I hired her in September before reporting to prison to pursue an ineffective assistance of counsel claim against my previous attorney. During our consultation, she strongly criticized my former attorney, told me he did a terrible job, and even stated that the judge in my case was racist and that she planned to request that the judge be recused. Based on those conversations, I trusted her and paid an initial $15,000 retainer. Unfortunately, months went by and nothing meaningful appeared to happen on my case. No filings were made, no clear strategy was communicated, and I was left constantly trying to get updates on next steps. Then, after about four months, when I started asking questions, I was told I needed to pay another $15,000, which I did because I believed my case was still being worked on and time was critical. Then, only about two months before my appeal opportunity expired, I received another request for an additional $30,000. At that point, I declined. Shortly afterward, she withdrew from my case entirely and left me without representation during a critical period. My advice to anyone considering hiring any attorney is to carefully read the retainer agreement line by line and make sure every promise, strategy, or expectation discussed during consultations is clearly written into the agreement before paying large retainers. In my experience, the retainer was broad and vague and did not clearly reflect many of the things discussed during our conversations. I also strongly encourage people to do extensive research, ask detailed questions about billing practices, timelines, deliverables, and communication expectations upfront before making a hiring decision. In my personal experience, a substantial amount of money was paid with little to no meaningful progress made on my case.
