The summary here is I had a tremendously positive experience working with Lindeblad on the complete restoration of my 1929 Kurtzmann Grand Piano, and the outcome is fantastic. Craftsmanship is excellent. Tone and sound quality also excellent. Customer experience throughout is first class and I was treated exceptionally. Turnaround time exceeded expectations. Can't speak for other pianos, but I expected this restoration to take 6-8 months--Lindeblad had it back to me completed in 5. If you're restoring a high quality piano, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Lindeblad. It's the right call. More details: I decided I wanted to restore this piano I'd inherited from my father, because of its history with my family and its many emotional connections. So I did what any modern human would do: I Googled restoration shops. I had seen Lindeblad, but being in Southern California, I had reservations about shipping my piano across the country to New Jersey, so I originally chose to work with a restoration shop close to home, a place in Orange called Piano Artisans. Piano Artisans charged me a $2500 retainer fee and put me in queue, quoting an attractive price saying they'd start in 9-12 months. When I reached out to Piano Artisans at the 9 month mark they said they were now quoting 12-18 months. At month 13, I canceled with Piano Artisans and they refused to refund the retainer despite never having done an ounce of work toward the piano. I have since learned that this is not an uncommon practice in the piano restoration space, with some shops keeping you on the hook for 2-3 years before starting work. I feel this is an unfriendly way to treat customers. If you are evaluating piano restoration shops, I would urge you not to reward this business model of being held hostage by a vendor for an indefinite amount of time. I ultimately called Lindeblad and what a dramatic difference! Lindeblad has made the investments required to be able to manage timelines and give their customers a great experience. Logistics are handled in house, restoration all in house, refinishing all in house, this gives them solid operational control and the ability to hold their teams to really high standards. Their business model affords them the ability to do this, and their employees seem happy and come to work with enthusiasm. I first spoke with Matt Witte, who handles logistics, and between a few zoom meetings with Matt and Todd Lindeblad I was greatly reassured and felt very comfortable that we could get my piano there and back safely and on a reasonable time table. Once we got the piano there, Todd sent video evaluations of what work needed to be done and we reviewed a quote which was firm, and was exactly what I paid in the end. Yes, this price was higher than the other shop, but for a well defined and committed time table, and for a first class experience, this was 100% worth it. They kept their word on the timetable and started work soon after we signed and made our first payment. During the restoration process I received email communications and updates from Sean Lindeblad, who handles the customer experience. I was originally planning to fly out to the Lindeblad shop once the restoration was finished, but my job got in the way and I couldn't make the travel work. Sean instead sent me pictures of the piano and a video of someone playing it so I could hear it. I was overjoyed to see and hear those results. A couple of weeks later it was flawlessly delivered back to my home. The piano itself is amazing and has exceeded expectations. The work is immaculate, and it's really a brand new instrument. When I'm dead and gone, this piano will be something my children fight over. :) My mom (91) had some emotional moments in seeing it completed, as the restoration was something my dad had always wanted to do before he passed, but didn't get the chance. Lindeblad is a family business and it sure shows. Everyone involved in our restoration -- Todd Lindeblad, his father, Robert -- was personable and responsive. They picked up our 1921 Baldwin in California and shipped it to New Jersey. We had a complete overhaul of the mechanics, new strings etc. It sounds great. Two years later, we decided to have a midi unit installed, which allows us to play and record digitally (with headphones) (my wife and I produce music). Amazing company doing outstanding piano restoration. 