We "rented" the railroad for our daughter's birthday party, and it was fantastic. The guys who run…read moreit--on essentially a volunteer basis--were great with the kids. For $75 (a BARGAIN) they ran the train as our own private railroad for 4 hours. There are also some historical buildings (and a few re-creations) and old, retired, "real" trains (steam engine and a caboose) on the fairgrounds near the railroad--so there's some other cool stuff to see. (Note that you can't go in to any of these buildings outside of the annual Glenn County Fair in May.) There are several grassy areas and some picnic tables that served as lunch spots for our guests. PLUS there are restrooms near the train "depot" area--near the old train depot and 1-room school building. (The restrooms are old and small, but they were very clean and nicely maintained.) it looks like the railroad has had a few web pages over the years, but there hasn't been much updated lately and some are no longer up and running. However, it's short enough that you can simply hug them to you for the 15-20 seconds required for this. Orland can be very hot in the middle of the summer, so a scheduled event could be canceled due to extreme heat conditions. (This would be a big disappointment, but nobody would have much fun if it's that hot.) You'll need to do some paperwork to get approval from the Glenn County Fairgrounds and the Orland Police, plus you'll need liability insurance (which you may have to purchase for the event), but it was all worth it. There are no restrooms at the usual picnic area (near the intersection of Papst & Yolo streets); the restrooms are about 100 yards away (near the old school and depot). This really isn't inconvenient, unless you have young children who need to go "right now!", and then that 2-minute walk could be a little too long.

I love this park and love how this community actually uses it. On normal days, there are always…read morekids playing on the slides and swings and others having a picnic under the gazebos. There is a large BBQ for parties and smaller ones throughout the park. There are softball fields and lots of parking here. On event days half the town is over here for the carnival, or Lamb Derby, or AutoShow. Its so cool and so fun. During events the electrical is on so vendors can hook up and cook. We bring the dogs here sometimes but generally its a nice park to lounge at or to attend local events in town.

We've been here since 2017, and we've been to literally every single playground from Butte County to Glenn County, to Shasta County, and even the Mount Shasta area. This is cute, but it's not a great playground. It still has these useless cement structures that have zero purpose, besides getting in the way. I remember the same type of useless structures that children we're supposed to climb on and then just sit there doing nothing when I was a child in the 1960s. These are from that exact same era. They are faded and deteriorating and just make whoever takes care of the park look like they don't give a crap. From afar, the plastic structures look new, but when you get close, you see they've been faded by the sun significantly and are probably decades old. None of the slides are good. Everything is made for someone about 3 ft tall but definitely not older than whatever age would be more than that. An abundance of swings to a weird level. I've never seen a playground with this many swings, outside the main playground at Golden Gate Park..There's just no great structure to spend time in. The structures end with really pathetic bizarrely tiny slides. It's a huge park that never ever has anyone taking even more than 2% of it up at any given time. They should use that space for an amazing park for this area since literally nowhere out this way from Glenn County to Shasta County to Butte County has a decent large playground. I went back yesterday, and it was so worth it. I love being out hiking, basically alone with the dogs to run off leash. Sad to see such a beautiful campsite closed, but apparently budget cuts did it in. Thanks, Newscum. So many beautiful trees and huge campsites. Across the street is another area with a bunch of trails along the river. Good to see not too much trash that the illegals always bring in, but I'm not in Ventura County anymore, and they trash that county.

