Leo's Fish Bar don't seem to know what they are doing at all. Their name states it is a Fish bar but they also sell chicken, they do takeaway with Just Eat, they sell donner beat, and even do eat in food. I don't like this approach as it makes it feel messy, and not a great place to eat in, and it makes me feel they are sacrificing quality and the nature of it being a fish and chip shop, by selling lots of other different things, making it more of a takeaway where you can sit and eat. The fish seems to be done fresh to order, as they don't do gluten free, I just came in with my friend who ordered his meal. He said he didn't enjoy it and it was very poor. Leo's Fish Bar rightly so are trying to try their best to survive in Manchester city center, even taking clubcard vouchers, but it isn't a very nice place to eat in, the staff don't seem too helpful and by selling so many foods, it ruins the nature of it being a homemade fish and chip shop, and when they is so many places to eat in Manchester, I really don't understand why someone would go to a takeaway, which doesn't even seem to know what it is doing. They didn't seem to have a gluten free menu either, and although it was reasonable, it could have been cleaner with nicer decor, especially in the seating and cooking areas. read more

I've been in here once, and don't intend to return anytime soon. Leo's fish bar is the kind of place you end up when you've had a long afternoon or evening drinking and you and your stomach haven't got the patience to look any further. Wah, wah, wahhhhh. For those of you unschooled in the ways of the internet meme, that was the sad trombone noise, which is precisely the noise I made when I got some nosh from Leo's Fish Bar. Because it was rubbish, and I was therefore given cause to feel sad...get it? Good. My love for all things fried'n'battered is a well-chronicled love, almost as well-chronicled as the ire I reserve for places that can't get simple things right. How on earth is is possible to screw up a simple chippy dinner? Well, answers on a postcard, please. If you don't know the answer, it falls under the following (by now too too familiar) bulletpoints: - soggy batter - soggy chips - baaaad sausage - skanky fish (the boyf's judgement, I won't go near anything from the sea) - rubbish gravy/curry sauce/mushy peas It is shocking how many chippies follow the above edict, meaning that, in all my years sampling Manchester's chippies, I have found only two worth visiting. This isn't right! It's a damn shame that Leo's is so rubbish, but obviously his committment to cheapo ingredients, bad cooking and shoddy, rude service does nothing to harm his thriving business; the place is always, somehow, packed. Yeah, I like Leo's Fish Bar in Manchester's increasingly cool Northern Quarter. Everyone was friendly here and I noted there were a couple of delivery services coming to pick up food. But I wanted to eat in and I ordered a Hake and Chips. The hake fish was of good quality and perfectly fried to a light golden crisp. (See my photo.) To the Hake I added malt vinegar and to my chips the popular northern English gravy which I found very tasty. And all this for about 7 pounds! Quite okay I went in, had some problems to order a meal perhaps my German school English has not the right accent. The food delivered to the table was fresh and tasteful, I ordered Chicken Shamarwan (not sure if I spell it right or got it right at all). Some Narn and Salad was part of the menu. For nearly 5 pounds it was a cheap and delicious meal. Salad had no dressing, I was asked if I would like to have a sauce, but didn't want any, so it was my fault. Narn bread was good. I probably shouldn't admit it, but we do enjoy a takeaway - pizza, curry and thai are often involved in our indulgent weekends - but it's rarely fish and chips. After attending the opening night of Pete McKee's travelling exhibition at Kosmonaut, we headed to Leo's after the boyfriend suggested we try and find the best chippy tea in the city. Service was friendly and efficient, and we walked home with our paper wrapped polystyrene with anticipation. I actually went for the fried chicken, which was potentially a mistake, but actually surprised me with the quality of taste (not the mention the lovely crispy and seasoned skin). The chips were good and what I would call proper chippy-chips; a tiny bit soggy but with crispy bits hidden away at the bottom of the tray. Mushy peas, which I am learning to love, came in a good dollop and had a nice splash of vinegar. Maybe not the best, but a good start to what I can see developing into a food adventure. read more

This place gives an impression that everyone in the kitchen has practically done a course in the traditional fish and chips subject! They're particular about what you want, where you'll sit and what you'll do. Yes, I was met with a rather very intruding staff here. Nonetheless I was still happily awaiting my fishy delight. Once it had arrived, I felt it would have been 10 times better had I been a little drunk! The food was the same chippy food which you relish after a night out- Oily, greasy and well, the normal body does not quite vouch for it. Got delivery... £15 for 2 portions of cod chips and mushy peas... The only good points are for delivery being prompt and food being hot alone... Without those it would be 1 star. The food looks appetising enough but was just UBER greasy and had virtually no flavour. Aside from grease, the fish was dry and over cooked, the chips where mostly stale and again very greasy and the peas tasted like lumpy water (without flavour). Very let down and also the sheer volume of grease on the fish (I know I've said it a lot but I just want to hammer it home how bad it was) made me feel pretty damn queazy after a bit! Leo's Fish bar is on Oldham Street in Manchester City Centre. They do a lot of different fast foods and you can sit down and eat your meal inside, or you can take away. Staff are very friendly and the food was cooked fresh. It is reasonably priced for what you get. read more

