I've been a member of this gym for the better part of a decade. Let me paint you a picture of a typical visit... You enter on Diversey Street through two sets of narrow double doors. Someone is always leaving at the exact moment you arrive, and the two of you engage in a polite yet awkward standoff over who will hold the door. One of you finally relents and slips through, and just like that, the first small irritation of the day has landed - forgettable on its own, but the first of many. By the time you leave, they'll have accumulated, and you'll walk out slightly worse off than when you arrived, unsure exactly why. Next comes the card scanner. There is a self-scan device on the counter, and you will try earnestly, hopefully, to get it to work. It rarely does. But not never, and that's the problem. If it never worked, they might be forced to fix it. But because it flickers to life just often enough, they don't. So you stand there, twisting your card around like an idiot, while the staff -who've watched this same futile ritual unfold thousands of times - eventually wheel their chair over and press a button on top. This, too, rarely works on the first try. You both fiddle . Smile nervously. You both pretend it isn't ridiculous. Finally, you're through. Next is the locker-room, which is carpeted- an ideal environment for mold, bacteria, and athletes foot fungus. To reach it, you'll navigate a cramped zigzag chute that I've come to think of as the "butt funnel" - a design that ensures those entering and those exiting will collide in the tightest possible space. Once inside, you're greeted not by open space but by a bench placed directly in the entryway, flanked by lockers. This leaves you weaving through a maze of naked limbs and gym bags just to get in. Then comes the locker hunt. There is no system - no visual indicator of a locker being unused, no light, no logic. You must walk the perimeter, trying each one in sequence. Locked. Locked. Locked. Locked. Locked. Open. By this time, much of your desire to workout, which you had just a brief time ago, has diminishd significantly. Upstairs, unless you've come during workday hours, you'll find the place packed. Not just busy - packed. Every machine is in use, often with someone standing nearby, waiting. You'll find people on the floor, doing pushups or crunches in the narrow spaces between equipment. There's no rhythm, no flow - just bodies everywhere. oh, and forget going late in the evening - they reduced their hours significantly after Covid and then never opened them back up (almost certainly because they realized it increased their profit margin to not have to pay the staff). And the atmosphere - this is harder to define, but you'll feel it. It's not unfriendly exactly, just... off. No one talks. No one makes eye contact. I'm not looking to make friends at the gym, but I can't shake the sense that something in the bones of this place is just wrong. It takes more than it gives and it's hard to put your finger on why. When your workout is over, you descend through the same gauntlet of hell on your way out, a staff member will mumble a required, monotone farewell in your direction without looking up - a forced practice that you know is equally as painful for them as it is you . You'll hold the door for the next person as they awkwardly try to hold it for you. And you'll step back out onto Diversey having completed your workout. Technically, you've gained something - but it won't feel that way. Why, you ask, do I continue to attend this godforsaken place? Because it the only gym in the neighborhood - and I, like so many others around here, don't have a car in Chicago. Therefore I will continue to attend - losing something every time I go. If you have a regular 9-5 job, this place just isn't worth it. It's absolutely packed for any post-work workout. With the exception of treadmills, at best there are only 2 of every machine, and only like 4 weight benches. The place isn't really big enough for more, so you're forced to just stand and wait for anything to become available. I've lived in 3 states and multiple cities, and this gym, while clean, is just not worth the money unless you can workout on weekends or during lunch. On mondays I wouldn't be surprised if it surpasses fire occupancy limits, THAT'S how crowded it is. read more

I parked at LPAC Lincoln Park. They allowed someone to park in front of me WITHOUT leaving their car keys. These people YELLED at me the first time I visited the gym and demanded that I park at a certain spot and leave my car keys. The rules are selectively applied. read more

