Here goes my story about the Grafton and Upton UU church. For the last three winters I have been…read morehired to shovel the sidewalk and stairs in the front of the church. I have been paid well although getting up early so that you can shovel snow is quite annoying and sometimes I feel like I don't get enough, probably needed more sleep. This was good and the money supplemented my high school income (currently zero), so I was eager when my "boss" asked me if I was interested in becoming a janitor. By janitor there are some small complications. One being that I was a part time janitor, the other being that I was also temporary janitor. So I was the part-time temp from the Unitarian Universalist Society of Grafton and Upton. I got the always sufficient minimum wage and was happy because I only worked about seven hours a week. Since I was only hired to be the janitor before the church got another one, I was only hired for 5.5 weeks. I did mundane tasks such as vacuuming, dry mopping, wet mopping (that's right it is different, besides the obvious difference in H20), and washing the... ahem... toilets. It is kind of fun doing mindless work although I do consider myself moderately intelligent. After the five plus weeks I was happy not having to avoid cleaning around such events as AA and Narcotics Anonymous, not to mention Girl Scouts. I don't know if I would do it again if I could, but I can say that everyone, well almost everyone, that I encountered at the church was extremely nice and I would consider going there (If I wasn't an agnostic) and even leaving my child there (If I had a child). Also all the programs at the church, especially mass are in an extremely nice building except for the lack of parking.

The members treated us as family from the beginning and we have many long lasting relationships with people we may never have met. The Jr. Woman's club does a great job as well, as does St. Bernadettes, St. Rose, Trinity, and other wonderful local civic groups. A great big THANKS to all of you. Sometimes I watch their Sunday services on the local cable access channel, which I think is wonderful for those who can't make it to service. We found this church quite literally by accident (we intended to go to a church in a different town…read morebut ended up in Westborough instead). And we are so glad and grateful that we did! More than a year later, there's still so much to learn and try and all I can say is... this is a very special, alive church. There is so much going on! Now that we have been there a year I am looking forward to the Great Pie Challenge (I had never seen hundreds of apple pies in one place before) and the Cookie Walk to benefit the music program that are both happening in the next few weeks. There are some great adult education opportunities going on all the time (ALPHA is almost always in progress, and that is a terrific thing to participate in) and we also took part in a wonderful group study on marriage and relationships last spring. The church has been around since the 1700 and has an amazing story - and yet don't let that fool you into thinking it's an 'old' church. That is not the vibe at all. I have never seen so much going on in such a small community and with so much forward thinking. It was important to my husband and me that we find a church that was Open and Affirming - and it is - the church's 'tagline' is "We are a community of open doors and growing faith" - 100% true. I am rating solely on the venue that the church rents out and NOT on the church. We rented the…read morespace for an event that fell on a holiday weekend. When I originally toured the venue I asked the woman from the church, Megan, specifically if we would need police detail and was told that we didn't unless there were over 250 people, which we did not have. After the deposit was put down and contract was signed we were then told that we needed police detail afterall. Communication is very poor and management is beyond unorganized! The woman in charge did not know whether or not the stove worked and could not address my questions/concerns accordingly. The day of the event; maybe an hour or two in, another woman (older woman) from the church came in while we were having the event and was inspecting the kitchen. We were questioned about whether or not the cutting board we had used was ours. Mind you, we brought our own pots, pans, utensils as we were given an "I don't know" when asked if we would have access to pots, pans, ect. First of all, we don't need to steal a cutting board and secondly, if we're forking over $2000+ for a venue I'm more then certain we could afford our own. Smh! If it's so concerning, my suggestion would be to keep an inventory of items or write the church name on it. Problem solved! We were told by this older woman that the venue needed to be cleaned that night when the other woman we had been working with had sent an email stating we had 2 hrs to clean the following day. This older women was adamant about clearing plates as soon as the guests were done eating and that the place had to be cleaned that evening regardless of what the email said! How rude is it to be cleaning off the tables while guests are trying to enjoy themselves?! Absurd! There was also a playground that we thought would've been nice for the kids to play on while we had the event and after the situation with this older woman about the kitchen, we asked if we could use the playground and was told "NO, it's only used for church services." We took all these things into account before renting this venue and was then told otherwise! Had we known, and if we weren't so pressed for time, we would've rented another place quick, fast and in a hurry! This older woman we dealt with was extremely rude and unprofessional! To top things off, I called for the refund check to be mailed. There was no mention of any issues, but when I received the check it was only half the amount with a letter indicating supplies were missing, there was broken glass, vomit, etc. Are you serious? If you can help it, GO ELSEWHERE! Though the place is spacious, we would save ourselves the headache next time!!
