Cold food and even colder service, complete with a scowl. Upon ordering a 'sunnyside up' egg, the front desk responded with "the options are fried scrambled or poached"- proceeding to give me a cold, solid and dry fried egg, which was returned, much to the ridicule of the kitchen staff, who then told me "sunny side to us means flipped".... I don't think so. Has potential, but needs a service over-haul with an education on the basics. But decent coffee. read more

Confession: I love good delis. I absolutely can't get enough of them. Local produce, unique preserves, unusual store-cupboard stand-bys to peruse, but more than that, the best delis are the ones where you can both browse and munch. And North Star really lives up to its name by being a great spot not only to mooch around the shelves but to have a hunk of cake, a great cup of coffee and hone in on some of the most reliable wifi I've had the joy of experiencing. I popped in here with my mum before a quick trip to Khawaja Brothers and Morrison's, and boy were we glad we did. Slabs of amazing homemade cake, incredible salads of puy lentils, Mediterranean veg, sundried tomatoes, big wedges of vegetarian lasagne, giant salmon fishcakes... the choices here are endless. And all served with a warm smile and with the option of kick-ass coffee and Teapigs tea. Yes, they had me at Teapigs tea. And amazing greetings cards, randomly. The decor is really relaxing, the outside space plentiful, and despite being on one of the busies roads in South Manchester and near a petrol station it manages to maintain an ambience of calm. We indulged in the banana and coconut cake and Victoria sponge, and both were mindblowing. The coconut icing on the banana cake should be sold by the spoonful and the Victoria sandwich had fresh strawberries in the buttercream topping and utterly delicious jam in the middle. Oh and the cake dough didn't even harbour a hint of dryness. The prices are reasonable too, and that wifi I mentioned didn't falter once - even while I was outside on the patio. This is one star worthy of handprints in cement. It can even wear sunglasses indoors if it wishes. Basically in my book, it's so cool that it can do no wrong. read more

Normally my favourite breakfast/brunch venue in chorlton as I love their homemade baked beans and general quality of their food. Wide range of food, light snacks, sharing boards, larger meals all freshly made. Also great cakes and coffee. Today I was disappointed. Not only was my breakfast not served with the homemade beans as I expect, the fried egg was swimming in grease and the bacon had clearly been precooked and then heated up for my breakfast. It was so tough. Very disappointed and after today will reconsider my usual chorlton breakfast default. read more

Lovely little deli that's well established as part of the Chorlton circuit. It's a very fine spot to sit and snack 'al fresco' on a sunny day. I had a fish platter for £8.45 that was tasty and very filling. It involved smoked mackerel, smoked salmon, anchovies (the decision maker), crayfish, salad and bread. So when I said filling I really meant it. Sadly I couldn't fit in a cake but I know from previous scoffing experience that they are good. There's a full menu of hot and cold meals/snacks plus good quality coffees and teas. There's also deli food to buy of course. On the day I visited my housemate and I were riveted by an argument at the next table but there isn't usually free entertainment sadly. It's normally full of relaxed Chorltonites with a Guardian +/- kids (to freely stereotype the locals) ;) I'm putting myself in the mood to go back again this weekend actually. read more

I've never seen a more space-age looking delicatessen in all my years of being a food lover. There's something so refreshing about the simple lines of this shop with its white tulip tables and red banquette seating where Barbarella herself wouldn't look out of place. The brain child of brother and sister act Adam Berlyne and Deanna Thomas, this Chorlton institution offers a wonderful selection of breakfasts, sandwiches and lite bites as well as delicious coffees. Situated in the centre of the room is the open kitchen, where diners and shoppers alike can watch the daily dishes being created first hand. My favourite offering is the Middle Eastern Platter: hummus, falafel, stuffed vine leaves, olives and pitta bread for just £6.95. The best part about North Star for me though is the shop itself, its sweeping futuristic shelves offering up an international selection of jams, conserves, chutneys, sauces, chocolate and pulses and more. At the deli counter there's a very comprehensive choice of cold cuts and world cheeses too, and what's more, nothing is extortionate. It makes my stomach churn just thinking of this place! read more

The second best deli-cum-shop-cum-café in Chorlton-cum-Hardy! In my opinion anyway, and to come in second place behind Barbakan is certainly not a bad thing. The futuristic façade of this deli/shop is matched by the space-age stools and minimalist decor. The clutter-free environment certainly makes it a good place to relax, and maybe this is why it appeals to so many of Chorlton's yummy Mummys - at least on weekday mornings. The open-plan layout of the café area enables you to monitor the progress of your meal which is always reassuring. The coffee is delicious and the staff are helpful. Another plus point is the fact that the deli is licensed with a wide selection of beer and wines. This could be another reason why it appeals to the Mums! £4.50 for a grilled mozzarella, tomato and pesto sandwich is a little more than I'd normally like to pay, so for me it's a rare treat to visit this little gem, but with a very vegetarian friendly menu that makes me want to eat everything with a (v) beside it I will certainly be back at North Star. read more

North Star is a lovely little deli café type place in a delightfully handy place for lunch in Chorlton - right next to the Metrolink. There are all sorts of lovely things to look at and buy, and fancy salads and other dishes to eat in or takeaway. Despite all the excitement on offer, I've opted for sandwiches both times I've been here. Brie & caramelised onion was almost too decadent for lunch. Almost. Chicken, bacon & guacamole was a pretty perfect balance of flavours. The coffee is good. The staff are nice. It's not the cheapest of places, but it's not going to break the bank. I won't hesitate to eat here again next time I go for a charity shop-infused wander in Chorlton. read more

