As an aviation enthusiast, I love flying in anything, but flying in the Stearman biplane was by far the best aviation experience of my life. Most of my "hours" have been gained behind the exit row, so being outside as I fly was an entirely new experience. It was skydiving meets single engine aviation, or like being a big yellow bird with wheels for feet. Either way, it was exhilarating. Our pilot, Michael Gerred, had intimate knowledge of the plane and knows every part and function. He personally rebuilt that plane. Your safety is never in question with him. Michael took us on a wild and fun ride and even let us fly. We even tried out some crop dusting, negative G maneuvers too. Taking off and landing from the grass was a once in a lifetime experience. I wish I could fly again with him soon . Next stop, balloon ride with Michael!

This was a wonderful experience! It was smooth sailing from beginning to end and our flight crew, Mike and Mark, couldn't have been nicer or more competent. The unpacking and inflating of the balloon, the actual flight and the deflating and packing up of the balloon were all fascinating and made to look easy even though it was obviously a lot of work. Kudos to Light Flight Hot Air Balloons!

    Mark & Mike! GREAT RIDE!

Ask the Community - Light Flight Balloons

    Is there a weight limit?

There is no weight limit per se. We do require passenger weights for flight planning purposes and passengers over 275 pounds may have to elect a private charter or opt to fly in cooler weather.

    How much for a ride?

As of July 2022, flights are $300 per passenger for a one hour flight. The entire adventure takes 2.5 to 3 hours from start to finish.

My husband took me on a hot air balloon ride for our 16th anniversary. He worked directly with…read moreVince, the owner of Sky Riders, to organize the ride. We had a truly lovely time on the balloon ride. It felt very peaceful in the balloon, as if we were floating gently through the sky. We got to see such lovely landscape and even floated for a little while right above a forest canopy. The whole experience was magical. Things to Know: (1) Because the weather needs to be just right, be prepared to have to change dates quite a few times before actually having the ride--the owner is very careful about avoiding any potential dangers that could come with inclement weather (even on a mildly windy day). Because of this, he will call you the night before your scheduled ride to give you an update. We ended up having to reschedule 4 or 5 times and I will say, it was worth the wait, as our ride was perfect. (2) The owner and crew have riders meet them in the parking lot of the Limerick Diner. They do a balloon test there and use it to decide the field from which to take off. Then, the passengers hop into the truck with the owner and crew and ride to the field. There, you get to watch the crew set up and fill the balloon. This takes about 15-20 minutes. Similarly, when you land, you wait in the field while they empty the balloon and pack everything away. This will take another 20 or so minutes. Watching the process is very cool. (3) The ride itself runs between 45-90 minutes, depending on weather, wind, and other factors. You travel about 7-10 miles. (4) The company offers rides for 2 or 4 people. We rode in the basket for 2 (plus the pilot), which was really a cool experience. (5) As we prepared for the ride, many of our friends and neighbors kept telling us hot air balloons were "scary" and "dangerous." We found this not to be true. We felt very safe the whole time and Vince was clearly a very seasoned, safe, and thoughtful pilot. Our ride was very smooth and peaceful and we would do it again in a heartbeat.

The ride was nothing shy of breathtaking and absolutely amazing. Smooth sailing all the way. Ended on a high note, even after being safely returned to our starting point. Concluding with Friendly banter, a celebratory glass of champagne and a proud pilot recanting the flight from a technical perspective. Team effort on their part made our experience something to remember.

Chesapeake Bay Balloon & Wine Festival - The single inflated balloon, and the half inflated one.

My friend bought tickets for him and me for this event after we heard about it on Facebook and saw…read morethe bright, beautiful photos on the event page. For something that's called a "balloon and wine festival" that lasts nine hours, there were no balloons for 7 hours of their 9 hours of operation and no wine tasting. You pay by the glass ($6) or by the bottle. A wine festival does not have just four wines; the range of wines on the Triple Creek Winery website has far more wines than what they offered at the festival. No other wine types. It's extremely misleading. There are vendors that sell arts, crafts, jewelry, Maryland flags painted on wood ($200), and Solar City was even there to sell you energy-efficient solar panels! There's also a gutter-cleaning service ready to explain their products to you. Good grief. Note that these vendors likely paid the festival organizers to have a table/presence at the festival and thus the potential of thousands of future customers. You're paying $20 and fees to be sold the chance that the hot air balloons might go up. $35 on-site parking or $5 off-site parking with a shuttle (a school bus). If you get there at noon, you'll sit around for 8 hours for balloons. These folks cast a wide net for the term "weather permitting," which means anything more than a 6 mph wind the balloons cannot go up. The balloons evidently did go up around 7:30 pm, and the event ends at 9 pm, so that's your window in but there's no way of knowing ahead of time. It's just roll of dice. You go in that sweet window, you're happy; you don't, you're disappointed. My friend spoke to the man in charge/owner, a bellicose man who sternly said that he doesn't know when the wind will die down, and he has no control over it, but he certainly was counting cash as it rolled in from otherwise duped visitors. He told us rudely that we were free to leave and that no refunds will be given. Then he said we should go listen to the live music, which was a local artist singing to no audience. He then randomly mentioned 6,000 visitors on Friday. Seeing all of the disappointed reviews from dozens of others who came to the event page on Facebook and the winery's own page on Facebook to express their concerns about this event being a waste or time, misleading, and overpriced led me to wonder if there was a Yelp page; there wasn't until now. The signage for parking was poor, the communication was lacking and extremely poor, the festival website is confusing and disorganized. I have already informed friends and family that this is a waste of money and time. The festival, and the organizers, are full of hot air. Volunteers are staffed at the location. I'm happy that they do have satisfied visitors but I was certainly not one of them. We drove an hour and half to get there. Definitely not worth it.

The pro's: Parking…read morewas easy and plentiful lots of volunteers around the parking and entrance Was able to use etickets purchased online without hassle Lots of food trucks (a few good one's!) Some diverse vendors 2 Large tents for shade A few bounce houses for young kids 2 carnival type games Lines were not long on a Sunday afternoon There was 1 ATM machine Cute engraved wine glass Cons: Apparently hot air balloons are unpredictable, so they may or may not be at the festival and may or may not have tethered rides. They need better communication as to the status of the hot air balloons (maybe something like a Santa tracker) to let customers know what to expect. Most vendors only accept cash..huh? Who carries cash anymore when there's Square??? There was no flights for wine tasting available-only by the glass at $5 per glass. I probably would have purchased a couple of flights while waiting around for the balloons...but since I felt like I was already getting overcharged-at $30 per person, I think offering full flights, even at a small cost should be part of the event- I bought ONE glass of wine and that's it! Since there's not much to do when the balloons aren't around, there should be more things to occupy time. Perhaps tours of the vineyards, the distillery, more carnival games, more live entertainment glass blowing, history of hot air balloons...anything! There is zero shade! The two tents were set up on either side of the fields, but not anywhere near the stage with the band...who is going to stand in the 90+ sun to watch an unknown band??? Not me and apparently nobody else (since there was nobody watching the poor guys perform). Water stations even if water jugs were filled with tap- or spots where bottled water could be purchased quickly. I felt like this event isn't worth more than $10-$15 per person and they charged up to $35! I've been to free events that was much better than the Absent Balloon festival. Very disappointed and dissatisfied since I, like many others drove more than 2 hours to see this non-event. I will not be going again, I wouldn't recommend this festival in the future.
