggested he may have had a different first name, and a list of DNA matches that probably were connected to me only through my great grandfather. Over the next two weeks I contacted all of the DNA matches that I could. I also search all posted family trees for those DNA matches. And yes, I found my great-grandfather! So, don't be discouraged if your Legacy Tree report doesn't find what you are looking for. They are good researchers, and their clues may help you finish the job on your own. read more

I hired the LTG in 2022 for research for my grandfather birth certificate in Spain. I suported the researcher's team with two marriage certificate, one stated that my grandfather was born in CÁDIZ (This was my GOAL set) and the church certificate stated that he was born in Málaga. I've done myself a research in Málaga and there was not the place because I requested already to the civil registry and they sent a "negative certificate". I purchased a package of 25h from Legacy Tree Genealogists which costs U$2750. They ignored my original GOAL they have searched only in 2 places in CÁDIZ and then tried to find something in Malága. They simply shifted my GOAL on researching in CÁDIZ. The client when interested on purchasing a package has to make a full deposit in order to get the research started. LEGACY TREE GENEALOGISTS are a FRAUD. They will go through their own resources such as data, archives etc, they do not make any onsite research. If you are reading this review pay attention that you can do it by yourself just go to FAMILYSEARCH.ORG and you can start your research. What they do is useless and do not worth the money. They provided a ridiculous services and do not care about customer satisfaction. DO NOT THROW YOUR MONEY THROUGH THE WINDOW. To sum up Legacy Tree Genealogists act like this : They offer their service (terrible) in researching your ancestors and if the customer did not find it satisfactory then it's not the Legacy Tree Genealogists problem anymore. From the beginning, customer service appeared convincing and open to shape the research (Basic 25) to my requests. After 9 months of waiting (I had been informed of some delays), I was handed over a report from which emerged a significant number of methodological flaws in the research process. Quite predictably given the flaws described below, the project was unable to identify the slightest information about my family's ancestors. According to the project report, the LT researcher had used up all the hours/money credit to essentially go through a whole lot of online search engines, all of which without exception were unable to locate even my closest' of ancestor's trace. This would be a plausible approach, if I hadn't spent a good month at the beginning of the project feeding LT with every bit of picture or family document I could dig out and gather (at times for a fee through formal institutional processes), at least two of which represented pretty strong leads a good researcher would have jumped on right away. There were no traces in the project report of any of these threads having been used at all in the process. To my question about it I was provided two different, but complementary answers: i) the project I had purchased did not include sufficient hours to perform the kind of research that would have been required, if my threads were to be followed. Going down that line would allegedly have used up all my credit in one or two single steps with even less chances of finding any useful informatio; ii) the project was so complex that it involved checking scanned records, page by page (very difficult indeed, and even more so in another language than English... at this point I have to add that LT claimed that they had lots of native speakers in their team). What is more, according to LT this search needed to happen in two different locations, because, according to the information I had provided, there was a doubt about the true place of birth of the ancestors we were trying to locate. This step was allegedly necessary to make sure to leave no stone unturned and it should not be underestimated. Not convinced by these arguments and prompted by a glaring factual mistake in the report that suggested methodological flaws that could have been easily avoided through a simple google search, I took up to google myself, identified the email address of the local authorities of the supposed place of birth of my closest ancestor and submitted a request to these authorities to locate all existing records (birth and marriage certificates in our case) of 3 specific persons we wanted to locate in the first place. This took me about 30 min. A complete reply with all the requested certificates was received within a matter of days (weekend included), which confirmed my suspicions of Legacy Tree nevery having searched the right documents in the right place, despite the information (and the huge amount of money) collected from me. The factual feedback, similar to the above, provided to LT, was met with explanations about how human error occurs. Recognizing to have used "some research time inefficiently", LT did offer to reimburse me the equivalent of 4 hours. Needless to say that I find this offer offensive, given the fact that the entire research was built up on wrong methodology, leading to a completely inconclusive 25h project. After my several attempts to get my arguments across to some manager at Legagy Tree, the company started ignoring my correspondence altogether without offering further refund nor alternative solutions. The whole experience discouraged me to pursue my journey. read more

My brick wall was my great grandmother in County Cork Ireland. I gave Legacy Tree my information that I had gathered, and set for them to find out which of the four Honora Coughlin's I had found to actually determine which was mine. They throughly searched each one and found one of them to be my best bet as to my GGMother. I then learned her mother and fathers names, and were they came from. Now when I can take that long awaited trip to Ireland, I will know where to go to see where I came from. They first take your thousands and promise they can break down walls. I never saw one broken brick. You never receive an itemized bill of what they do with your thousands of dollars. You contact your investigator and she's too busy to talk with you about finding your loved one. They keep adding to your bill. I was told, you and your brother need to join Ancestry, you need to join 23andME, and we need your brother's Y chromosome. Plus they lost my brother's Y chromosome and DNA sample. I wasn't informed until the end when it was too late. Then when time is up, they dangle the carrot and say rates are increasing to $3,000, so pay up now. I asked for the results and she would not give them to me. She told me she had to go on vacation and I would receive information on my grandfather after she was back from vacation. Then she wants me to help with her farm house that housed Native Americans in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She wanted me to help her with benefactors. WAIT A MINUTE - I paid her thousand of dollars and she wants me to help her for FREE! When I received information on my grandfather, the investigator informed me they only used information I provided them. They dug up NO NEW INFORMATION! All the information I received was erroneous and bogus! They are lazy, corrupt, party and do no original work. My husband is a college professor who teaches business practices and operations. He calls Legacy Tree a SCAM and FRAUD! Don't walk away, run away from this corrupt organization that's parties and drinks on our dime. Their motto is "Party and Steal our Money!" read more

Please don't contract Legacy Tree Genealogists. After two years of research and a ton of money spent, it is hard to believe how bad the quality of the report they had the courage to send me. I feel my 10-years old could have done a better job. And believe I am not even talking about the quality of the research (which was dreadful to say the least), but the writing, unbelievable. STAY AWAY FROM LEGACY TREE GENEALOGY!!!! If you don't mind throwing away money fine, BUT, if you DO care about your money, STAY CLEAR!!!!! I won't sat the amount I spent TRYING to find out about my Family Tree. They asked me for all the information I had to "help them out" and, ALL the did was to regurgitate the information I gave THEM!! I also spent extra getting documents!! THOSE documents are so blurred, they can't be read!!!! I've lodged TWO COMPLAINTS with the BBB and the company is believed!!!! All I get from the company is blah, blah, blah!!!
