I am very impressed with SLC Bookkeeping and Matt R. specifically. I was looking for help with my books (I own a small retail business) and had a friend who pointed me to SLC Bookkeeping. Matt followed up my email almost immediately and then gave me a call also. I was overwhelmed with how honest and helpful he was. Matt gave me great advice on what to do for my business, and even told me that honestly he didn't believe they were a good fit for my business given my finances. Matt told me outright that he figured it wasn't worth it to hire them given my situation and their cost. I greatly appreciated him telling me the truth rather than just taking my money. The advice he gave was sound also, he spent probably 30-45 minutes without charging me anything to give advice for programs to use, simple ways to integrate programs, and even pointed me at another accountant who might be more inline with what I need. No more shoe boxes!! I have been a small business owner for 14 years. Over that time I have had a few bookkeepers and they did their best but nothing was every very clear to me. After giving up on small operators and local folks I went on a journey (google) to find someone who knew what they were doing and I am so glad found the SLC team. The set up process was long and complicated and you should know you are in for a very thorough experience when you hire them. The fees are daunting to a company my size but it is the best investment I have made in my business. They started from scratch and built my QB on line that is correct and detailed and I can feel confident that not only is my data accurate for tax purposes but I am finally able to leverage the historical data to forecast for growth and avoid costly future mistakes. Derek is one of the most amazing people I have ever encountered. He has been my savior through the entire process. He is part time cheerleader, occasion stern father figure and continuous advocate for me and my business. I would not be in the position to even ask for forecasting without his efforts. I was honestly skeptical about offloading accounting responsibilities to a remote/cloud situation but have been most pleasantly surprised. It's not a 100% solution to all of our accounting needs, but for the 85% it does cover it's been amazing. By IRS standards we're a "small business", but with 11 employees and a ton of accounting, I'm sure we're not the only ones who don't believe there's anything SMALL about being a "small business", especially when it comes to accounting. We've been able offload the accounting piece that was a part-time job for one of our team members (small business = many hats) allowing us to focus on growing the business. There's only so many hours in the day, so for us the value that brings is priceless. I'd highly recommend Matt and his team to anyone in a similar situation. read more

I write this as someone who has been in business for myself for over 6 years and knows a bit about bookkeeping and accounting from working closely with financial professionals and doing my own books for many years. I am also a professional accountable to a licensing board and have dealt with many clients that have had complaints and know how they should be handled. I hired this company for specialized knowledge of product-based businesses in general and restaurant bookkeeping in specific. Their motto is "Businessmen by trade, adventurers by heart" Ask yourself, do you want the people you entrust your business finances to to view it as a trade and not have their heart in it? A trade is an occupation at best, not a profession or a responsibility--a job, and in the case of this company apparently a nuisance. I lost $1680 in fees (their fees are more than twice the industry standard), many countless hours of my own auditing the books when they completed them and about $500 dollars paid out to other bookkeepers to audit and correct their work. In the end I still feel like I got off easy because I could have suffered a far greater cost if they had continued on with my bookkeeping. It was a hard lesson learned. Work was not started in a timely fashion (10 days after agreement signed --in late April, a red flag when a financial professional tells you they are "really busy" in late April), updates were not made in a timely fashion, my concerns were dismissed, my instructions were overlooked or ignored. The work they did, which I ended up re-doing with my accountant and bookkeeper in a week, took them 2 months to deliver in a completely unusable form. The work itself had material errors which seriously underestimated my sales tax liability and could have led to fines, penalties and ultimately the revocation of our seller's permit. Since this was a clear breach of contract, I asked for a refund. This was when things turned ugly. I was met with excuses ("our approach is different") denials, and fabrications ("its not our fault you hired someone else mid-job" after they indicated the job was finished.) Since the work was completed in a state other than my own, a small claim is practically impossible. Their response to this review would likely be that they wanted to have a conversation with me about the work, but since my prior 5-10 conversations with them had been fruitless and they would not acknowledge any wrongdoing despite being showed reams of documentation in 20+ emails, I declined that offer. At no time were my complaints escalated, and despite that this is a 6 person or so firm, I was never contacted by the head of the company. They continued to allow me to be handled by an employee that I was clearly in conflict with. This is customer relations 101. I was told that he would be "drawing a line in the sand" with me, for unclear reasons, but I did not appreciate being threatened. Since they are not accountable to any licensing board or in my case, any legal action (much of their business is across state lines) hiring them is a risk on many levels.
