Dr. Bouwens listened to what I had to say, offered me good advice, and was genuinely concerned for my well-being. I have been to many Drs. since then but my older brother stayed with him driving a couple hours each way to see that Dr. until he retired well into his 80s. He was a kind, gentle, caring man that listened to his patience. Dr. Byington has a similar manner. He isn't Dr. House or some other know-it-all Dr. but he listens and cares and has referred me to a number of specialists who focus on the specific issues. When I wasn't satisfied with the care of a specialist, he found me another who was more proactive. This has happened on a couple occasions. I once had a Dr. who also did clinical research. After going to him for a few years he came in to see me for an appointment and said, "So, are you a new patient?" telling me he didn't have a clue about me and he hadn't looked at the chart to see that he had seen me for a few years. That was my last appointment with that Dr. I have been with Dr. Byington for a decade or two (I really don't know how long) and I appreciate him for listening, kindness, and putting up with me for all these years. As with anything, you are the expert on your own body and need to do your best to take care of it but having a Dr. who will actually take the time to listen, refer you to the experts/specialists when necessary, and advocate on your behalf is also a part of good care.
