In the fall of 2013, I went to the show room on Lantier Dr. in Orleans to get ideas for a kitchen…read morerenovation, and met designer Vida Kiani. She was very helpful, explaining how the company used their own people rather than hire other contractors, as well as the various steps in getting a project underway and completed. When I made the decision to go ahead, Vida understood my needs, respected my budget, and never put any pressure on me on regarding decisions. She made several suggestions that I would not have thought of, and those really made a huge difference in turning a tiny, cramped condo space into something that feels much larger and spacious. My friends all say "Wow!" when they walk in the door. It is truly lovely. The reno started right on time, at which point Sheilagh Crombie, the company's project manager, took over coordination of the work. She called me each evening to ask if things were OK, if I was happy with the results, and to let me know the schedule for the next day. This was definitely NOT a reno nightmare. The installers were all super courteous and respectful of my place, cleaning up and being on time. Any glitches were minor, not my problem, and Sheilagh managed to smooth those over so the kitchen was finished as scheduled. All that was good, but best of all has been their follow-up. With any renovation, there will be things that need tweeking, and this company has delivered 100% satisfaction on those. The workmen told me that if anything is bothering me, do not let it fester, call the company and they will be sent out to deal with it. Very true, and reassuring. I will definitely go back to Distinctive Bathrooms and Kitchens for my next renovation, and have recommended them to my friends. Judy

There were surprises along the way (e.g., missing chunks of foundation as a result of previous retrofits) and things beyond the actual foundation (unpatched holes in the bottom exterior walls). Action Restoration went above and beyond to resolve my issues and it is amazing how warm the upstairs floor is now! I cannot say enough about how rare and pleasant it is working with a company that follows through on commitments, answers when you call, 30+ years of expertise, respectful of clients, and, most importantly, human beings that are there to help you, not to take advantage. I give Action Restoration a solid 5-star rating across the board: Communication: 5 stars; Professionalism: 5 stars; Quality of the work: 5 stars; Cleanliness: 5 stars; Overall Experience: 5 stars.

One word about our experience with Gestion G.L.: AWFUL. We had hired this company to construct a…read moresmall addition on our property back in 2020. It was our experience that Gilles, the owner, does not take responsibility for his errors (as other reviewers have mentioned) indicating a pattern of behavior, which is reason enough to avoid this company and certainly not an approach you want in a general contractor. Worst of all, my wife was also subjected to verbal abuse from the owner, Gilles, in October 2020. Scratches were found on the newly installed composite deck and it was pointed this out to him. Despite the fact that his workers were using the deck as their workbench, not protecting/covering the deck when working (they only began to after we mentioned this), using the deck as a workbench, and visible proof that metal shards from the work from the previous day were left laying around on the deck due to him/his team not cleaning the site, he had a tantrum and yelled out insult after insult like a 4 year-old child to my wife. My wife was understandably very shaken and stressed by that experience, and no apology was ever made in this regard. Gilles and Manon often repeated in communications with us that they are a trusted company, and that they have vast experience. Yet the owner, Gilles, made some critical errors that no experienced/trustworthy contractor should ever make: 1) he decided to move the location of a structural post that has been approved by an engineer in our building plans. Luckily we have inspectors in Ontario who quickly pointed out that a structural post was not installed according to our plans and asked Gilles to confirm that the post as installed was not above an opening in the basement. He proceeded to lie both to the inspector and to us about the post's location, indicating that its load was not over a door frame in the basement (the inspectors have not been entering properties to inspect themselves since COVID). Upon investigating myself, it was clear that the structural post was in fact located over a door frame in our basement (stuck a nail through the floor crack and sure enough, it came through directly over the door frame in the basement). When confronted, the relationship turned as Gilles couldn't admit fault, trying to convince us that there would be no structural problems despite the post's location. Easy for him to say, as he doesn't have to live with the consequences if issues come up after their one year warranty. He reluctantly relocated the post in accordance with our plans. Our confidence in Gilles was shaken. 2) he chose to install structural posts that were not certified by an engineer in Ontario, recommending these posts to us by indicating that his aluminum post product manufactured in Quebec was stronger and nicer than the aluminum cladded 6x6 wood posts that were in our plans. He never pointed out that this was not a cosmetic change and would need to be approved by the City. We did not know that this would be an issue and relied on his professional advice. This 2nd error was very costly in terms of wasted time & effort on both the contractor and us. Selecting certified products fit for installation in Ontario falls among the responsibilities of the contractor, according to the Ontario Building Code. The posts he chose to install didn't pass the final inspection, since they couldn't prove that they were engineered for use in Ontario. Endless back and forth communication ensued between us, Gestion G.L., the manufacturer of the posts, and the city inspectors, and took over one year to resolve (our addition just got completed in August 2021). A reputable company would have admitted fault and replaced the posts immediately and without question. In conversations exploring options to resolve what was clearly their error, they never indicated that they would charge us to replace the posts they had insisted on installing from the start, and then we suddenly received a separate bill for the work. Their rationale: the responsibility was on us to get our plans with the new products approved by the city (!) Gestion G.L. refused to proceed to correct their error without being offered more money. We caved and offered more money in the end to get this nightmare over with, paying for their error both in terms of time wasted and money. Additional costs crept in throughout, often without transparency and after the fact. For example, Gilles decided to create a negligible slope to the roof (it's a flat roof) during construction, convincing us that this was a best practice, and not according to our plans, only to hit us with a surprise charge for the work after the fact. I strongly recommend to look elsewhere for more competent, and experienced contractors, especially for more complex work like an addition, and find one that is capable of admitting fault and putting the client's interests first.
