It was a very close knit Christian community, then, and from recent articles I've read, in an effort to catch-up, since returning to Wisconsin, from South Texas, where I settled, and worked, once my children were grown. It was a wonderful church to bring up children in, giving them a a great understanding and a solid foundation in the Bible, which is the foundation for the Churches of Christ. "Where the Bible speaks, we listen, and try to live it. Where the Bible is silent, we are silent." I hear this simple, straightforward statement about walking in and living a life for Christ, when I first became a Christian, at the age of 17. After becoming very dissatisfied with the Catholic religion, the only formal contact I had with a church, as a small child attending a Catholic school. My parents were Christian, but neither attended any church. As a teen, I wanted to have a place to renew my spirit, and began searching. A family that I babysat for, invited me to attend church with them, one Sunday, it was an instrumental Church of Christ. I found something there that had been missing in my life, studied, and at 17, was buried with Christ in baptism, in obedience to God's word. After graduating from nursing school, I relocated, after I was married. This is where I started attending a non-insturmental Church of Christ, being the only Church of Christ in the area. The basic beliefs do not change between instrumental and non-insturmental, except that, though there is nothing wrong with musical instruments in the church, the Bible doesn't include them as a necessity. The non-insturmental churches consider the natural Acapella voices make a joyful noise to the Lord, without competing with musical instruments in the mix! In my personal opinion, having to sing Acapella encourages worshipers to sing with their best voices. It's beautiful! Sorry I digressed, somewhat, but Northtown Church of Christ was a great church, as a mission Church, with Harold Shank and Bob Epperly as ministers, and also, missionaries working to establish a much needed church, in a very undeserved area of Milwaukee! In the mid 1980's, I believe, when church member had reached about 200 families and the church was becoming more self-sustaiñing, Harold was asked to return to Highland Street, in Memphis, while Bob Epperly stayed to support Harold's replacement. Shortly after Rob McRay replaced Harold, my life also took a turn, which required me to relocate, and necessitated attending a Church of Christ closer to my new residence. Since leaving Northtown Church of Christ, and with the ability to obtain information quickIy on the new information highway, I have, from time to time checked to see what wqs going on, at Northtown. Though most of the original members of the 1970's and '80's, seem to have moved on, the church, itself seems to have maintained its following and brought in parishioners from the surrounding neighborhoods, which was the goal when it was established as a mission Church. When I was working and traveling, in the south, Texas, Tennessee, Arizona, and other, "Bible belt states, I had occasion to visit some of the, "mega churches" that are prevalent in those areas of our country. I have to say, though the services were inspiring and the people very nice, it reminded me more of a business, trying to reach a fiscal goal rather than a church! Being so large it seemed that any possibility of fellowship was remote. For myself, a small community/neighborhood church, like Northtown with it's membership of around 200 families, is more in keeping with the model of the early Christian churches of the Bible, such as Northtown, and the small neighborhood Instrumental Church of Christ, I attended, as a new Christian. With racial diversity, a membership of about 200 families, and simple, Bible based values and teachings, it is a down to earth church emphasizing family values, spiritual growth, and retention of the youth, as they reach the age where they understand being obedient to God's word by being buried with him in baptism for the forgiveness of sins and being reborn, or putting on Christ, in their own lives, as they become adults. However, this is taught from early Bible School, forward without pressure or guilt. A great place to spend a Sunday morning, coming away refreshed and recharged, in spirit, for the coming week!

It's not an uncommon memory for…read moreme....and ten years is a long time to have been away from what was, on most occasions, a comfort zone. On sunny days, I would walk to church. It lifted my spirit. What a warm place for me to be. St. Matt's is a beautiful church. I was drawn to the music, for sure. I always sat close to the musicians. And there, also, especially when the sun was shining, a white cross appeared in one section of the stained glass that I was facing. I was touched. St. Matt's, however, was a place of contrasts/contradiction for me. Although there were many friendly parishioners, a woman's place in the service, in "leadership", was defined by men. Perhaps it was a generational thing and after all of these years, things have really changed. Healing services were appreciated when I was first introduced to them, but they soon became too influenced by the judgments of men. It seemed to me that women of advanced educational standing and experience were considered a threat, to males and females. Divorced women, although "welcomed into the fold" were slighted. An inscribed gift that I had given to the church library in thanks for kindnesses shown had disappeared completely and had "never been a part of the inventory." A place of contradiction, in my mind...One day I will return. I long to feel the presence, especially when that small white cross is shining in the stained glass.

