Lilo Grill House and Juice Bar offers a curious mixture of things that seems to work pretty well. I particularly like the juices, which are concocted with a view to combining the health-giving properties of the ingredients as well as ensuring that they taste delicious. My particular favourite is the carrot, apple, orange and ginger priced at £2.50, but I also like the idea of the tomato, carrot and parsley at the same price, but sadly I'm allergic to tomatoes. It's the idea of having parsley in a juice that appeals, (which is meant to be packed with goodness), but I'm sure they'd add it for me if I asked for it... The only juice that doesn't appeal is the papya (£2.30). I tried in vain to educate my taste buds to appreciate papya when I lived in India as it's meant to be really good for the stomach, and it grows in abundance over there and so is a fraction of what it costs here, but sadly I never got passed the opinion that it tastes like blocked drain water... not nice! The food is good and really well priced. Being Midddle Eastern there's quite a few kebab options on the menu, along with delicious things like humous, falafel and taboula for the vegetarians, and not forgetting the grilled veg options. The prices are really good, the surroundings are very pleasant and the service is excellent. The starters range between £2.00 and £3.00, and the mains start at around £5.00, offering excellent value for money. I recommend some of the mouth watering and unusual starters like Mousil Kubba and Meat Bouraq... delicious! They open at 12.00pm and stay open till 'late'. There's free delivery on take out orders over £10.00.

Stylish sophisticated design has gone into this renovated building with all the care and attention spent in transforming it into a masterful piece of interior design. The private seating gives your table a secluded feel and the service is pleasant and well worth the experience, additionally they are generous with the serving and extras. There is no service charge added, which makes the whole dining that more worth the trip. Food served in what I would imagine is Moroccan style tangine dishes makes the authenticity that more delightfully exciting, especially if you have never experienced this style of cuisine. I would recommend Burj Al Arab to anyone; I look forward to many repeat visits in the future.

It is fitting that there is a business of the same name on City Road. This area of Cardiff has a large Middle Eastern community, with Kurdish traders on the street outnumbering any other nationality. The Burj Al Arab on City Road is not a hotel however. It is a very elegant restaurant and coffee lounge that occupies a large property that looks like it used to be a pub. Unlike so many of the pubs in Cardiff today, this building is beautifully decorated in cream and brick red, with individual black canopies fanning out over the doors and windows. National flags of many of the Arab nations line a lintel that spans the width of the building beneath the upstairs windows. Pride of place is nevertheless reserved for the Welsh national flag that sits alongside a green ensign with an Arabic inscription. The food served here is clearly of Arabic origin, with tagines and couscous being the most dominantly featured items on the menu. Delicious!

This is what I find odd about the city centre end of this fabled street: It somehow looks more dilapidated than the other end of the road, but some of the most lavish eateries, like Cla Zaman and Mirchi, and some of the most renowned and upmarket salons in Cardiff, such as Guy Christian and Coray & Co. are based here. This seems to contradict the appearance of the place, which is a little baffling! Salt N Pepper Grill, as the name would suggest, concentrates its efforts on charcoal grilling a pretty impressive range of kebabs, some of which are vegetarian. They have an 'all you can eat' option for £8.99, offering forty different items to choose from. Students, who get a 10% discount on normal menu prices, can enjoy the 'all you can eat' offer at £6.99. The food is well prepared and the service is good, but I wonder how adversely affected this restaurant is now that Cal Zaman has opened its doors... they're difficult to compete with in terms of scale and luxuriance, and priced similarly they present pretty stiff competition.

Get there early and claim one of the booth tables to have a more secluded dining experience. For larger groups this is an ideal curry place with some fantastic dishes for everyone's taste. The seating is very comfortable, with marble floors and some very attractive interior design it's a restaurant to put on the list.

Adonis is essentially seen as sexy these days... which is hardly surprising considering his union with Aphrodite. So, the fact that this terrible proper Halal takeaway bares his name, makes my smile every time I see it! It's fair to say that City Road is awash with kebab houses these days, all vying for diminishing business, but this is one of the better ones. Not only is it far superior in appearance than some, the quality of the food is streets ahead, placing it in the top bracket for the area... and that's some achievement amid such fierce competition. They are certainly not the cheapest fast food outlet on City Road, but I believe that it is worth paying for quality. I recommend that you dig a little deeper in your pocket the next time you venture onto City Road for a takeout, and give Adonis Kebab House a try. You won't be disappointed. They have recently extended the business to offer eating in as an option. The surroundings are pleasant enough, and the service is good. I recommend any of the lamb options, and the Kofta Kebab.