4-5 years ago we bought a recent Boston baby grand (made by Steinway). Now I had my doubts about buying a $15,000 piano sight unseen but it turned out beyond our expectations. No charge for delivery from New Jersey to Northern VA and the logistics went without a hitch. Incredible piano by the way. Phase two. Moved to Ohio with no room for a baby grand so Lindeblad picked up up the Boston and gave us credit for the full purchase price towards a different piano. Phase three. After talking with Paul and Todd Lindeblad a number of times we decided on a 1914 M Class Steinway concert upright. Again, sight unseen. There was a little glitch when Paul called to say that they had restored a V class instead of the M class. The V class is slightly shorter with shorter strings. BUT, he offered to go ahead and deliver the shorter one with the promise that they would begin restoring the M class and we could exchange if we wanted. Phase four. The V class Steinway was delivered after impecible delivery coordination and was beautiful and sounded amazing. After several days the piano player in our family said, I love it but, this is the last piano I will own and I want the best, the M class. So, after several weeks that was made ready and the same professional (this is all they do) movers showed up to make the swap. Of course, this was an upgrade so we paid the difference between our trade in and the price of the Steinway. Phase five. All is well that ends well. My wife loves the "new" piano, circa 1914 and almost could not stop playng it over the weekend. You would not believe how it looks inside and out; like brandnew. Paul called several times to see how she like it. These guys really love what they do and that carrys over to the benefit of the customers. For eight years this piano lived in our little theater in upstate New York. It had come from one of the first TV studios in the US, WRGB, which was originally owned by GE. A main feature of several early musical programs, this 1938 Steinway had originally been black, but was painted blue, then red, then white, and then black again. I confess even I applied some black paint when blobs of white paint revealed itself was the black peeled. Upon receiving the piano, Paul Lindeblad sent me videos of issues that he believed we should correct within the 81 year old instrument -- felts, hammers, bushings. We agreed upon the work that needed to be done. They tell me this was possibly the toughest refinishing project they've done. Within a couple of months of our sending them our big ugly piano (which always had a beautiful sound), a new, beautiful instrument, with some new parts inside, was delivered to our home. We visited the piano shortly before that, in the Lindeblad factory. We were a bit early, and the staff scurried around to get the instrument ready for us to see it, presented in a staging area with powerful lights that revealed its new beauty. Everyone at Lindeblad was polite, enthusiastic, and justifiably proud of their work. It's tough to trust strangers with an instrument of such value. I'm happy we did. read more

I was very nervous about entrusting my beloved piano to such work, but the piano was on its last legs, and since I am a professional pianist, I had to have it repaired. First, I apologize that this is such a long review, but once you get to the end you'll see why it needed to be - you'll be glad you read on to find how a home burglary led me to Lindeblad Pianos. I'll bet that piqued your attention! Being the victim of a burglary is upsetting enough, but I was crushed to come home from vacation to find my New York Steinway Model B semi-concert grand piano had also sustained many thousands of dollars in damage during the burglary. I spent hours searching up and down the eastern United States for a company that had the necessary expertise to work on such a high-end instrument, and had a reputation I could trust. And then, finally, I found Lindeblad Piano. Lindeblad Piano was hands down the most responsive and attentive piano restoration company I'd made enquiries with. I received a phone call from Todd Lindeblad less than 30 minutes after I sent my first email asking for help. Todd listened attentively, explained my options, answered my questions plainly and honestly, and reassured me they could address my needs. I drove from Philadelphia, PA, to their showroom in Pine Brook, NJ, to see their pianos for myself and to judge the quality of their work - and I am not your typical piano customer. I've been playing the piano for 37 years, and during my twenties I spent 7 years working as an apprentice piano tuner and technician for a fourth-generation piano restoration company in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I know what good piano restoration looks like, and I'm very, very fussy. Although I certainly have the skills, and I suppose I could have repaired my Steinway myself, I've long-since moved on to another career and I don't have the facilities, the tools, or the time to take on a piano of this caliber at this point in my life. And I'll be honest, I really didn't expect to be all that impressed when I drove into the Lindeblad parking lot - it takes a great deal to make me say "wow!" about a piano restoration, and up to that point I'd been far less than impressed with any other piano company. Todd clearly had prepared for my arrival. As soon as I walked through the door I was greeted by Lindeblad staff who recognized my Pennsylvania license plates and knew exactly who I was, greeting me by name as