I've passed this National Wildlife sign off the I-5 so many times and when I finally got to visit,…read morethe sheer size and uniqueness of this refuge far exceeded my expectations. Driving along the I-5 before, I've always wondered how deep the farms went. Well this refuge must've been hundreds of acres. I had no idea there was both a walking path and a driving tour. We opted for the self-driving tour. Starting out, it was kind of dry in May and I thought it was going to be those lame small areas to explore that takes like 20-30 mins. I didn't see anything but dry fields for a good while, but the deeper in we went, all of a sudden random ecosystems popped up left and right, lush greenery, and wildlife starting showing up. The gravel road took us on turns and it kept going on and on forever! The refuge was so huge it took me over an hour to get thru the whole thing. The driving tour takes you deeeeep into the refuge. It was nice you could stop at the pull-off areas to stretch your legs. There was even a viewing deck with built-in binoculars overlooking the creek and plains. We saw so many variety of birds, some rabbits and even spotted a deer. The whole experience was so amazing that I made a mental note to come back next spring and also take visiting family or friends.

There were so many different types of birds (we saw thousands) and I even spotted a bald eagle. I appreciated that dogs are allowed and the park is open until an hour past sunset. We went in March when the weather was unusually warm this year and the water was f l o w i n g. There isnt much tree cover as there used to be after the fires in this area, so if you're coming on a sunny day, be well prepared with sun protection and water. The majority of the hike is uncovered if you start after the morning hours. Parking lot is decent sized, on the day we came there were hardly any cars at 9am, but we saw more people when we finished around 1pm. There's also vault toilets at the trailhead

You need to keep going down the freeway passed Coal Canyon Road We parked in a large rocky parking lot. At this point, you need to use the bathrooms because there aren't any along your path or trail. I found it hard to stay hydrated because since there aren't bathrooms along the way. I didn't want to drink too much water in case it makes me have to go. We started our hike at 1:15pm. The first part of the hike is a very rocky dirt path. No shade. So wear your sun screen! It was beautiful along the way with beautiful green grass, gorgeous flowers. There were free range cows roaming around. This hike can be very challenging to someone who doesn't work out or get their heart rate up daily. There were a couple large Oaks trees offering us some shade just before you approach the quarry. It's a good resting point but we kept on. For this part, we were climbing down into a quarry, surrounded by trees and bushes, over the rocks, down the path, going back and forth... to come to the first waterfall. It was refreshing and rewarding! Being able to feel the water coming down over you after hiking down from the sun was exhilarating! Now, you have to climb your way up the other side. This is where a big challenge comes in. Up the other side, walking up a very vertical hill, over the rocks... really takes your breath away and makes your legs burn.. we loved every minute of it. When you get to the top, there are no trees up here, just more hills to walk up with rocks below your feet. So wear some good shoes! Getting to the top of that part was another waterfall. It was only visible from far away, but even more gorgeous! The sun was hitting it just right to make a rainbow in the mist. It took us 2 1/2-3 hours to get to that particular part of the hike (we spent quite a bit of time at the previous waterfall). At this point we decided to go back... but you need to go back the way you came. We were pretty out of shape for this hike but we love challenges. So up and back over the hills, back down the steep quarry full of trees, down the rocky path, back to the first waterfall (and we spent time down there again, lol) and then climbing out of that quarry, we decided to stop at those big oak trees to make a sandwich to share. After our long rest, getting some fuel in our bodies, and getting nice and hydrated, we started out way down the rocky path. Again, the rocky path made it very challenging. Our legs were really worked from all the climbing up the hills we did so we've smaller hill after that made us feel the burn! Oh... there nothing like the motivation of seeing that parking lot, lol. It was indeed time to get into the air conditioned car and into a comfy seat in the car. Oooh and finally!!! Bathrooms!!! Lol My daughter & I had a blast on our hike for Easter. There were so many families that day who had the same idea. The weather was perfectly sunny with a slight breeze. It was 6 p.m. by the time we sat in the car and turned on the air conditioning. Great timing since I didn't have to drive in the dark on our way home!

We rented a handicap accessible picnic area for a family get together after a memorial for the matriarch of the family. There are geese and squirrels running about on the grounds. Nicely shaded trees. There is a public pool, but it happened to be closed on the day of our event. Great place to chill, have a picnic with friends and family. And nowadays, there is little reminder of that tragic event in 2018.
