The fries themselves were well-seasoned and thick while the meat was very tender. They would have been quite good on their own too. My only complaint was that they garnished it with deep-fried onions that were cold. I think even if they had been hot they wouldn't have added much to the poutine as a whole.

While the ones used with the chorizo held up fine. So $5.50 for what tasted like a pickle taco just didn't work for me. Plus the chips that came with the "combo" were just this side of stale. After our third and final workshop day, I was once again hungry and needed to get some dinner. I walked down a block on Rue de Bleury, looked to my right, and it was the start of the festival. Sweet! My dinner plans changed. I decided to get something close and then wander over to the festival. Rue Saint-Catherine Ouest was blocked off for the festival. Frankly, more of it was blocked off due to construction. It was a treat to just walk it without any traffic. I had never done that before. I got to take photos of the Just For Laughs mascot, watch and listen to a live comedy podcast in French, and check out various vendors and acts along the way. I looked at the bill and Trevor Noah was in town the following weekend. I wish that my workshop had been delayed by a week! On the main stage, by Place des Arts, was Pierre-Olivier Cyr, a hypnotist. He was great getting the crowd to actively participate. He eventually had a bunch of participants go on stage and get hypnotized. He then made them act in movie parts. He first had them as prehistoric animals in Jurassic Park. He then got them to dance like the cast did in Grease. It was hilarious and amazing! I had the best time. Although there were a ton of food and drink trucks, I didn't get anything. I was still full from dinner, but did hit the Starbucks close by for a drink before I called it an evening. There were street performers everywhere. I took in these dancing slinkies. One guy next to me attempted to take the coil off one of them, but failed. Instead, the coil decided to snuggle up to him. It freaked the woman in front of me that she ended up snuggling up to me for a brief moment until I stared at her funny. I had so much fun. It was such an unexpected event that I had felt like I had crashed. I'm so glad that I hit this festival. I loved it and hope to return soon to take it in again. (324)

We started walking through near the beginning of the day and some of the vendors were still getting set up; the streets weren't very crowded yet. But by the time we were close to the western end (close to, because this was giant and we didn't get through it all!) and turned around, the large mass of people was impressive! The wide variety of art, shops, and food is hard to do justice with words, it's something you truly have to see for yourself. I didn't see much that tripped the lights fantastic for me, but I was more than happy to window shop for the most part. Part of our intention for visiting the festival was the drag brunch, which was not quite accurate. Drag, yes. Brunch, nowhere to be found. But the show was quite good, even if my French was not good enough to keep up with the mistress of ceremonies! Again, very impressed with this festival, Montreal should be proud of this gem!

Regardless, when I realized my trip coincided with the festival I researched artists, venues, and dates only to come to the realization that a whole lot of Montreal's jazz festival takes place for free at multiple venues in a fairly concentrated area of the city. Assuming you can find the schedule (at staffed kiosks in the area) and locations and understand the program (no joke, it was a challenge), you can learn when and where everyone is playing and identify the free performances. Multiple nights on end I found myself at large outdoor spaces filled with folks there to enjoy the free offerings. Was it jazz? Let's just say that jazz is in the ear of the beholder because not once did I experience music that I consider to be jazz though that seems somewhat beside the point. Free live music is almost always enjoyable and this is no exception. The outdoor spaces are clean, the sound is good, and the large crowd is considerate even as they come and go. Were I returning to Montreal during another summer I'd most certainly plan my visit to coincide with the jazz festival and again attend several events.

The tacos were so laden with liquid ingredients that there was no way to actually eat it unless you went at it with a fork and knife... okay, fine... spoon and knife. The point of a taco is that you lift it up, but these you just couldn't, the liquid had made holes and everything came out of them. Two hours later, I'm still thinking about all my regrets. But worse... I'm so damn hungry that I'm thinking about going out again for lunch, because it was so unsatisfying.
