I came in to buy some French editions of my favorite books for my collection and had a great experience. This shop was well organized and had the best selection. Librairie Pantoute - Books - Bookstores Near Me - Quebec City, Quebec

I had already been to this independent bookstore's other location in Quebec City, but was glad to learn they had a store in Old/Vieux Quebec closer to my hotel. Despite being in the midst of all the tourist action, the place was a welcome bookish refuge. I popped in to buy a new journal for my travels, but I easily got side tracked by the many French-language titles (the majority of the store). There also happened to be a book launch going on, with an author reading and bubbly beverages. Too bad I couldn't stay to listen and imbibe! The store was surprisingly large for the downtown area, with a mezzanine level accessed by stairs. They seemed to be shuffling things around, as several sections up there were partially empty. Their stationary section was a little sparse, but I found a fun notebook from a local brand that suited my needs, and the staff was very friendly as I checked out. VERY NICE BOOKSTORE We came by Librairie Pantoute during a walk to a nearby restaurant on Rue Saint Jean. It was a treat to browse through this very large bookstore. We especially enjoyed the children's book section where we saw French translations of many of our favorite children story books. Amazing collection of books and looks like it is from a movie - a spiral staircase to the upper level to the wall of Ltirerature Anglais. One section of classics, one of modern future-classics, one of detective books, then the new fantasy genre. Against the railings - indigenous authors, francophone Canadian authors translated books and so much more. My wife wanted a book to read in the evening (Hilary Mantel) and we bought five, including the indigenous authors I rarely see in anglophone chains. Then we were served by the staff person who has the dream-job of looking after the selecting their Anglophone inventory. we were drawn in by their window display of great reading choices in French, and left with great reading choices in English and a desire to move to Quebec City just for the bookstore! read more

Beautiful bookstore in Quebec City. They have a great variety of books for all ages and the store is really well organized. I bought some books for my nieces and a book for myself. The employees were very friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend stopping in when in Quebec City! read more

I walked in here specifically to get a special book to remember my trip from Quebec. I love that they have a section featuring Quebecois authors! It made my browsing really easy and I found something that I think I'll love. I was specifically looking for something in French (French language books are so expensive in the US!), so I can't say anything about their selection of books in English, but I was well pleased by the selection of French books, and the organization of it made it super easy to find exactly what I wanted. Staff was very friendly. Even though I can read French, I can't speak it all that well and they didn't seem at all annoyed to have to speak to me in English. Majority of the books here were in French. In fact, easily 98% of it was. They had a small 8' section in English, but I especially appreciated a piece of that section being Canadian Authors. I focused there, and happy to find a book that drew me in. read more

Speaking as an American visitor, I can't really say too much on their overall book collection which I think are majority French, but with English-speaking selections too, though my impression is that this is not their focus. However, as a comic book enthusiast, I was really quite blown away by their impressive graphic novel area of high-quality European French comics selections spanning several bookshelves, which was even divided into genres (historical, fantasy/sci-fi, adventure, humor, erotic, indie/zines, etc)! It made me feel like a kid in a candy store as I stumbled on a huge variety of publications I'd never seen before. All the books are new, regularly full priced ($20+), so seriously - be prepared to spend a lot. The people working there seemed pretty nice and quite knowledgeable as well. Only thing I gotta say is to watch your step. I keep stumbling on the barely noticeable slightly raised platform as I go in, and as I go out, lol. read more