Even though I've lived near this place for ages, I had not ever gone there until this morning. It's always packed full of people, and always has interesting little desserts in the window, but up until now I had never ventured into the unknown, and now that I have I will probably not be going back. It wasn't the food that had me reeling back in terror, it was the staff. The food itself is alright albeit remarkably overpriced. For two regular sized sandwiches and two regular coffees, I wound up paying almost £13. The takeaway menu is sadly bound to sandwiches only, as I was rudely informed once I asked for a stack of pancakes and another breakfast item to go (even though on the menu it explicitly says "Breakfast, served all day, to eat in or take away). I amended my order to two sandwiches - a mushroom melt and a bacon and egg sandwich w/ a reg coffee each. Not only did I have to stand around waiting for someone to take my order, even though there were no other people in line or hardly even in the deli at all, but when I did manage to get the attention of one of the employees, I was regarded with a look that I could only call spite. I had to repeat my requests a few times to two different people, and I got the feeling that I was wasting their valuable time. I understand that not everyone wants to work a Saturday morning, but I was certainly not the first customer they had seen that morning (there were about 4-6 other people in the deli at the time) and I was expecting at least a smile, which I hadn't seen from any of them. When I finally got my food and took it home (I live literally a 2 minute walk away) and got it unwrapped, it was cold. The bread wasn't even toasted, and the mushroom melt wasn't MELTED at all. I had to stick it in the microwave just to breathe some life back into it. While the bacon and egg sandwich was edible (again, not toasted), it wasn't anything special, and certainly not worth what I paid for it. The coffee was mediocre at best, and when it was given to me, there was coffee on the top that the employee had failed to wipe off. While the decor of the deli is beautiful and very clean-cut, I feel like this particular deli could benefit from some new staff, or at least an attitude adjustment and a lesson in customer service. read more

The deli counter has a wide choice of cooked and cured meats and a broad selection of cheeses. Their own coffee is sold and served in the café along with a large array of sandwiches and hot snacks. A lovely place to go for a light snack, and pick up one or two delightful little items while you're there. The only drawback is the price... it's a too familiar problem with good independent food places.. Expect to pay a little bit extra for something that's a bit extra nice read more

Love this place! Visited this place twice once with a group of 4 of us and another with a friend, both for breakfast. As a creature of habit I have had the eggs benedict twice, the second time with bacon (which they don't mind adding on for no extra cost!). Both times have been fab, you have to go up and order your food at the bar, however drinks and food arrive quickly and are prepared fresh that morning. Even though it gets really busy for weekend brunch, they are always really smiley and welcoming and keep churning out top notch food! read more

The food is really good, and there is a huge range on offer (from platters to jackets to salads to sandwiches to omelettes to brunch) so there's definitely something for everyone. Orders are taken at the counter and the staff are lovely but tend to develop quite a queue so you can end up standing for a while, waiting to order. My only complaint would be the prominence of children, usually screaming. But this is Chorlton, whatchagonado?! read more

North Star deli is "yummy mummy" central, and you often have to push past the massive buggies of the various ladies that choose to lunch there whenever you pay it a visit. However, whilst small, it does have an excellent selection of wine, spirits, and various other typically deli goods. It also serves a rather tasty (if overpriced) selection of cakes and sandwiches to nibble whilst you're sipping your latte and watching the numerous double deckers trundle past. Whilst its choice is nowhere near as extensive as its neighbour The Barbakan, if you've got a couple of quid to burn on expensive ingredients, this is still a nice little place to pop into to pick up some squid ink pasta and a sticky bun if you happen to be passing by. read more

There was a lovely variety of food on the menu and there are quite a few tables you can choose to sit at. It's got a homely feel and we were made to feel very welcome. I've spent an entire year of Sunday mornings drinking coffee and reading here. This place does the best coffee in Chorlton. They care about the beans, the grind, and the process. Some of the food can be a little salty, but with such a range and food made daily it's not a major gripe. You can't lose on cakes which are made by a lovely girl called Lucy who has a real talent and passion for it. I'd recommend coffee and cake here to anyone. Breakfast foods are killer, I usually get eggs benedict, bacon, pancakes and maple syrup, or toast. The fry up doesn't cut it in Chorlton where the competition is high, but that's the only let down. Go here on a week day and it's a lovely place to be! They have grocery goods, interesting cooled drinks, and the design work which wraps the place up is tastful and subtle. read more

Huge selection of delicious looking food on show, I tried the roasted veggie & feta puff pastries and some sundries tomato lentils, it was all super nice. The cakes & deserts were really nice too. Firstly, the North Star isn't a delicatessen, it is a cafe which sells overpriced condiments on the side. It is one of those places that irritate me about Chorlton - all style over substance. The food is fine but certainly doesn't warrant the extortionate prices for such tiny portions that I could make it better at home. The coffee is good though. The Chorlton branch is frequented by far too many 4x4 pushchair wielding yummy mummies making it at times inaccessible and the service is patchy and at times weird. The guy who seems to be the manager is useless and the staff seem overworked. Not a fan at all. read more