Not eaten in here for years but it's since had a refurb and now resembles more of a fancy cafe than a takeaway, with lots of seating and nice clean tables and cutlery. Normally, I would only head to a takeaway on Oldham street if I was blind drunk, but seeing as there's a distinct lack of good fish and chip shops in the city centre - and being drawn in by the (fairly) new branding and snazzy-looking Christmas tree - I decided to give this place another go. Soooo glad I did! Lovely chap serving the food. Great first impressions. I ordered a chip barm (I'm a proper northern lass), to eat in their 'fish bar' and for £1.80 the portion of chips was enough to feed two of us. Huge! Cheap as er....chips. The chips themselves are delicious and fresh, with just the right amount of oil and tenderness (with crispy bits at the bottom). I've been told their Chicken Shawarma is amazing , so will check that out too. Honestly, I've not enjoyed chippy chips in such a long time and it beat previous 5* chippy tastings in Whitby and Bournemouth. Before, I always thought the Portland Plaice was great but Leo's blows them out of the water. read more

I have eaten the fish and chips and full breakfast here many times. I also have coffes here too. For the money its great and I always feel satisfied afterwards. The staff are nice too. Shame about the hideous blue chairs nailed to the ground that make dining uncomfortable! I would deffinatley recommend this place. read more

We headed to Leo's Fish Bar as I was craving for chippy. Couldn't decide what fish to have so I ordered the Captain' Meal (Cod, Haddock and Hake) with chips (£6.60) and mushy peas (80p). Disappointed with the peas as it was very bland and even with salt added it looked very sorry for itself. However the main star Captain's meal was brilliant! The batter was very light and cooked perfectly goldenly crispy whilst the fish was still moist inside. Definitely satisfied my craving. read more

It was getting late and we were getting hungry. I got off the main road just to peek up this street to see if there were any places to eat and I spotted Leo's. I hadn't had fish and chips yet and since I was in England, I HAD to have fish and chips. Leo's was OK. The two of us had cod and chips, which cost 4.10, which I think is a reasonable price. Could have done with a few more chips though. I think the place may be Turkish owned/run because there were several Turkish dishes on the menu, so you're not really restricted to traditional English fare. read more

I visited on Saturday 2 November 2013 - wished I had located this restaurant a day or 2 earlier. One of the best Chicken Sharwarma have had - served by the only lady on shift and due to her customer service, we returned on 3 November 2013. Absolutely delicious. I will recommend this Cafe and they also open long hours. Hadn't eaten there in years but went back for the first time at the weekend. It was lovely! I had friends visiting from Germany who wanted a proper, greasy fish and chips so we decided to give Leo's another try. It was definitely worth it! The restaurant area is quite nice, and the food, without being mind blowing, is excellent value and there will be something for anyone: all day breakfast, burgers, fish and chips etc. One slight disappointment was the tartare sauce: it came in single industrial pre packed portions which was a shame. read more

If you're out in town past midnight and fancy (or need) something greasy head to Leo's Fish Bar. Serving everything from battered cod to a full english, Leo's will be able to satisfy most late night wants and needs at a reasonable price, just don't expect more than you pay for. I've had the cod and chips here a few times and it was fine, I don't really expect much from fish when I'm away from the coast and Leo's ticked all of the boxes: crispy batter, lightly steamed fish, chunky chips and plenty of vinegar. I would avoid the pizzas as they look a little stodgy, and the burgers look pretty plastic, but for something to soak up the sauce I'm sure these would suffice. The staff are friendly, the service is fast, there are plenty of places to sit and you can pour your own ketchup. Whether its a late night burger or an early morning hang-over cure, Leo's Fish Bar will serve up exactly what you need. read more

God, I wish I'd looked at yelp before I ventured in here! Had a hankering for some chips and this place looked up to it but failed..Chips were undercooked inside, yet pretty overcooked on the outside as well as being way too greasy. this former favourite of mine deserves one star due to the appalling treatment i received a few months ago. having enjoyed its wholesome fare for the past two years, i had the unfortunate experience of waiting ages a few months ago. not only tht and i understand it was a busy day, but i loathe aggressive service and being tactlessly bawled at over a mix up over a side or whatever. i will simply avoid in future and take my custom elsewhere. read more

Good atmosphere however service was not great as their profeciency level of english was below average.The batter on the fish was not very well done and the fish lacked parts that were actually battered. Hubby and I were hankering for a burger but didn't want to pay £10 each for one. We saw that Leo's sold them for £2.80, so we ordered a burger and chips. I only had two bites and completely lost my appetite. The meat was so dry it looked like sawdust inside old shoe leather, and it tasted foul. I swear they made the patties out of kebab meat. I can't even tell you what the chips tasted like because I was done after that and I left the full plate. AWFUL FOOD, STAFF & CLIENTELE. WOULD NEVER VISIT AGAIN. I visited this fish & chip shop with my friend on 17th July. First they got the order wrong, only gave us one fish when I asked for two. The chips were awful, dried up scraps from the bottom of the chip pan. One portion was half the size of the other despite them both costing £1.80. When I complained to the manager she didn't want to do anything, but finally offered to only charge 90p for one of the portions. Then a rude customer butted in, saying I was full of ****.
