We didn't have any "hanging chads" here in 2000. Tuesday we had another successful election even with a strong thunderstorm that knocked out power for a little bit and blew over the tent covering the curbside drop off for absentee/mail-in ballots. Heck, one precinct even had to briefly deal with a naked man in front of the precinct. I know y'all all saw that "Florida man" story. 67% of us voting by mail and early voting probably helped Tuesday be mostly uneventful. Supervisor of Elections is normally a job for as long as you want it as long as you don't mess up. Wilma Sullivan was Supervisor for forever when I was younger. Her son worked for years with her and probably would have been the next Supervisor because of his experience but evidently they didn't trust the electorate to pick the most experienced candidate so on the last day of qualifying Wilma announced her retirement and her son became the only candidate to qualify before the deadline. That caused quite an uproar so a write in candidate won the job. He didn't avoid messing up so Ion Sancho got the job and kept things smooth for many years right past the 2000 Florida election debacle. He did such a good job that he became something of an election expert on the national level. Mark Earley, the most experienced employee in Ion's office, won the election after Ion's retirement and has kept things running smooth since. I suspect he will be in the job as long as he wants it.

I saw forms available at the office to fill out if you don't have printer. Forms are for new voter registration, change of party, or address change.

At the time there were two death penalty cases that were being reviewed and honestly wish that I would have gotten the opportunity to participate. However, I was on a tour... I did get to see the chief justice seats and admire all the historic art work. I am happy the kids were able to see this and understand the importance of the supreme court. The tour guides were excellent and even gave a PowerPoint presentation for the kids along with questions the kids could respond to. All in all, great experience and recommend when visiting our state capital!

Beautiful building in the heart of downtown Tallahassee across Duval Street from the State Capitol…read morebuilding. Main floor, including Court library and courtroom, is open to the public. Oral arguments, which are held once per month, are also open to the public. Great place to visit and learn about history of State of Florida. The public entrance is on Duval Street, and the best place to park is in the Kleman garage downtown, which you can enter on Duval or Bronough Street.

Kind of weird to write a review of a courthouse, but why not?…read more This is a large and impressive building in Tallahassee. Inside it is modern and sleek. It's a very nice courthouse, and more impressive, even, than the new First District Court of Appeals down in Southwood. If you have business inside, be aware that these are the feds - this is the big time! That means security is tight. The good thing, in my experience, is that security is security is provided by the US Marshal's Service and is professional, courteous, and efficient. This is much more pleasant than the abuse/disrespect citizens must endure at the hands of the private security that control the front desks of all the agency buildings in town, and also generally better than going to the local trial court. My advice to you is don't take ANYTHING in that you don't need. They are very strict, especially about cell phones. Seriously. Just leave it in the car. Other than that, enjoy your trip to federal court ... depending on the circumstances.

This is a nice memorial dedicated to the WWII veterans. It is located in a plaza area in front of…read morethe Leon County Courthouse. It was dedicated in 2001 and has a life like bronze statue of an elderly veteran man with a cane and small American flag in his hand. The sculpture is the work of local artist, W Stanley "Sandy" Proctor. The man in the sculpture appears to be in his military uniform and is sitting on a bench. The bench has the inscription "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his country". The backdrop of the memorial is three flag poles waving the Leon County flag, the American Flag, and the Florida State flag, respectively. There are a few benches around the Memorial's plaza to sit, relax, and reflect and if you look closely, you will see the names of WWII veterans on brick pavers that encircles the the memorial. If you plan on driving to see the memorial, there is metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance. Anyway, as with most memorials that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 10 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. The State Capital is across the street and there of tons of memorials and parks to check out in the immediate area.

Maybe they are doing a good job here. It certainly has been our experience. When Leon County bought the shopping center then we got a branch library, a community center and this tax collector branch office. No longer a need to go downtown to the courthouse. Just be sure to make an appointment for whatever you need to do. Whatever you need to do includes paying property taxes, vehicle/trailer/boat/mobile home tag, title and/or registration, driver license/ID card, hunting &/or fishing license, disabled parking permit, concealed weapon permit and birth certificates. Whew. Did I mention you need an appointment for these? However, if you are just dropping off your payment and don't need to talk to anybody then there is a secure drop box outside the front door. See, there is one thing you can do without an appointment. For everything else, enjoy not having to sit around in a crowded office waiting for your number to be called. That's how it used to be done.
