This is the local Catholic church in the Kilauea township, a few miles east from the lush resorts…read moreand golf courses of Princeville and Hanalei. A humble place of worship- but quite gorgeous. The modern church architecture is quite unusual with its octagonal shape. Lots of windows and doors all around- very bright and airy. The layout inside is in the form of a star; custom-built clustered wood benches separated by aisles that lead towards an elevated altar in the center, with a custom-made granite pulpit and an open tabernacle. Most distinctly, there are wood columns that support the arch structure in the middle, from where, quite appropriately, light streams through skylights right above the altar. If restored property, this church can be a really amazing example of modern island architecture on Kauai. Unfortunately the current state is not very good- there is a need of renovation in the near future. It is clear that St. Catherine parish on Kaua'i, which manages this church, is not very rich. And it is painful to see how thousands of rich people keep coming to Kaua'i, purchase the best properties, build true multi-million dollar palaces everywhere- and never contribute with anything to the local life. And poverty gradually but steadily overtaking the local life. I know I am just a visitor; also I am not perfect myself- so I cannot be too judgmental. But his situation cannot be good. And one day, in the near future, when critical mass is reached, it will most likely backlash against the greedy apathetic hedonists...

Words couldn't describe how beautiful it looked in the perfect,setting with perfect mountain backdrop on a perfect island. Unfortunately, Kauai has grown up around it somewhat but, it's still a treat to visit and imagine the worshipers congregated on a tropical Sunday morning here 100 years ago.

Wish we could have gone inside but we happened by when nobody was around.  The church sits on 17 acres and includes; the mission house/ museum, caretaker cottages, a garage and mission hall. Missionaries arrived to this area in 1834. It's listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1973. Perhaps we will visit the museum on our next visit.

Located on Northern Kauai, this lighthouse and reserve are an amazing and must see location. It is…read morelocated in Kilauea, off the main road through some residential areas. The road dead ends near an overlook with tight parking, but you can see out and down to the ocean and the walls are covered with birds of all types. A gate stops you from entering the grounds of the reserve and lighthouse. If you go to recreation.gov you can make reservations to visit, there is usually a fee, but we came on a free day. Past the gate, you drive down a steep drive to a parking area with government buildings. You then walk out to the ranger station, gift shop and lighthouse area. This is a historical location which should be explored. It is also a reserve for animals and you will mostly see the birds and learn about them. You can get your national park stamp and visit the gift shop. Lots to see, and I would add this as a must see on Kauai! You will have to plan ahead to get your reservation.

Located on the northernmost tip of Kauai, Kilauea Lighthouse was built in 1913 and served as a…read morebeacon for traveling ships approaching the island. Nowadays, although outdated and no longer in service, this lighthouse still serves as a popular beacon for tourists visiting one of the most frequently visited attractions on the island. Situated within the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, you'll have to pay admissions in order to enter. We serendipitously showed up on one of the admission-free day without even realizing it, so was only subject to the $1 reservation fee. There are several parking lots after you pay, all of which fill up fast. However, the ranger will direct you where to find available spots. The walk to the lighthouse will treat you to some breathtaking views of the cliffs and water below. And if you're lucky, some nice variety of marine life in addition to the plethora of birds flying around. We happened to see a swimming sea turtle at one point at the cliffs below thanks to the crystal-clear Hawaii waters. And although you can walk right up to the lighthouse to take pictures, entrance into the lighthouse itself is barred as they have suspended tours inside.

There is no real address off Kuhio Highway, so look on the left as you travel north. It's set back off the highway just past the little market that is on the right.
