It is a very small PO so you cannot fit very many people in there at one time. However, they do provide all the services required by the Post Office and they are more than happy to help you out if you are unsure as to how and when to send anything. They also stock a range of mail stationary like the boxes etc. They also sell a really nice range of Greetings Cards at very reasonable prices. In fact they are a range that I have never seen elsewhere. You can also buy local gifts from here like tea towels, calanders etc. This is a well run and maintained PO with a couple of parking spaces out the front.

A National Trust property situated near Ticknall in Derbyshire, Calke Abbey is set in stunning…read morecountryside. The interior of the house hasn't been restored and is fairly unimpressive - but the grounds and gardens are lovely. If you're feeling energetic there are various long walks that can be done around/through the parkland (leaflets available at the ticket booth I think with suggested routes), or just wander around the church and gardens. The walled gardens are really pretty and tranquil. There's also a gift shop and tea room which serves lovely scones - perfect for afternoon tea, although it can get quite busy at weekends and Bank Holidays. The perfect time to visit Calke Abbey is in springtime when the lambing takes place. Several hundred lambs are born which you can see - they're so cute! You have to pay for car parking (£3.60) and then separately for the house/garden, although NT members get in free.

Felt like i was in the secret garden! I also loved the sundial situated outside the main house. The church on the grounds, St Giles is also worth a visit, small but still used. the views are lovely. As a National Trust member i entered the grounds free of charge so i defintley recommend that you become one as you will want to visit Calke abbey more then once.

There are never enough cashiers available, waiting time is ridiculous and one of the staff (blonde lady with glasses) is one of the most rude and arrogant people I have ever met. Avoid if possible!

So, St. Nicolas Place was another 'stumbled upon' scenario today. I love the fact that I stumbled…read moreupon the largest collection of medieval buildings in the city, entirely by accident. I'm not sure that sort of thing happens every day... Of course, the down side of these things being entirely haphazard is the fact that I didn't coincide my accidental visit with the opening times, so the entire complex - which consists of the Tudor Merchant's House, St. Nicolas' Church and the Old Grammar School - was closed. However, as they are simply bang splat in the middle of Kings Norton, just off the Green, of course you can still wander around the complex, admiring the buildings from the outside. Which I greatly enjoyed doing. To be honest, that was perfect for me - there was enough information on the boards outside each building, and seeing as each element was very impressive externally, I'm not sure what more I'd have got out of going inside. They do do guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays, which I'm sure are worthwhile, and you'd find out more information on those. But I was happy to simply stroll around the Place, admiring the black and white Tudor frontages, the old stone church with its immense spire, a peaceful graveyard (yes, I have spent more time in Birmingham graveyards than average recently...) and the lovely little pathways that connect it all. I have made a mental note to return when the buildings are actually open. Watch this space.....

Our children's authors retreat took us on a truly fascinating tour of Belvoir Castle (pronounced…read morelike "beaver," because the English hate the French lmao). From the moment we arrived, the history and grandeur of the place were palpable. Our tour guide was an absolute gem! Her charm and delightful demeanor instantly reminded me of Mary Poppins - a comparison that probably screams "American tourist," but it's the most fitting image I can conjure! This adorable British lady, likely in her 50s with straight blonde shoulder-length hair, was an absolute ray of sunshine. As an art historian, she brought the castle and its inhabitants to life with a wealth of captivating stories and historical insights about the family who still call Belvoir home to this day. We even had the surreal experience of the current Duchess casually walking through our group - a seemingly ordinary brunette woman in a suit, walking barefoot! It truly underscored the fact that this isn't just a museum; it's a living, breathing family home. My favorite story was the one of Charles Cecil John Manners, 6th Duke of Rutland. Our tour guide showed us a portrait of him looking very Mr Darcy-like. She called him very inept and useless, as he was a leader of the House of Commons for only 3 weeks. But what she appreciated about him was the fact that he fell madly in love with a woman and wanted to marry her, but his family thought she wasn't good enough for them. When she got married off to someone else, the duke was so sad, he swore that if he couldn't marry her, then he would never marry at all. He kept his word, and died without ever marrying. He did scandalize society by giving his mistress a yacht in his will when he died. We also had the privilege of seeing the famous Henry VIII painting, a powerful reminder of the castle's rich historical connections. After seeing the painting in history books and the Royal Diaries volume of Elizabeth I (I grew up obsessed with the Royal Diaries published by Scholastic), it was surreal to see this painting in person. The afternoon culminated in a delightful high tea, the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere and discuss all we had learned. Finally, a leisurely stroll through the breathtaking gardens provided a serene and beautiful end to our visit. Belvoir Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into English history and aristocratic life, brought to life by wonderful storytelling and the unique experience of seeing it as a living family home.

Their website suggests that Belvoir Castle essentially invented this great British concept. To be honest while the location is wonderful and the site is picturesque, the cream tea disappointed. £30 each but while the entire tea room was empty they crammed 5 of us at a single table that would have been fine for 2 or maybe 3 (why not push 2 tables together?). They had to cram the trays together too tightly and hence cram everything together. Because 1 of our group has prawn allergy they removed the prawn option totally for us all (maybe because they had to cram all together on the same plate). This left just 3 types of sandwich and the staff had problems knowing which was which. It seemed to be chicken (nothing special), egg (I hate egg sandwiches) and wafer thin cucumber sandwiches. In terms of the scones, Sainsbury's scones are bigger and tastier. Honestly none of us ate very much. The choice of teas was great and we all had two Pots each. Wouldn't go again sadly.

There are some great objects - the mosaics and wall paintings are unmissable, some of the best in the country. It is free to get in (so good in the school holidays!) and they hold regular special events. There is a free brochure you can pick up that lets you know when the events are so that's quite handy. They also hold an enquiry service so if you dig up any archaeology in your back garden you can take it in and get it identified!! The staff are always polite and friendly and will go out of their way to answer any questions you have. It looks like it could do with a bit of a refurbishment, but I guess they need the council to give them some money - but the displays are really good despite this. Toilets and museum are always clean and there is good disabled access (once you've gone all the way round the site and got in through the car park!)

They invited me to have a look around and directed me to the Guild Hall Museum that I originally set out to see. Like, many museums in the UK, Jewry Wall is open to the public and free of charge. The day I visited there was some sort of sword fighting demonstration taking place outside. I don't think I managed to see all the museum has to offer as I think I missed most of the ruins outside the main building. This museum focuses on the local history of Leicester. It doesn't take much time to go around and see everything - would recommend stopping by.

I have a huge fondness for Sapcote library. When I was a kid my mum worked as a caretaker there so…read moreI used to spend ages there when it closed and have it all to myself (almost). A lot has changed about the place since then but it's still essentially the same. They have the usual things you'd expect of a library - childrens section, reading chairs etc. New additions to the library include Internet access, the 1881 National Census, photo scanning, word processing, e-mail and colour printing which are all available free of charge. There is a small car park to the rear. It's a lovely little local library which is worth a visit.
