If I could give this two-and-a-half stars I would as I was frankly a bit disappointed with our…read moreorder last night. Tired and not finding any vouchers for the churn shop pizzas, I decided to call up Pizzaland, which used to be great. When you 're spending $17 to $22 dollars on a big, fat pizza you want a good one, as on a good day you can pick up the cheapies for around 7 or 8 dollars (I prefer the big 'Aussie' solid numbers but the kids like the mass made varieties from the pizza chain stores). I say 'Aussie' because you don't get three centimetre high toppings in Italy, that's for sure. We waited 45 minutes for our order, which seemed like a long time on a Wednesday night, but that was OK; what was disappointing was that although the pizzas looked really excellent only one of the three we ordered measured up taste-wise. The seafood pizza was probably not one we'd regularly order, but we found it bland unfortunately, as we did the Mediterranean, which just lacked a certain something. We probably will try again as it is our local, but hope they get the combinations honed and bring back the old flavours for our taste buds' sakes.

The cheese was nicer than the cheese the big chains use and well balanced flavour with the anchovies. Pizza was ready in 15 minutes. Could have had a bit more pepperoni for that price but otherwise happy. Staff was friendly. Would have given 5 stars if it was a bit cheaper.

Belmont Tavern - Grab a delicious meal at the Belmont Tavern

Vegetarian meal was disgraceful. It was a garden salad drenched in dressing. They used to have good food there but I won't be eating there again until they provide more choice and they can make a better meal.

The Belmont Tavern is, at best, hit and miss. At worst, it is a pain. I do keep going back for two…read morereasons. One because it is so close to my house and there is not much else around and two because when they have a good night, it really is a great night out. I am convinced if they had more competition in the area, they would be forced to lift their game and it would be perfect. For example, one night I will go there with some friends and we will be seated straight away, service is fast and the meals come in generous servings. No matter what you get, (steak, pasta, salad, cob loaf, chicken) it is delicious and everyone at the table has a fantastic meal. Then, I came here last Thursday night with a couple of people. The line to order was not big but the service was really slow. When we got to the counter they had 'run out' of 2 of the 4 things we wanted to order, then something happened and they had to enter our order again. Later, after waiting an hour for food were informed they had charged us twice. On the plus side, the girl at the till seemed genuinely good at what she does but had a slow register and only half the menu to work with. Also, once you get your food, it is always in generous portions and really tasty. So, sometimes it is a 5 star rating and sometimes it a 2 star, and I compromised on 4 stars overall.

I've made a few trips to Penny, some just for coffee (takeaway and sit down) and a few with food…read more Across the board, Penny is outstanding in terms of Brisbane's cafe scene. The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.