Just weighing in because I've read lots of negative reviews and I really love this gym. Group fitness classes of all kinds are tough, great workouts that teach you all the important techniques and your strengths and weaknesses. They're also a great antidote to the crowding that lots of reviewers have mentioned if you sign up before they're full. Boo to folks who sign up then don't show up. Big shout-out to amazing instructors like Julie, Jennifer, Peter, Paul, John, Jess, Andrew, Cedric, Jason, Vanessa, Joey, Ann and many others current and former. You're all friendly, professional and a lot of fun, even though I kinda hate you sometimes with how much you always push us. It's not your fault a lot of the equipment is old but you get the best out of it and us. Also have done some personal training sessions at a promo rate with Chad who's been amazing. One upside of the big crowds someone pointed out to me is that they keep membership rates lower than otherwise. I do understand that parking could be a headache but I'm lucky that I live close enough to walk. Sure it would be great to get new lockers but you do find one eventually. Sometimes some fellow members could use to take a locker rather than strewing their stuff about the limited space everywhere. But real estate is always limited. The pool in particular can be tough to find some availability for a lane so I just let that go. I wish there were a way to reserve a lane but I know that would be tough. And please, members, please don't use your phones in the locker room or sauna. That's very awkward. Front desk team is great, everyone keep it up and thanks for your assistance with my fitness journey. See you for body pump in a couple hours. I'd give it 4 stars but for the past few years no actual action has been taken regarding phones/shoes/clothes and electronics aka headphones etc in the sauna/locker room. All the gym does is put up new little signs about not using phones/no outside shoes/phones. Women come into the sauna, plop their dirty shoes on the wooden planks, take out their phone (that pings half the time), sit in their sweaty clothes against the wood and you can hear the music blasting through their headphones. Sauna's are unsanitary due to absolute lack of club enforcement of the rules/sanitation regulations, as well as member's lack of respect for fellow club goers. The purpose if a sauna is to exfoliate and relax - this is not achievable due to the disrespect and egocentrism of fellow club members. I should be able to sit in a sauna naked or in a towel without worrying about sanitation/privacy invasion/loud phones etc. I have seen the club police someone about a phone once in the elliptical room - never in the sauna/locker room. Again people are naked/changing in the locker room. People constantly break the sauna rules and even mention how they don't care about following them. My friends are tired of this as well, so this review is long over due. The club is aware and not doing anything regarding enforcement. There needs to be policing of the sauna/locker room for those breaking privacy/hygiene rules and be warned/then membership revoked if it keeps happening. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

I love this gym and all group classes offered there. The pool is great. I love the Aqua TBT in the summer. The body pump and hard core classes are great. The gym has a big locker room, nice shower area and workout studios. Some classes are so addictive that the groups are getting very crowded. I am a bit surprised by the lower star ratings on this location. As some of us fell into bad eating habits during the quarantine, trying to shed off those extra pounds I put on is definitely a challenge. I finally decided to join a gym, and I am glad I chose this one as I left Equinox. The gym itself is quite big, which is not what one may think upon entry to the club. Susannah allowed me to try the gym before I signed up for it, which helped me make my decision faster. Some pros and cons of the gym. Pros: -Cardio Machine always available, there's lots of them! -Nobody judges you, I don't feel the judgement here that I did at the previous gym I was part of -Areas are secluded according to exercise, cardio vs. strength -Friendly Staff Cons: -Lockers (Male) are a bit smelly, and yes I know, it's a gym! I just think the lockers need some love. -Weigh Room can get packed at certain hours, which is normal to every gym, but it seems that a lot of the members here prefer to lift and neglect the cardio room. I deducted a star because of the locker rooms, lockers are often dirty as well so I find myself cleaning them before putting my stuff in. I do like that they have built in locks. read more

They recently refurbished their weight room and put in astro turf, lifting platforms, and a lot of cross training stuff. They also stopped charing $2 for parking and now its free. Can't beat that. The steam room, sauna and pool are nice to have during the winter. I've definitely been to better clubs, but for $69 a month, i think this club is a great value. read more

LPAC is awesome! Not only does it have all the equipment you need, including machines, free weights, kettlebells, exercise balls, etc, but the amenities are also fantastic! Plus, it's right off the Diversey brown line stop. Towel service is included, but more importantly they have a sauna AND a steam room! I never knew the difference until LPAC, but the steam room has crazy blue and green lights and thick steam with menthol, very rehabilitating after a great workout. There's also a full line of classes included with membership. Although it gets busy, I have never been unable to complete a workout. I would highly recommend going on their free trial. Been a member of the CAC for a little over four years now. I usually move between this gym, lakeview and the now closed Webster Place. Comparatively, LPAC is the second nicest. WPAC was far and away the nicest facility but it closed due to some conflict with the property owner, a huge bummer for me. LPAC is a great gym to visit and has all of the classes the others do, the schedules are posted online. The equipment here is pretty well maintained and clean. The men's locker room tends to get crowded during rush hour times in the afternoons, but if you go a little earlier or later, it's usually just fine. Steam and sauna are available here as well, always a great way to cap off a good workout. Cardio equipment is plentiful here and updated recently. read more

