With reservations a must, six of us finally got to try La Picara. There are a variety of tapas, ponchos and raciones on their menu. We tried a lot of them, and everything was delicious with the possible exception of Sepia a la Plancha, grilled squid which was too tough and chewy. Do NOT neglect to see their "Suggeriments fora de Carta" on a chalkboard. Most every off-the-chart suggestion we tried was exceptional, with my favorite actually being Tomaquets de Temporada amp Burratina í old D'Alfabrega. This was probably the best Burrata and Tomatoes serving I've ever tasted. It must be their spiced basil oil. The other standout special was a delicious Pintxo de Foie a la Plantxa, luxurious grilled foie gras skewer. A couple of drag queens came in promoting their show. They were a hoot at our table. My husband and I were able to sit in a tight spot along the wall in the bar area. I would recommend reserving ahead if you can though, as this is a spot not to be missed. Ambiance is lovely outside, no traffic noise and amidst the various cafes and gelato shops. Just going to highlight a few of the tapas we shared. The pulpo a la gallega (octopus) was very tender and had just the right amount of paprika (13,15€). At 6,40€, the bunyols de bacallá looked a bit odd due to the addition of squid ink in the batter. Like croquettes, they have the subtle taste of fish because of codfish eggs. My mother in law refused to eat them because she said they looked like "emu poos." I thought they looked like charcoal briquets (see photo). Higos or grilled figs had the addition of foie Gras which offset the sweetness of the figs 5,10€. Everything went down nicely with a bottle of Rueda Verdejo at 10,70€. A very memorable evening indeed!
