I know people sometimes aren't happy with the way a job comes out, but that is not what this review is about. I went to Zen in York in early May & met with a sales rep. She was nice & accommodating when we first met. I picked my stones & made my template appt. I made a point of asking her, more than once, if she had contacted Cambria (the manf. of my island slab) with my question/request & ordered my island slab & she said yes. I never received an answer on my request. She then informed me on a later visit they don't order until after templating (even though I gave my deposit). I had no idea whether she ordered it. The owner, Lenny, came out to template. He acted like a know it all & everyone on site was taken aback by his demeanor. The sales rep at Zen had made it a point to tell me, more than once, that he is a narcissist. Less than 24 hrs after the template I asked for 2 minor minor changes on 2 overhangs. One change was from 3/4" to 1/2" on a small separate counter piece. The other was from 1 1/2" to 3/4" on the interior island overhang. I asked & asked & asked in writing for confirmation of these minor changes for well over a week, which could easily be made on the computer template, especially the island which was free standing. About a week before the install, which was on Tues. June 6th, the sales rep sent an email saying that the Cambria slab came in damaged. She then said it would be 4 to 6 weeks to get another one from Canada! I thought that to be impossible since the slab I picked from Cambria is the most popular one being sold by them. Then the sales rep had the audacity to email me 3 days before the install date to say that they needed to template again because of my minor changes. Needless to say I was irate! When she told me the slab would be 4-6 weeks I requested they call around to find the slab elsewhere. I also requested the names of the companies she called. Later she told me she felt I was saying she was incompetent based on my request. I explained to her that it is my style to get on the horn & find what's needed but I wasn't going to waste my time calling the same companies that she had already contacted. I also asked for proof that she ordered the Cambria a month before - I received no response. When someone goes on the defense it's obvious that mistakes were made. As the customer who paid a large deposit, we are entitled to ask questions & get answers. She also never asked about any stairs or obstacles for delivery. I am on the third floor without an elevator. After my template appointment they added $700 to my invoice for delivery. We had been working with this company for well over a month so I was too deep in & had time constraints, so agreed to the additional cost. After the template she went up on my quote by about $2500 stating that they needed more material. When we initially met I provided a very detailed plan with all the measurements & an estimate for my backsplash. Anyone working in this industry should be able to calculate sq. ft needed when they get a floor plan. I needed 2 slabs instead of 1 & this company couldn't tell me that based on the actual measurements I gave. When I contacted them after they told me they were canceling my install, I told them if they cancel I would not be using them. I called Cambria directly and they said their product doesn't come out of Canada- it comes out of Minnesota. I feel I was lied to and this company wasted my time. I was able to find another company on June 4th who actually came out & templated on June 6th & installed all my countertops in two weeks! The Cambria slab arrived in one week after they ordered it. Amazing! When I went in for my refund & complained about their service the sales rep said "I thought you were cool". I said "I thought you were working for me." She then said that she didn't feel right about this job from the beginning. Wow! Who says that to a Customer. When she informed me the owner was a narcissist & didn't pay her much, I should have run. When they refused to keep my install appointment the owner emailed me & said "we haven't built trust with you and we don't trust you". How unprofessional. I guess it's because I was asking questions they couldn't answer. It's obvious they never called around for my slab, they never sent me a photo of the damaged slab or the initial order they made. It's obvious the owner didn't want the job. If they had just been honest I could have moved on quicker. There are dozens of granite/quartz companies to choose from. I ended up using Granite Galaxy in Hopkinton, MA. They traveled to Maine, carried my slabs up stairs at no cost. They were prompt, professional & knew exactly how much material I needed the moment they got my floor plan. They also ended up being less than Zen. I would give Zen 0 stars and would never recommend them to anyone.
