While doing so, we stumbled upon Cafe Brunet where we felt a bit adventurous and split half of a pig's head and it was absolutely amazing. As someone who lives in the US, I am unable to eat pork in my country because it makes me very ill, so I thought I would take advantage of the opportunity in a country with much higher food standards. We also got a small cheese sampling which was absolutely phenomenal. As you would imagine, half of a pig's head is way more than two people can eat for lunch, so they packaged it up for us very carefully in a vacuum-sealed bag. I do want to point out that the menu is all in French and there weren't too many people on staff who spoke English (understandably, because they shouldn't have to). But even with the language barrier, the staff was so nice and accommodating.

My…read morebrother and I entered with the highest expectations and left disappointed and especially bothered by the service. We arrived right after dinner hours started at 7pm, we walked in unsure whether they were welcoming people in yet. I walked up to a waiter to ask and she took us to our table after making clear that we needed to be out by 9 since we did not have a reservation. The menus are displayed around the restaurant and divided into three sections for appetizer, main course and dessert/cheese. The waiter returned quickly asking us for our drink orders, which we weren't ready for because we had yet to look over the wine menu so we decided on the spot to try a local white ale. It was a great beer and with the waiter's advice we ordered a bottle of local white wine to follow the beer. I ordered cucumber soup to start, followed by féra (a local fish) à la plancha with ratatouille. The soup was quickly out within 5 minutes, something that always makes me suspicious. It was an unremarkable take on the soup with the addition of a bunch of herbs I had never heard of but they certainly helped. Our main course also came out within 5-10 minutes, which made me feel that they were doing their best to get us out of the way before the masses arrived around 9. The féra was cooked superbly and tasted delicious but the ratatouille came out cold and limp. At this point there were only a few other customers seated so I was surprised that something might come out cold. We were done with our food by 7:50 and this is much too quick even in the United States I would be astounded by a fine meal served that quickly. We decided to milk the hour we had left by ordering espressos so we could people watch. As it turns out, it seemed like they completely forgot about us and we sat there until 9:15 wondering whether they still knew we were even there. I finally grabbed our waiter's attention and she brought the check, telling us to go to the counter inside to pay. We observed many other people (mostly French) with bewildered expressions at slow and incompetent service (not bringing menus to tables that could not view them easily; bringing dishes to the wrong table; not pouring wine). As we paid, my brother asked about the service and told the man at the counter that we had waited an hour to get our check and he could only produce the limp reply that there were a lot of customers in the restaurant. A frustrating experience and I wouldn't recommend this place.

We had the tartiflette which is a dish of potatoes, reblochon cheese, lardons and onions. It's a big gooey heavy mess but man, it's good! It's served with a green salad to make you feel virtuous and to lighten things up. Have it with a glass of red wine and you're in heaven! So the niggly bits. The seating is so tightly packed in that the waitstaff need to talk over your table to get other guests orders and then pass food over your table to get them to the right people. The people next to you can't leave without asking you to get up to let them out. It's highly annoying and not really a way to treat your guests. They also do that annoying thing is serving food on slate slabs. What happened to just using a normal plate? There is a reason plates are designed with an upturned lip. It keeps food from sliding onto the table. Regardless, the waitstaff did a great job and we had a delicious meal.

After weeks in Italy, and a 12-hour train ride into the Rhône Alps, we arrived in Annecy, France. The hour was late. We were exhausted. And we were craving an American staple...Salty. Fried. Heavy. Greasy. Something. We were desperate for it. Salt is used sparingly throughout Italy besides in sliced meats. Our tastebuds and systems weren't acclimated and we needed the flavor that can only come from heart-gripping sodium. In walks Le Milton Pub in the heart of Annecy's old town. It happened to be on the lower level of our VRBO rental, so convenience was a factor at the late hour. I'll give you a minute to judge our unsophisticated palettes. I've judged myself just as harshly if not more when I picked an Irish pub in the heart of the French alps. But...Le Milton delivered in the best ways!! Totally Francais Steak and Frites for me. Fish and chips for the kiddos. Pina coladas and a glass of French wine to polish it off. Le Milton turned out to be the best blend of French/Irish pub food that left us so satisfied, we went back again the next night. It was packed around the clock. There would be plenty of time for pate and duck dishes. Le Milton won this round.

We ordered a very good bottle of white Bordeaux from 2010 (85 Euros and worth it, but very reasonable wine was also available). Two gratis appetizers were brought unbidden to the table. The first was toasted bread with a pate of Chicken, and the second was a refreshing mixture of tomato, white and green asparagus, parsley. Wonderful! My wife's first course was was flour dusted and fried octopus, with a sweet Asian-influenced sauce. Mine was a brick of crab meat, green apple, celery, and lemon mayonnaise. Super good. Our mains were chicken in a lovely white sauce with mixed veggies for my wife. Mine was a fillet of flakey white grilled fish with vegetables. Very solid. After the mains we were offered a purée of mango to cleanse the palate. Yummy. Dessert were something special. Kim ordered a plate of chocolate. Doing cake, chocolate cream, and a molten centered chocolate cake, and chocolate ice cream. Our waiter told me that my dessert was the most delicious one in all France called the Louise Cup, in honor of the chef's daughter: vanilla crème brûlée base, spoon biscuit, mint tea jelly, raspberries and raspberry coulis, with whipped cream on top. Let me tell you, it was the best dessert in France! The restaurant is in an out of the way location but within easy walking distance of the train station and other central places. The ambiance was minimalist but fine. We were seated outdoors but there was also inside seating if we had wished. All the other patrons were local French families. We requested to meet the chef afterwards and he was very pleased by our love for his food. Highest recommendation!

Basically, Terrine is a cold dish composed mainly of gelatin and other items they decide to mix in. It wasn't terrible, it's just something we aren't used to. The restaurant is a nicely-decorated one, and the service was fairly good. It's a little pricier than some other restaurants in Annecy, but nothing extravagant.