I can understand why they are in full communion with the Presbyterian Church USA and others. If I was living in this town, I would not hesitate to attend here. The church seems friendly, it is jam packed with people. The Pastor is friendly and inviting and down to earth. I think this was very refreshing to see. If you are out in this area, and you are looking for a mainline church to go to, even those that are not Lutheran, but perhaps Anglican or Episcopal or PCUSA or PCA, this would be a great choice!

This persisted throughout the service whenever music was played. One should not have to subject oneself to permanent hearing loss when going to church. As we waited for the service to begin, Pastor Joshua stopped by to introduce himself and talk about the Church/Service. We enjoyed greatly the Worship Music and the morning's message/sermons from Pastor Joshua and his wife Pastor Emily were biblical, passionate and uplifting. From the first day we walked into the way church, we have felt welcome and friendly like a home. Every Sunday morning, we always have fun at the way church. We love pastor Josh and Emily, and their two adorable children. We also made a lot of great friends there. After 2-year effort, we have had our first kid. I believe our daughter is the gift from God, she is the answer of our prayers at the way church. She will be growing with the Way Church together, she has so many lovely cousins, uncles/aunts as well as grandparents at church watching her growing, how wonderful it is! The most beautiful thing is she is looked after by God. I highly recommend the Way Church to anyone who is looking for a great church!

They are about 200 people in worship so the church is large enough to offer a wide array of programs and small enough to get to know people. Lake Park Lutheran is a small Lutheran church on Milwaukee's east side. It is an Evangelical…read moreLutheran Church of American and is open to all people. (This includes the LGBTA community.) This church has A LOT of babies and small children, but also a decent amount of elderly people as well. It has solar panels on its roof and is a progressive more liberal church than others I have experienced. Let by Pastor David, you can experience Sermons that go beyond teachings of the bible, but community based ideas, international problems and self-awareness. I am not Lutheran, but a good friend is and I have been visiting this church with him on and off for 3 years now.

First off, full disclosure; I am an active member of Lake Park. I believe my review is unbiased as…read moreit can be, but please feel free to challenge me. Lake Park is a medium urban congregation. The community is open and friendly to newcomers, without being overly so. If you are a new face in the service, expect a few people to say hello and introduce themselves. You will not feel overwhelmed by everybody in the sanctuary coming to get your vital statistics. Lake Park is Reconciling in Christ Church, which means the LGBT community id a full part of the congregation. For some churches this is just a label, here it is part of the mission. If you grew up unchurched, you will feel comfortable in the service. Everything is laid out in a straight forward manner so you can follow along. If you grew up as a Lutheran like I did, it will be familiar to you, but not quite as you remember it. While it is a liturgical service, don't expect the Lutheran service of your childhood. Parts of the liturgy have been removed from regular rotation; confession and the creed and not done every week. I am sure there is a theological reason for this, I am just not aware of it. Be prepared for active children in the service. Many parents bring their kids with them to worship. While they will not screaming or running up and down the aisles (most of the time); you will know that they are there. There is a nursery available to those who want it; children form 6 months to 6 years are welcome. Many parents feel there children belong in the service with them. My wife and I originally felt this way, but our daughter now goes to the nursery each Sunday. Other peoples kids don't bother me, but my own makes it so I can't concentrate. The staff of the nursery is paid, background checked and all over 18. If there is a reason your child needs you, they will find you. You sign your child in and out so that they are accounted for. The staff is outstanding and always great with the kids. My daughter can be pretty clingy while there, and they handle it great while still paying attention to all the kids that are there.