I want to say that I miss going there as I belonged to the Entire group of clubs. At Lincoln Park I loved the valet guys; so nice and trustworthy. Due to the Pandemic I had to put my plans on hold. Since I have a child abd lacked child care was looking forward to starting in January then Omnicron hit and CPS closed. I called to extend my hold offering to even pay the hold fee. They were sooo nice and gave me a two months hold no charge! I know health clubs have been hit hard and this one has been more than accommodating throughout the Pandemic. After tortuously exploring horrifically overpriced gyms with awful parking situations throughout the great Chicago, I settled on Chicago Athletic Clubs because the girlfriend hated our XSport membership since the class options suck and because of the fact that the XSport on Broadway DOESN'T HAVE DEAD LIFT AREAS OR BUMPER/ROLLER PLATES. WTF? It's 2019 XSport! By the way, you can use your membership at any of the CAC locations--pretty neat! Originally, I went to the Lakeview Athletic Club, which only has 2 dead-lift areas and a significantly smaller "all-purpose" gym area, but I lost my patience when the meter-maid gave me a $60 parking ticket for a non-compliant front plate. What the hell, man? Who gives you a ticket for not having a front plate? Furthermore, I discovered that the Lincoln Park location has a free parking lot, unlike Lakeview, in one of the busiest places in Chicago! Can you say, hallelujah? I can! At any rate, as a guy who enjoys lifting heavy weights, Lincoln Park Athletic Club is perfect because there is hardly ever a shortage of equipment during extremely busy times such as Monday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. Everyone and their mother is working out chest on Monday and I still manage to get a great Chest pump in! The class options are also great--to name a few there are Body Pump classes, Cycling options, and Yoga options. For the workout nerds: there are 4 functional trainer cable machines, you know the one that Instagram models use to workout their butts and do those useless kickbacks (jk, just making fun of non-squatters/dead-lifters). And there are 2 sides to each machine so that is 8 spots to workout there. There is also another larger all purpose cable/row/pull-up/pull-down machine as you see at many gyms. The dumbbells go all the way up to 110 lbs, so most people aren't going to have an issue with heavy weights. However, at the rate I'm gaining strength due to this gym, they may need to get 115 and 120 pounders soon (pounder isn't even a word but you know what I mean). There are 4 squat racks and 3 dead-lift areas. However, I see people doing dead-lifts on the main floor all the time when the dead-lift areas are unavailable. There are at least 3 leg-presses and a hella amount of kettle bells. One of the few drawbacks that I can think of is the poor lighting in the dumbbell and dead lift areas. Owners--if you are reading this and decide to install some elite lighting so everyone looks as chiseled as can be, I'll change my review to 5 stars. This is a must for any gym! I mean, come on! The second drawback is the abnormally high height of the adjustable benches in the dumbbell area, it's like they are made for the family of Shaquille O'neal! But I deal anyway because of all the other perks. Also, don't listen to these contract noobs who can't read fine print. The contract clearly says that your membership renews month-to-month after the 12 months and you need to provide at least 30 days notice to cancel otherwise. This is a wonderful neighborhood club and much different than many competitors. Instead of building a fitness mega-ganza the owner chose to fit a state-of-the-art health club into an intimate space. Walking into the reception area I was greeted with warmth and smiles. The comfort was extended as many members can be seen enjoying their well-earned leisure in the comfortable lobby setting. The feel of the place took me back to the old Chicago Athletic Club. The class I attended was called burn. I loved the team approach as we were schooled and cheered on by our leader and divided into pump it up groups. I cannot wait to go back!! read more

DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM. First of all, FFC is MUCH better. Second of all, twice now I have attempted to cancel my membership with LPAC and they have continued to charge my account -- and at varying fees. It has been the biggest nightmare and I know they've recently been sued for canceling their rewards program without identifying members, which only goes to show you that they're not running this business well. Take it from me -- I recently moved to a new city but before I did, I was a member at FFC, which was not only a MUCH better gym, but they made the cancelation process so easy and even asked for my input on how they can improve for existing and new members -- by far the better option. Plus, they have free parking for the first two hours at their Lincoln Park location, the gym is much larger, the equipment in better shape, fewer temperature control issues, and the locker rooms are much nicer. read more

It's a lovely club, I am a member. Only giving low stars in the hopes someone will see this... and will be up until it changes. I believe an employ uses the handicapped ramp area as a personal parking spot. Every day the same Jeep is in the hatched area by the handicapped accessible space (been so for over a year), which is intended to provide ramp access to side loading vans for wheelchairs (ADA compliance). Maybe nobody ever complains, but it's bad optics, especially because it's highly visible and so many civil engineers and handicapped folks walk by. Update: Did you really remove the handicap parking? This is part of your permit approval process and is probably a violation of city ordinances and the Americans With Disabilities Act. read more

