The class times work with our schedule. My daughter (3 year old) started her jiu jitsu journey here and went from being scared and hesitant, to now looking forward to class. Mica is the person who brought jiu jitsu to Las Vegas, he is the OG. He's an excellent instructor as "close to the source" as you'll find. Amazing techniques encompassing everything from modern leg lock games to the stuff Helio and Carlos worked on in Brasil. The facility is world class, with two giant mat areas, every class has a world champion and at least 5 black belts. You will probably be the rest round in this house, everyone kicked my butt. Giant lockers for make and females, showers, cars are in a safe space. I checked out all the academies, did internal references, and I can honestly say you won't find better.

Last month I took a self-defense class sponsored by LVMPD at a different martial arts studio and I…read moreenjoyed it so much that I decided to sign up for another one. This self-defense class took place at 9th Isle BJJ (stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), which is close to North Las Vegas airport. I live in Henderson, so this martial arts studio was a bit of a drive from my house, but it was worth it! I was required to sign three different waiver forms that were emailed to me before participating. This place is in a complex that's mostly office space, but otherwise it's very easy to find off the main road. The inside is literally a warehouse, so while it was a little chilly when I first entered, I didn't feel chilly anymore once I started moving around. We were instructed by Professor Junebug (?), who owns 9th Isle BJJ with his wife. While I did have fun and got a nice workout in, at the same time it was a little difficult than the last self-defense class I went to, because most of the moves had so many steps to them and it was hard to process all of them at the same time. Three other instructors who worked there helped everyone guide us step by step and correct our moves if possible. Everybody there was very friendly and helpful and they all motivated me to continue taking self-defense classes in the future.

It was super cool and inspiring to see a female Judo black belt. I was welcomed with open arms and everyone was nice and respectful. The Saturday class was awesome. We wormed up, learned some judo technique (achi waza) and ground technique too (newaza). Sensei Raq has tons of knowledge and gave me great tips to improve my Judo. It's evident she enjoys teaching! Shout out to Sensei JT as well (also in this picture) who is a great training partner and great coach too. I will be back when I'm in town again.
