Oh my goodness where to begin? !!! I've been doing calligraphy for years and years and in 5 minutes I learned more from Liz than any other teacher. She's a joy to work with so much so that when my kids couldn't figure out what to get me for a gift they made a handmade gift certificate to study with Liz cause they knew I'd LOVE that for sure! Her styles are so much more fun, playful, varied (including romantic and modern) than anyone I've met. Her passion for lettering makes the time fly. In my first class with her there was a woman who had never calligraphied before and me - we both learned a ton and I was amazed at what a newcomer could accomplish in one class!!!! This review should be 2 stars but I feel bad tarnishing this page solely because I have zero patience for individuals being unable to effectively communicate via email in 2015. I will start by saying that I was perfectly satisfied with the work Liz did for me. If this review was based on quality vs. price, it would have been 5 stars. What I was not pleased with was how many times I had to poke and prod her to get an actual result. I had been working on a tattoo idea for about 3 years. Finally committed to some text and wanted a professional to draw it out in pretty font. Nothing on Microsoft word was jiving with me, so I decided to look into a calligrapher. Liz had the highest ratings on yelp. 2 stars seems really harsh, but when I write a yelp review, I think about whether I would recommend the business to a friend. In this particular case, I can't say that I would. After initially reaching out and getting no response, I sent a follow up email 8 days later to see if she was even interested in doing the work for me since it was such a small project. Frankly, overcharging someone for doing one sentence worth of work, versus hundreds of envelopes for a wedding seems kind of a no brainer to me...whatever amount she would have suggested...I would have happily paid. Courtesy is also another big thing for me--it's 2015, I know you have a smart phone and, as such, nearly 24-7 access to email. A simple "Hey, thanks for your email. Sorry I'm super swamped for the next couple of weeks, can I touch base then?" would have been more than OK. After Liz confirmed that she would do the text for me, it took another 6 days to set up a paypal transaction. I paid within half hour of receiving the email prompt and then it took another 3 days to actually get the file via email. Again, all if this would have been OK had she not emailed me that I'd have the file the next day. Again--nothing wrong with the quality--at the end of the day I got several options to work with, but I cannot tolerate this level of slowness/unresponsiveness. I can't imagine paying her to do wedding invites and then sitting on pins and needles waiting to hear back. read more

I could not have been happier with my wedding calligraphy by Liz! The photos on her website speak to her obvious talent, but I want to stress how much we enjoying working with her - Liz was friendly, professional and extremely accommodating even though I'm sure I sent her 4 different drafts of the final guest list (!) Starting with our first meeting in her cozy North End studio, Liz listened to my ideas and worked with me to create the perfect addressing style for my invitations, escort cards, and table numbers. She was able to hone in on the vibe of my wedding and execute it to perfection! Less than a week before my wedding a few errant cousins called to say they were coming to the wedding ... Of course Liz came through like a true professional and had the additional escort cards delivered on time. My friend summed it up perfectly in her email to me ... "I just got back to Boston and received your GORGEOUS invite! I am so impressed! The calligraphy ...I can't say it enough - it is just beautiful." I've always wanted to learn the art of calligraphy and I was looking at Liz's website admiring her work when I realized she offers calligraphy classes at her studio in the North End. For $75, I figured it would be fun and since the course was offered on a Saturday (4p - 6p). Her studio is adorable and is certainly a space that fosters creativity. The class was small - just me, another woman, and Liz herself demonstrating and offering us help as we went along. I learned so much! All supplies -- ink, nibs, stylus, and paper were included. Liz took it one step further and she provided us with practice sheets, lots of grids to help, and font "maps" to help us. She even told us that if we were serious about learning more, there were several art and supply stores in the area where we could get more materials. It was totally awesome and Liz was a great teacher. Her work is awesome and she was great to work with. I can't say enough great things about taking a class with Liz! My class ended up being very small, so it was only me with another girl who had already been there. Liz is just WONDERFUL. I cannot express how excited we were with her work for our wedding! Her small studio is easy to get to (and so cute) and scheduling with her was a breeze. We had her do our invitation addresses and people were blown away when they received them in the mail. I loved the fact that we could choose a color and there were so many different styles. We were so impressed with her on the invites, we went back and had her do all of our signs for our wedding (signs for cards, programs, etc.) and a custom map for our welcome bags. I still can't get over how amazing that map was! It was so impressive. She wrote our wine and beer list on a vintage chalkboard for us and we love it so much we're going to end up keeping it hanging in out kitchen after the wedding. Liz is absolutely phenomenal - she did the calligraphy for my wedding envelopes, and every single one looked like a piece of art. My 87 year old grandmother told me that she had never seen a more beautiful envelope arrive in her mailbox - and I have no doubt she is right! Liz's work is absolutely STUNNING! I worked with Liz when I was sending out my wedding invitations. She was recommended to me by a friend who was very pleased with her work. I thought the order and delivery process worked well. Once I agreed to go with Liz, I placed a deposit via Amazon payments, and delivered to her a word document with my guests' names and addresses in a previously discussed format. We delivered her the envelopes (with a few extras), and Liz was able to deliver the entire order not on the previously established deadline... but early! After we picked up/examined/and cross-checked the envelopes, the invitations were mailed out and the final Amazon payment was placed. I recently took an intro to calligraphy workshop with Liz. The North End studio is cute and fun. The creative gals who work there have project samples displayed all over which was fun to check out. The class was small (3 students max.), casual and chatty. Liz had some great tips for beginners. I left the 2-hour class (which flew by!) excited to practice more on my own and with an added appreciation for the time and work calligraphers put into their work. I have dabbled in calligraphy but the nice thing about going to her class is she corrected some of the things like how I hold the pen etc, which is something you wouldn't know from reading a book. Liz is AMAZING and beyond talented. I used Liz for my wedding save the dates, invitations, and all the calligraphy needs for the wedding reception decor. Everything she did came out even better than I could have imagined. I honestly think that her calligraphy on our wedding invitations was complimented more than anything else with our wedding. We even had one couple tell us that they thought the envelope of our invitation was so beautiful they were going to frame it. If you want to really make a stunning and loud impression for your wedding (or any important event), use Liz. I emailed her two weeks ago and she responded while she was on vacation letting me know that she would love to help me out and we scheduled an appointment for the following week. I wouldn't call what Liz offers a "class" but instead a 2 hr session talking about her career over the last 25 years. Don't worry, once she finally comes up for air she lets you play with ink and trace letters for about 20 minutes before you run out of time. Prepare to be crammed in a small room on the most uncomfortable chairs and given a few materials that you could have easily purchased for about twenty dollars. Advice - take the $90.00 it costs and go buy a calligraphy book at a craft store and watch some YouTube videos . My fiancé and I live in the N. End and stumbled upon Liz's studio early-fall and were so impressed by her window display that we decided to contact her to do the calligraphy for our wedding invitation envelopes this Spring. Liz's style is really unique - we really enjoyed stuffing each individual envelope to see how she was able to make each name and address seem like a little piece of art. Her work is certainly affordable - we were definitely on a bit of a budget planning our wedding but really wanted to spend some money on some of the fine details and couldn't be more pleased with Liz's work. She also suggested making a custom rubber stamp with her unique lettering style to stamp the return envelopes and return address on the outer envelope which made everything come together really nicely.