Trixie, meet Chad. Chad, meet Trixie. Now that we have introductions out of the way, let's allow Lincoln Park Chads and Trixies to workout in one big gym. I've never seen so much Lululemon and Under Armour in one place. So many blondish girls with ponytails in scrunchies, so many guys aiming to keep their former frat bro bodies intact for a few more years. Lotsa eye candy popping, spinning, churning and burning. So, LPAC...not much competition in the surrounding neighborhood, is there? Yeah, it shows. Several broken treadmills, packed Men's locker rooms, cardio equipment stuffed so close together that you'll feel your neighbor's machine vibration from their treadmill pounding. CACs have a tendency to pack a lot of machines into their converted warehouse spaces, and LPAC is no exception. Upright bikes are tucked into one corner...the recumbents are tucked away in another. A few more uprights are stuck by the ONE small staircase that we're all supposed to use to get to & from the cardio room. Is that a fire hazard? Who cares. I'm still looking at the eye candy banging the elliptical in front of me. I suppose the other areas in the gym are nice. The pool seems small. Actually, everything is proportioned inadequately for the huge number of members that pack LPAC weekday evenings. I can't vouch for the ladies, but the men's locker room--which should be a cool-down kinda vibe--is steamy, warm and uncomfortable. And Chads, would it kill ya to pick up your towels after using them instead of throwing them all over the locker room floor? read more

This is the best of the CACs I have been to out of LPAC, Lakeview, and Bucktown. They have good amenities, but they don't seem to care about the members. It's crowded, but overall a pretty good gym. I wish they still had the basketball court. read more

I've been a member now for over a year and I could not be happier. I love swimming and they have a gorgeous pool with a nice little hot tub that soothes my aches. Super clean bathrooms and amazing cheerful staff. I wish I took more time to use their sauna and steam room. I've lost over 30 lbs due to using this gym. Location off the brown line is great. Also, while their initial parking lot is on the small side, their overflow parking at a nearby church is CLUTCH. And when I've worked out on land, I've always had easy access to elliptical and free weights. read more

I became a member about 2 years ago and decided that I no longer wanted to stay a member because they closed their Kids Club. I do not have a problem with the facility, but I will tell you that they have awful customer service. If you contact them about joining, you will get a response within hours. If you contact them about your account and wanting to cancel, you'll be lucky if you get any response. I have been trying to cancel my account for weeks and cannot get a response. I also have unused personal training funds that they will not refund (which is ok and I'm sure written somewhere in the contract), however, they will not let me know how much is in that account and I have no way to access it to figure it out on my own. Oh and when I was training with a personal trainer, he would cancel on me sometimes just an hour or 2 before we were set to meet. I would not recommend this gym to anyone due to their customer service. read more

I've been working out at LPAC for the past three months and it has by far exceeded my expectations. They have flexible membership options and it was a very easy process to join. Their locker rooms were recently renovated and get the job done. You also don't need a lock as they're built into the lockers. The cardio area isn't anything crazy, just your place to get it done. There's a lot of machines and usually you're able to grab one, but the area isn't anything crazy. The weights area however is fantastic. Very large open space full of a large variety of weights. Even if it's packed at the gym, they'll be space to lift. Pro Tip - take advantage of their rewards program by downloading the app. It's super easy to get free gear with your points. read more

This is a pretty decent gym for the area. I chose to sign up because it is a 2-minute walk from my front doorstep so...NO EXCUSES! I'm a no-frills low-maintenance gym-goer and classes bore me so they don't concern me. However, there are definitely things that need to be addressed here: (1) Temperature control: it always seems to be too hot or too cold. (2) Policing: I'm not saying you need to stand over people Planet Fitness-style, but some members will literally SLAM weights over and over again (it's too heavy for you, Chad) without any intervention from the surrounding trainers. It's obnoxious and annoying. (3) Space: cardio room is cramped as are parts of the gym designated for floor exercises. (4) Equipment: this place would seriously benefit from more abdominal weight machines (!!!!) as well as benches for free weights. Other than that, this place is fine for the money and the convenience. I would never pay for Equinox unless I had no idea what else to do with my money so I think this a great second-best option for the area. read more

