There are two portions of this market, the permanent structure with a few shops and sit down places to eat inside and the outdoor tents where you can also shop and eat, with limited seating. The good: - There was a lot of variety. There are plenty of stands selling goods and food to eat. - The vendors and people working the tents were mostly very nice and most of them let you sample certain items. - The reindeer hot dog we ate was fan-flipping-tastic and I'd eat one once a week if I could. The bad: - The seafood was less local and more what's popular. I didn't come to Norway to have Norman (French) oysters or branzino from the Mediterranean. - The pricing was all over the place, but mostly extremely expensive. We were wanting to try a reindeer hotdog and we saw one at three different stands. Each stand had a different price for the same item. We went to the cheapest stand, it's a hot dog, but didn't get the items advertised. It was just strange and off putting. - Not enough seating. Overall, a nice place to walk through but kind of underwhelming.

When I first entered the restaurant I immediatly got a calm feeling of the atmosphere. The light was dimmed down and there were lighted candles at the tables. The staff was really nice and helpfull - and answered all my questions about the menu with a smile (which often tend to be a lot of questions). The menu was okey, but I think this is a good place to dine if you're a meat lover. We decided to try out the plank steak, and I'm so glad I did because that is the best plank steak I've ever tasted. The meat was perfectly fried, and the berneasauce contained a hint of creme fraise which made it SO much better. We also got butterfried veggies and mashed potatoes - an amazing combo! The two servers waiting for the diners inside the vinyl-covered sunroom of Fish Me were on top of their game. Obliging our requests for photos and even allowing us to move tables, when we saw the harbour view seats were available. Smiles and yeses, came out of their mouths, which was surprisingly uncommon in Europe. For the food, though this was inside was a fish market and them aptly named Fish Me, we didn't order fish. We opted for the only two items in the "Meat Dishes" section of the menu. I had the Whale Steak (minke) which is technically a mammal, while my wife got Reindeer Entrecôte. We paired this with a Pinot Noir and Spicy Hot Chocolate. Both tasted like beef with the gamey flavor offsetted by the red wine sauce and the caramelized green beans. My presumption proven wrong, we left satiated and considered this a winning choice.

Work brings me to Bergen from time to time and I've had the good fortune to dine at Colonialen twice. Once with two good friends and another time simply by myself. A restaurant has to be amazing to get me to sit alone for 3.5 hours to go through all the courses. The food here is imaginative and consistent. The wine pairings are spot-on. Listing the 20 or so dishes I've eaten there would take forever, so I'll stick with two or three of the standouts. The first was a group of northern grains served in a mortar with a pestle. You ground up the grains with the pestle and an oxtail consomme was poured over top. This was painfully delicious. It was so good that I shamelessly begged (and received) a second. On my second visit, the staff recognized me and gave me a lot of attention (which was nice since I was alone). I had long conversations with the chef and the sommalier about how they sourced their food and selected their wines. Their wine pairings are eclectic (france, germany, italy, pacific northwest, even a Norwegian selection worked its way in). If you are in Bergen or traveling to Bergen, this needs to be on your list ... perhaps more than anything else in town.