I walked through the door. After being offered a cappuccino I was taken into the showroom and left to privately browse their extensive selection of Steinways - every model of grand piano that Steinway ever made was on that showroom floor ranging in age from the late 19th century to the 21st century - shimmering wood finishes, gleaming hardware, some factory original, some restored - all looked new as though they'd just left the Steinway factory and had just been uncrated. But what really distinguishes a piano repair from a true restoration is sitting down to play at the keyboard. The beautifully-finished piano cabinets aside it was the thrill of playing those pianos that knocked my socks off - I'd been "wowed!" The quality of the work done to each instrument was flawless, one piano after the next. I spent nearly 4 hours carefully lifting each lid and peering into every piano on their showroom floor, looking for poor hammer alignment, running scales up and down keyboards looking for uneven regulation of the actions, for poor hammer voicing, for even one out-of-tune piano - nothing!! An entire showroom of Steinways, and not one that was less than a flawless instrument in every regard. How was it possible? Well, if you're a LIndeblad I've learned, it's a way of life. They profess to live and work by the highest moral and ethical standards and it shows in every Lindeblad piano I've ever seen. In the end, I fell in love with a 1965 Hamburg Steinway Model B that surpassed my New York Steinway B particularly in the musicality of the instrument and in overall condition of the case and action. I hadn't driven to Pine Brook, NJ, to buy a piano that day, but that's exactly what happened. Todd gave me a fair value for my piano in trade and within a week my Hamburg Steinway was delivered to my home free of charge. But the story doesn't end here: the 50-year-old finish on the lid of my Hamburg Steinway developed problems after it was delivered. Todd and his father Paul promised they'd make it right, but I wasn't expecting how far they'd go to do it. A few days later they delivered a loaner piano, picked up my Hamburg Steinway, and returned it to their workshop. But they didn't repair the finish on the lid - they refinished the entire piano - and returned it to me a few weeks later! No question, no push-back, no hesitation. I was "wowed!" for a second time! I couldn't be happier with both the piano and the experience I had working with Todd and the Lindeblad family. Todd is honest, easy to work with, and highly ethical in his work. We recently purchased a 1913 Hamburg Steinway O from Lindeblad Piano. We not only were able to purchase a wonderful instrument, but also walked away with the "best buying experience ever." From the initial extended dialogue with Todd over email, to speaking with Paul about the exact sound we were looking for, to the delivery process and setup of the first free tuning, I always felt I was treated like I was the only customer they had. My wife and I have been considering making a more serious investment on a new piano to replace our $500 Casio Digital Piano. Our friends had recommended getting a Yamaha C3 (Made in Japan) given its popularity and relative consistency in quality. I started to scour through the internet on eBay and Craigs List. In dealing with some of the sellers I felt as if I was buying a used car, so unsure about the difference between original vs. restored vs. rebuilt. I was sure I was likely going to end up spending a lot of money and realize later that I overpayed for something I didn't understand how to differentiate. But thankfully I ran into Lindeblad Piano online. The website was so informative on the benefits and process for purchasing a rebuild that I wanted to find out more. I sent an initial email and within 10 minutes I received a response back from Todd. It would take 12 weeks but we would have 30 days to return no questions asked if we didn't like the sound. For me it was a win-win proposition and believe it or not, we put in a deposit for the 1920 M at the end of that first day I initiated contact. The next day, we had a surprise treat for us from Lindeblad Piano come in over the mail thanking us for choosing them. I won't spoil it, but it was completely unexpected but spoke to the immaculate attention to detail on every aspect of the experience. As part of the process, my wife and I decided to take a trip to the showroom given we live in Jersey to figure out what kind of sound and action we'd enjoy. After playing over 10 of the pianos we kept on coming back to the Hamburg O. The piano just sounded beautiful with many of the high notes bell-like. But the O was significantly higher than the 1920 M and was much more than we wanted to pay. We told Paul we wanted him to be able to replicate the Hamburg O sound onto the 1920 M. He quickly told me that it would be a very difficult task given they were two very different pianos being of different sizes and from