"Fred Korematsu Speaks Up" wasn't from here. I borrowed it from the local library. By Laura Atkins & Stan Yogi, the book explains the events leading to Fred Korematsu being awarded the Presidents Medal of Freedom in '98 by Pres. Bill Clinton. The seeds of anti-Asian animus was planted when white miners objected to Chinese migrants mining gold in Ca. During the gold rush. It culminated in Executive Order #9066 by F.D.R. ordering the evacuation of all Japanese aliens & Japanese Americans from the west coast. Fred Korematsu did not evacuate. He Was arrested. The A.C.L.U. Defended him up to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled in Korematsu vs. U.S. that it was a "military necessity" for him & Japanese Americans to be evacuated, that no civil rights were violated. In 1983 Jeremy Irons & researcher Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga found evidence in the National Archive to warrant an hearing. With Fred's consent, an appeal was made. The writ of coram nobis was granted, overturning Fred's conviction. The writ revealed that government lawyers had suppressed evidence that the Japanese Americans posed no threat, that they were loyal citizens. Jan. 30th is celebrated as Fred Korematsu Day. *May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Hoover ignored Negros during the great depression, they backed FDR in 1932 for president. -Negros became integrated into the military during WW2 after performing very well in some military actions. -post WW2, Negro equality was resisted in the South: *started by White Citizens' Council **aided by US Supreme Court ruling cases favorably for the South. **economic reprisals against whites & Negros who favored integration. -closing public integrated schools, opening private segregated schools supported by public funds -defunding Negro-improvement organizations (NAACP, Urban League) and prohibiting them from lending legal services in segregation cases. -violence against individual Negros and/or neighborhoods. -since the 1950's, sit-ins, freedom rides, nonviolent anti-segregation protests etc. evolved actions paving a path for equality for Negros.

There was more dirt than flowers and vegetables to be seen, but beautiful nonetheless with an interesting history to go along with the creation of the garden, a result of the dedication and determination of neighborhood residents who also maintain the planter beds. Inside the serene space, there's a shipping container showcasing a vibrant and colorful mural (City Life Oasis) by Michael Rios, as well as a massive manila village mural on the building across the street. Also within the garden, a bit of seating can be found available for community members and visitors to enjoy the carefree atmosphere and growing plants all around.

I have three boxes that I am currently using what they called victory garden project, following along those same guidelines. Right now I have corn, tomatoes, strawberries growing. But when you go you will find a variety of different types of vegetables growing all maintained by the residents. A shout out to TODCO maintenance man Van. He does a bang up job on taking care of the small things that need be worked on over there.

The inside wall is a mirror which gives it such a cool effect Open up for lots of treasures, cute stuff. I found socks, ton of beaded bracelets, stickers, toys, even smaller pull out drawers for SMALL trinkets. Pretty nicely organized! Big thanks for the owner for setting this up for everyone. As I was checking it out, an older gentleman walking by asked me what this box was and I was happy to explain it to him. Fascinating and lovely isn't it?

I think what made this library so special to me was browsing through a section on maps and urban planning and suddenly turning around to find a whole area of books on Detroit. *heart* What a surprise. It's nice to see someone on the west coast care about poor old Detroit. :) Definitely coming here again.

They also have most issues of Punk Planet, which started in 1994, in their music/punk section. I could spend hours just reading those. I also found a book that spent almost 200 pages exploring why people eat dirt. Get lost in this place and just have fun exploring!

We attended the Mutant Zoo event this past Saturday, a fundraiser for the Flaming Lotus Girls art collective and Heavy Petting Zoo (burning man art car). I saw a note about relocation happening soon, so I'm glad we got to experience this lively event over the weekend. We were able to explore the sculptures and interactive displays throughout the venue including some inside the repurposed art-covered shipping containers. No surprise, a good amount of fire was used during this event, whether by a performer entertaining the crowd or activated by guests engaging with the amazing projects on site. We even got to climb on top of shipping containers with seating areas for lounging from above, enjoying views of the water in the distance and sipping on cocktails while vibing to the music and atmosphere. It was a pleasure to check this place out.

LTL is similar to Little Free Libraries in that books works on an honor system to exchange books.... thru a collaboration with writer's & publishers, Stephen & Ayesha Curry"s LTL are distributing free new books to young adults. many new locations have been announced, mostly near elementary schools. read: "Black Brother Black Brother" by Jewell Parker Rhodes -Donte (black tone skin) and Trey (whiter toned skin) are bi-racical siblings in a bi-racial family. Donte is undercoming harrassment by older, white classmates, especially by Alan, the leader of the school's fencing team. non athlete Donte is challenged by Alan, the class bully to a duel. with solidarity from his brother, friends and a black fencing coach, Donte & associates defeats Alan & his mates to win their respect and a place on the new integrated fencing team. the inspiration for Rhodes' books comes from historical facts. the black fencing coach was a former competitive fencer, is modeled after Alex Dumas, a black general in Napolean's Army.
