Terrible Experience at The Selby - A Building That's Fallen Apart Due to Management…read more As a long-time tenant at The Selby, I am beyond frustrated with the current state of this building. It has been a nightmare living here for the past several months, and it's clear that the management is more focused on bringing in new tenants than actually maintaining the building and taking care of the people who are already living here. Let's start with the elevators--absolutely unacceptable for a 51-storey building. They've been consistently out of service, with sometimes only one functioning elevator for the entire building. Tenants and delivery individuals are regularly getting stuck for up to an hour. One of the most disturbing incidents occurred when my partner was trapped in an elevator that malfunctioned, causing the cable to break. He free-fell six floors before the emergency brakes finally kicked in--thankfully, they did, or this could have been a much worse outcome. When firefighters arrived to rescue him, they pulled the broken cable off the top of the elevator car when getting him out. This is not just an inconvenience, it's a serious safety hazard that should never have been allowed to happen. To make matters worse, multiple tenants have been experiencing ongoing hot water issues for months. The hot water has been on and off, and it's become a consistent problem. It's utterly ridiculous to have to deal with cold showers or unpredictably hot water, especially when you're paying premium rent for a "luxury" building. It's another example of the management's blatant disregard for basic living conditions. Flooding, with both boiling hot and freezing cold water, has also been a major problem, with consistent incidents forcing tenants out of their homes. This isn't just a minor inconvenience--it's a serious problem that clearly shows the building's maintenance is being neglected. On top of that, amenities are frequently closed without notice, making us feel like we're paying for services we can't even use. Incredibly, during all of this turmoil--including the elevator issue--management has been attempting to show the building to potential future tenants. This is not only tone-deaf, but it shows that they're more concerned with bringing in new people than taking care of the current residents who are suffering through these constant disruptions. It can, at times, take up to 30 minutes or more to go down or up the elevator back to our unit. Not only is this difficult for us as humans, but its even worse for those of us with pets. To top it all off, management's communication is a complete disaster. There's zero transparency, and important updates are either delayed or entirely omitted. It's like they don't care about the people who are already living here. The building's cleanliness has also deteriorated significantly since the changes made in the new year, which only adds to the growing list of complaints. I honestly don't know how this place still has tenants. The Selby management clearly has no regard for its current residents. Instead of focusing on trying to attract new people, maybe it's time they start doing their job and take care of the ones who are already here with signed leases. We deserve better. That being said, I must acknowledge the concierge team--they truly do their best with what they are given and are always professional and helpful despite the challenges. However, it's clear this issue falls on upper management, who continue to neglect their responsibility to the tenants who make up this community. The amazing concierge staff can only do so much with the limited resources they have--this is an upper management issue, and it's time they take full responsibility.

The company that owns the Selby, Tricon, which he owned by some other American company, has managed to skirt the rent control laws that apply to almost every other building in the city. They will tell you that their increases are normal, or maybe slightly above because of the building's facade, but make no mistake, their rent increases go well above the 2% maximum that the law mandates for most other buildings in the city. My neighbour received a 5% increase their first year and a 7% increase the second year, the people a few floors up got a 7% increase, and a woman in the internal WhatsApp Group said she got a 9% increase. I got a 4% increase my first year and approx. 4.5% increase my second year. They have fired almost all of their staff, even in the time I have been here the concierges have almost entirely changed - fired or quit. The management team was moved to their other properties they are opening, they cut back on services, and you have to pay to use the gym if you want someone you know to train you now apparently. If you check Reddit and other sites you will see people say the same thing - management focus almost entirely on revenue generation. I recently saw the TV show 60 minutes that did a special on Tricon's CEO (google it),and they talked about how greedy this company is and what they are doing to the housing market, they see $$$ and have no remorse. Why do I still live here? Because I can walk to work and my husband has a 5 minute commute, but we are going to look at a different property ever since we learned about the 9% increase. It highway robbery. They are charging almost $4000 for a two bedroom on some floors. A mortgage on a condo costs less than that! Also beware - once since we moved in but apparently a few times before that, all 4 elevators were out of service. Try walking up 30, 40 or 50 flights of stairs because they can't keep their elevators working. It's actually illegal for that to happen even.

Karen is a foreign student at U of T and wanted to live in a luxury apartment. That takes money. Money is supposed to make Karen's life perfect. It had a little obstacle. Oh, it must be the fault of the handicapped fellow downstairs. Karen can't be inconvenienced. I am the handicapped person downstairs. I don't like cockroaches and certainly never "refused" to do anything about them. I struggled to control my cockroaches over a year or so - in the height of the pandemic. (With underlying conditions I was in isolation). Eventually - just as Karen was giving up and moving out - I overcame my handicaps to clear out my kitchen and bathrooms (and get my cats into their carriers for evacuation) and had my apartment sprayed - twice. I don't have cockroaches now. It is a shame that someone brought cockroaches to this wonderful building. They are undesirable. However, I have found that the managers are very responsive to any request that I have made to control these creatures and that those controls have been effective. Living here is a wonderful experience. The location is A1. Near three subway stations and Yorkville, it would be hard to think of a better place to be. The apartments are huge, air conditioned and have dishwashers. The management team is super friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Repairs - which for me have been minor - are addressed the next day after I make a request. Despite the fact that there are lots of students living here, I never hear any noise. Life is very peaceful. The building has "good bones" including good sound insulation. (When I was student I made lots of noise.) I couldn't think of a nicer place to live and recommend this place highly.

The place: They are huge, well taken care of and you always feel super safe. The landlord is unreal and makes you feel like you are part of their family. No noise complaints in two years - and my roommates and I do like to party. If you want to live near everything and not pay out your ass for yorkville rent, look up 55 charles. It's not a luxury building, but it's pretty damn nice and they keep upgrading. Good times at 55.

You have to pay extra for a spot in the underground parking lot, but there is a small visitor's lot for short-term parking too. Apparently, even non-residents can rent spots by the month if they happen to work nearby, for example.

It would be nice if they labeled the floor number with the parking spot number to make sure there is no confusing. Parking is the shorter entrance as the parking garage goes underground. Look for the yellow clearance sign with two arms and a call button to enter. The parking area or location wasn't really clear on the original notice. We had to go through the parking elevator down to the lobby/concierge. You must check in, input info, take pics of your driver's license, booking info. Need your car license plate. Concierge will fob you to take the elevator up to your floor. It's on the 65th floor and is way at the top. Goes up to the 67th floor here at the Ice apartment building. The room is mostly IKEA and quite cheaply decorated. The night stands and dining chairs have gouges all over the place. The bed is cheap and small. The bedroom and apartment is fully exposed to daylight. There are no window treatments or blinds to the sun or daylight. The glass panels for the bedrooms are just glass. It feels like we are in a fish bowl. Bathroom is quite small, but hopefully functional. The bath towels were wet while rolled on the bed. Looking out and hanging out of your window is quite unnerving. You are way up here. Don't drop your phone. No coffee maker here, but at least there is a water heater kettle. The sheets look dirty on my side of the bed. The dishwasher isn't bolted in, so be careful when loading the top shelf. Crazy to be in the middle of clouds and fog when you can't see the top of the skyscrapers. Different when you are in one of the skyscrapers on the top floor. The elevator on one of the three for the high rise moves quickly. We had to check in at the lobby, that was a bit of a pain in the butt.
