Cedar Grove Mansion Inn & Restaurant - Pool area (looking toward walkway to main house/check-in)

We stayed in the River View Suites, NOT the main house because we were traveling with our dog and only certain suites accommodate guests with dogs. In short, don't plan a stay at the River View suites expecting modern anything in terms of decor, lighting, bath, etc. Upon approach, pulling into the lot, it is at best intriguingly confusing, and at worst awkwardly sketchy. In short, the main house is a beautifully authentic house surrounded by grounds that mostly do not match that of the main house. First impressions set a tone, so the owner would do well to consider paving all parking/driveway areas and polishing the greenery/foliage. The main building where you check-in and can stay is beautiful (to anyone who admires authentically well-preserved 19th century homes). The grounds themselves are filled with the potential to convey the opulent charm of the 19th century gardens that adorned homes such as this one. However, they are a work in progress and you shouldn't expect to have your breath taken away in their current state. I will point-out, the pool area is a quaint little space with foliage and four ornamental fountain statues adorning each corner of the pool. It's small but uniquely inviting. Now in terms of accommodations... As stated, we stayed in one of the neighboring buildings (River View Suites, suite 34), on the "2nd floor" (which is technically the 3rd floor because there is a ground level used for housekeeping activities such as laundry). The 2 flights of stairs are steep so be warned if you have difficulty climbing stairs. The view up there is nice, overlooking some of the grounds and a piece of the river behind it. All-in-all, besides the occasional thumping of subwoofers coming from cars that drive on the street behind the property, it was a peaceful location on the grounds. Inside the suite itself, the appointments are all intended to be authentic to the 19th century so don't expect a couch/chair to melt into at the end of a long day touring Vicksburg. Having been to plenty of 19th century plantation homes and mansions across the south, I didn't mind it, and it was something worth experiencing once (ie being surrounded by classic furniture/decor). In terms of comfort, the king bed with a 25" flat screen was a welcome retreat after a long day exploring Vicksburg and/or enjoying the huge balcony of our suite (which is shared with two other suites, but they were unoccupied most of our stay). The balcony runs end-to-end with the building so even if the other suites were/are occupied, you shouldn't feel cramped but you will share the space. Where the suite was found a bit wanting was ventilation. The AC works well (constant 70 degrees) but air flow is non-existent in the bathroom spaces (double sink-vanity area, separate shower area, and separate toilet/jacuzzi tub area). That made for a constantly humid feeling while in the bathroom space (if there is an operational fan/vent, we couldn't find it). The bedroom area also does not have the best airflow but the airflow is certainly adequate enough to make it comfortable. A note about the bathroom: the shower is something to behold. Specifically, the shower-head. For Seinfeld aficionados, think "Commando 450." This thing is capable of bathing circus elephants. Also, the toilet was wobbly; not to the point where you felt like you were fishing on the Mississippi but just enough to question your sanity a bit. In terms of staff/service/cleanliness, the entire suite and property was clean. And every staff member we encountered, morning (for complimentary breakfast) and night (for formal dinner), was a delight. Everyone was very polite, friendly, and accommodating. Note: the food was good but nothing standout-ish. I would only eat here out of convenience of staying here. In closing, with enough investment, this place could be a truly amazing destination for people seeking an experience that transports them back to a taste of the 19th century. It offers an ambiance and environment you won't easily find anywhere else. I think this location is a microcosm of Vicksburg itself: a beautiful place with the potential to become the most beautiful version of itself.

I saw that Ron White one of my favorite comedians was coming to Vicksburg so I thought I would go for a visit see good friends, catch the show. Horrible disappointment. The staff did nothing to control the crowd. First 2 large doors next to where we were sitting were left open during the opening act - so a steady flow of people talking and a bright light in the dim room was huge distraction. There was a set of doors further down that could have been used and would have been much less of a distraction. Then once Ron White took the stage my friend had to ask them to shut the doors but that did little to help because they continued to allow constant stream of people in and out. It has always totally escaped me why people will pay $60 or more for a ticket and not sit and watch the show. It is the responsibility of the venue to control the flow of people who are so inconsiderate so those who wish to see and hear the performance can!!! The crowd was lit up with cell phone lights and Mr. White even had to call at least 3 people out about it - an announcement was made prior to the show of course people think that rules are for everyone else that is why SECURITY has to make an example and remove people who are filming or disturbing others with their phones. At one point Mr. White asked a couple on the front row to be quiet - right then security should have come over and at least stood to let their presence be known. Then as the couple continued to be a disruption he requested security remove them - security actually LEFT and several minutes went by before security re- appeared. It was insanity!! Had they been a physical threat to him or others as drunk belligerent people often are there would have been no one to intervene. The final Straw was when those who had been ejected reappeared shortly after "to get her purse"!! These security people were PAID to do a JOB! Needless to say he cut the show short - totally understandable. I have seen him many times and he has never gone on for less than 1 and half hours. The show started at 8:10 p and was over about 9:30 p. Since it was the venues lack of crowd control that caused it they should issue at least partial refunds. I drove 4 hours to see the show. Thankfully my friends are fantastic respectful people with manners who know how to act in public so I did have a fabulous time otherwise. I will NEVER attend any event at this venue. Perhaps next time they should give breathalyzers along with scanning for weapons and stop serving people who are clearly intoxicated. The gentleman sitting next to me could barely walk and he left not once but twice and returned each time with another beer....... EPIC FAILURE of the management. Consider changing your slogan from "going beyond your expectations"....SERIOUSLY P.S. please train your ushers to hold patron tickets down and shine their flashlights down to lead people to seats once the houselights are down as not to BLIND the other patrons trying to see the show. I worked 5 years during college as an usher at The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, The Majestic Theater and The Dallas Music Hall - I know how an event should be executed - this wasn't even CLOSE. I have traveled all over the US and abroad - Vicksburg this was a very poor example of "Southern Hospitality" for which the south is known - The Red Carpet City rolled it up this night!!.

I have never thrown an axe before, but this was extremely fun. You must fill out a waiver due to safety concerns with sharp objects, so be careful. Emily was the person who assisted me and she was a gem and very encouraging. It took me a little while to get my positioning and stance down, but once I was comfortable I had a blast. This is exercise, or can be LOL. I was sweating bullets due to all the running back-and-forth and intensity of the throws. The staff was very accommodating and sweet and I was so happy that I stopped in to try this activity today.

Pretty cool atmosphere with very friendly and personable staff. Brandon, our throwing coach, really helped with detailed instructions to help us stick the axe and the girl who kept a cold one nearby was awesome! (Hate that I didn't get her name!) Along with axe throwing, foosball, cornhole & pool was available to keep you entertained! Great music playing in the background which I must add that was a playlist made up by the girl that I failed to get her name. When I asked about it she said she tried to put a little of everything for everyone! Excellent Idea!! There is even a hole in the floor covered with plexiglass that is an old tunnel with water that they have put fish in!! Great vibe here from the staff to the bathroom signs and even the bathroom faucets that light up when using them! Go check this place out if ever in Vicksburg!