The contract for this gym is ridiculous!!! If you want to cancel your membership AFTER your commitment ends you have to give a 30 day notice. A WRITTEN 30 day notice. If you are a few days late, too bad so sad, you end up paying for an extra month anyway. Both the gym representatives and the "We are only the billing company" representatives are not helpful or empathetic in any way. They don't even send out an email advising members that their membership is coming to an end and that a notice would be needed for cancelation. They also Do Not emphasis this when you sign up. Perhaps this is my fault for not memorizing the contract. Silly me. LPACs customer service in this is exactly the reason I HATE GYMs. read more

Last time I was at LPAC, I had a cast on my arm and only could use the cardio equipment and the pool area. Recently, I had returned to the property and was greeted by the friendly staff. The locker rooms were almost complete due to locker renovations - no longer will you need to bring a lock. Overall, the work out facility is great. The building is very well laid out and the space is very well designed. There are plenty of space for cardio. The machine area and the weight room was smaller than I thought it would be, however, there were plenty of machines and free weights. Overall, I am looking forward to return on an open Thursday, where members can go to another club. I did enjoy this gym. read more

I'm a fan overall. Clean gym. Wipes and towels. Showers and shampoo. The Athletic Clubs have "Weekend Workout Forums" which are hour workout sessions with their trainers and it varies every week. The trainers are always friendly and helpful. Shout out to Zoe cause I'm a fan of her classes. Big positives: -Outdoor Rock Climbing wall with intro climb classes. Perfect for someone like me who isn't committed enough to be certified but just want to climb every once in a while. -Pool + Hot tub -Sauna + Steam room -Variety of classes -They have a point rewards system. If you accumulate enough points, you can earn and pick rewards. A free month of membership being one of them! Love this since I've gotten a couple months for free. read more

Quite nice, very crowded, tho half of the lakeview members are going there now and I went during rush hour. They did accommodate the amount of members with lots of space and more equipments which I thought was nice. Out of the ones I've been to, (bucktown, lakeview, webster) this one definitely has the muscular members lol just observations, irrelevant to rating but I mean this gym produce results. Kind of do get you motivated seeing people training hard. They also have the most equipment varieties and quantities. Tho I wonder, is it me or do they not have hack squat machine? That whole area between the benches and squat/deadlift station is a bit absurd imo. It's like trying to stretch in the middle of everyone's workout. Tho it does provide some good "breathing" room for the space. I wouldn't breathe too hard tho lol Seriously tho... now that I've visited some of CAC's other locations... wtf is lakeview doing, thought it's supposed to be the best out of all the locations... equipments are not as up to date and definitely the least amount of equipments out of all the CAC locations :/ ... maybe except wicker park lol that one's tiny read more

Echoing Ron's review from 6 months ago. I am a member here and any time I come in I notice an employee's Gray Jeep parked in the handicap ramp loading zone. It's really disappointing that after all this time they are still continuing to park here (and management continues to allow it). They park here even when there are available spots. I don't want to bring it up in person and be awkward but it really is shameful. Just because the one handicap spot with a loading zone at a gym may be empty a lot of the time, it doesn't make it ok. They're not parking in the handicap spot because they obviously know it's wrong, but it's just as bad to park in the loading zone. read more

Love this gym. They run 72 workout classes each week for free. Yoga, HIIT, spin, lift, and more. It's clean. Has a sauna, steam room in the men's locker room. Shared space houses the pool and hot tub. Hot tub is good not great. Pool is great. Has a true deep end 10 feet. Cardio room. HUGE gym with grass like carpet floor so it makes it feel like somewhat of s green space substitute. Towel service for free. Manduka yoga mats. Free parking for 2 hours. Climbing wall! For the price- this is a great gym! All of the machines/equipment you would want, great classes which are included (I recommend Michael`s Total Body Training Classes, Linda's Studio Strength Class, Megan's TRX Class, and then BURN if you like Orange Theory!). The place is always clean, and they have an app which you can use to check into the gym so you don't need to always bring your keytag. They have towels & lockers for those who like to shower there. They also have a rock climbing wall which is awesome and they offer both intro climbs and more advanced for those who want to get certified and climb solo! The downsides: -Products aren't nearly as nice for showering as Equinox (you are also paying half as much though) -Going after work from 5-7 it is hard to find a cardio machine -You can't reserve classes on the app, you need to go within an hour ahead of time and write your name on the list (that being said, you can normally get a spot in a class if you show up 15-20 minutes in advance!)