two different factories of Hamburg vs. New York. But if my heart was set on the O they could try to make it work for us. After some discussion, they gave us a wonderful deal we couldn't pass up. The piano came in two days ago. It looks like a new piano (though it's over 100 years old) and sounds even better than at the showroom. I'm sure we will own this piano for many years to come and will definitely become a family heirloom. In a few weeks, the tuner Dan Buchanan who used to work for Steinway will do our first complementary tuning courtesy of Lindeblad. All in all, I've probably sent over 40 emails and had numerous calls with Todd and Paul and not once I felt pressured or uncomfortable throughout the process. They even dug up the fascinating story of how this piano was purchased in 1970 by a professional opera singer who took this piano around the world for nearly 30 years. In my search for the perfect piano it was critically important that I find a business that: 1. Restores Steinways - not just a few now and then but a major part of their work and I wanted someone who knew what he or she was doing. 2. Has been in business for a long time and Better Business Bureau approved. I wanted experience and peace of mind. 3. Stands behind ALL their work - not just certain aspects - with a solid warranty. 4. Pleasant to work with and accessible. If I have a problem I want to ensure I can get a hold of someone and frankly, someone who appreciates my business. 5. That could refute my reconnaissance. I spent about 6-8 months of investigating piano retailers and restorers. I also spent a half day at a Steinway dealer in Boston to hear their argument of why I should not buy a restored piano. Of course I expected a hard sell for a new piano (with only a 5 year warranty mind you) but some of their points and literature were compelling. Aside from using the proper parts, they said that setting the bridge height is the most difficult and requires the elite expertise of a Steinway restoration technician. When I asked if I had a Steinway that I wanted restored, they said only the Steinway factory was qualified to restore a Steinway. Ultimately, I found that Lindeblad met and exceeded expectations. To my aforementioned points: 1. Of the 120+ pianos restored last year, more 75% were Steinways 2. A family-owned business for 80+ years with a BBB rating of A+ 3. A 20 year warranty was better than I expected 4. I cannot say enough about the end-to-end process of Lindeblad. From the sale, planning, restoration process, to the photos of the finished product and delivery, they wanted to make sure I was completely happy - not just satisfied - with everything. Three years ago, we purchased a beautifully restored 1936 Mason & Hamlin piano from Lindeblad. It was praised by musician friends of ours and by many of the artists from the nearby Glimmerglass Festival who played it when they were our guests. When our home was completely destroyed by fire in August 2015 and we lost that splendid instrument, we turned immediately to Lindeblad. Mirroring our first experience with Lindeblad, the restoration of this piano was done expertly and meticulously with exceptional artistry and attention to its integrity as a product of the grand era of Mason & Hamlin. We visited the site in New Jersey where they do the restorations and observed the staff of experienced technicians and craftsmen, many of them members of the Lindeblad family, at work. It was very impressive. Like so many victims of such losses, we ended up facing challenges in the the claims process. The people at Lindeblad were most understanding and helpful. I sincerely hope that we will not have to buy another piano, certainly not because of such an event, but it we do, we will once again turn to them right away to help restore music to our home. I purchased a vintage Model A Steinway from Lindeblad. The experience from beginning to end was seamless and professional. Todd, Paul, Dave, Robert, and the rest of the team are the most courteous, friendly, and fastidious professionals I have ever dealt with. There was never any pressure, and I instinctively knew I could trust them. They communicated exactly what they were going to do, and checked with me beforehand, then kept me updated on the progress of the piano. The piano turned out better than I expected, and Paul did an amazing job voicing it. I have taken piano lessons for 25 years and played on many grand pianos, and my Model A is hands-down the nicest piano I've ever played. Since I live in Canada, I was a little concerned about the shipping, but the movers and customs broker were excellent to deal with. The movers even told me that Paul gets down on his hands and knees and personally inspects every inch of every piano that leaves his shop. Overall, I had a great experience with Lindeblad, and now I have an heirloom that will bring me years of happiness. I would recommend Lindeblad without any hesitation whatsoever. read more
