I've had some fine meals in my day, and this one was up there in the pantheon--for lunch, no less!…read more It's not cheap, and for my fellow Americans, it's not a quick "let's turn the table and get more guests in" spot like we're used to seeing...and that's perfect. Food is exceptional. Yeah, I have some moral qualms about foie gras...but the creamy, velvety, goose butter scraped over some nicely charred bread is a dish one must try here. My son ordered a ham hock dish--amazed to have something people at home use to flavor greens made into a signature-level dish...falling off the bone, tender as can be, perfectly seasoned. I had the baeckoffe (like a casserole), which was also delectable, but I remain envious of that ham! Ambience is beautiful. The interior has an old world, classic feel. Outside is the usual European patio right next the the bustling sidewalk...the essence of relaxation. Service is fantastic. Helpful and knowledgeable. When I make it back to Colmar, I'll be making another visit.

Which was a good thing, since they had to turn away several guests that night. Our English Bulldog was welcome here as well, which was very nice of them. The menu in this Michelin restaurant is compact, but has something for every taste. It's modern french cuisine I'd say. We ordered a glass of local Riesling with our starters. There was a complementary Amuse-Bouche. A kind of cream-puff, but savoury with a creamy, cheesy filling. A really tasty appetizer. For starters we chose the Galantine duck and foie gras and trout carpaccio. Both fantastic choices. Wonderful duck and foie gras (mi-cuit), matched the Riesling perfectly. And the trout (pink/orange) was better quality-wise than most salmon in any other restaurants we know. High quality, fresh, highly enjoyable. For the mains we ordered the Veal shank confit and the Milk-fed lamb shoulder. Both excellent dishes. A bottle of red with that . I know duck confit, but veal confit (72 hours) was new to me. What a tender, juicy piece of meat. Actually: Piece of art! And the sauce...heaven! Confit is something you need to try. And this place here would be perfect for that. But also the lamb was wonderful. Equally tender, very smooth and with a rich sauce. You wouldn't even know it's lamb taste-wise, it was just perfect. There wasn't any room for desserts after this rich meal. A really fantastic dinner in a wonderful restaurant with a classic and cosy setting. It was pretty packed, so the staff was pretty busy. But they were quick and attentive, just didn't really have time for a quick chat or so. Price-wise it was fair. Around 150 Euros for two glasses of white, a bottle of red, two starters and two mains. For this quality? I would actually even say more than fair. A great place.

This place seems like more hype than quality, but I fell for the marketing and waited in a long…read moreline to get inside to see what was on offer. I went towards the end of the evening near closing time, so the cookies and pastries had already been picked over quite a bit. Luckily, I was here to get a gingerbread man, and I picked out the cutest one ever (see photos)! I've rarely met a gingerbread I didn't like, and this version was a-okay. It wasn't as spicy as I'd like, but it had a nice chewy crunch to the cookie that made the texture quite satisfying. Of course, as is my method, I nibbled off his arms and legs first. I'm not such a fan of the icing, and Gilg's version I found quite bland. It was sweet, but not tasty. My cookie was individually wrapped in plastic which made it easy to reseal to enjoy later. I was able to take a few more nibbles on my train to Paris the next afternoon. And did I mention how stinking cute the cookie was? The little wide eyes and "o" face...just adorable. I could see these making excellent gifts to take home from Europe, if you could keep the cookies from breaking during transit. The other goods on offer looked tasty, but if the gingerbread man is any indication, this may be one of those "all looks, bland taste" type of bakeries. I wish I had tried something else, but my main reason to visit was merely "just okay."
