Main courses: a giant chicken pizza and a carbonara pasta. I found the pizza quite satisfying - a little light on the sauce, but I believe that's the Italian way. The carbonara didn't go over as well - there wasn't much pancetta and it could have used more flavour. However, for the price, we both decided we'd return to Sofia's. And I love when Italian servers say "Buono appetito" when they drop off the meals. It's a nice touch.

The whole set-up here is a little peculiar: I feel as if this should be a take-away, or at least a walk-in deli, not some bizarre attempt at a restaurant. In the end, the food is good enough to warrant the eatery, if the experience is a peculiar one. Yes, Italian baguettes: it is as strange as it sounds. If it was an American deli place, where meatball subs were the specialty, I'd understand, but it isn't. It claims to be a purely Italian restaurant, but it really is just a mish-mash. A tasty mess, but a mess nonetheless. The problem is, this peculiarity around the food also creates a peculiarity in the decor. Si Signore tries to be a restaurant, with some of the more traditional restaurant settings: tables with nice cutlery, tablecloths, and so on, but how exactly this will improve your enjoyment of a baguette is beyond me. Beyond that, the traditional Italian bits and pieces strewn around the place create more of a strange than home-y vibe. Mercifully, the prices are cheap, and you can get the food on take-out. I'm glad I sat down. Friendly service, generous cup of good quality coffee, a free lotus biscuit !!!! What else can you ask for? If you haven't been before, this is a Italian restaurant. The food looked really good and the smells were also very good! They also do take away pizza as a group of four, took away 7 boxes of pizza! It actually looks like a popular place! My friends and I, sat there for a good hour or two, watching the world go by and the staff didn't bother us, didn't ask us if we wanted anything else, didn't make us feel bad for taking up a table. This is that kinda service I like! So the moral of the story for me .... Never walk past somewhere, without looking at it, take it in, look indoors, if you've got some time and dollar order something! It's served with tartar sauce, which is unusual for my American sensibilities as most Italian restaurants in the US would serve fried calamari with marinara sauce. Luckily, we'd also ordered the mozzarella in carrozza (breaded and fried mozzarella), which was served with a nice, peppery marinara sauce. I ordered the rigatoni alla amatriciana, which is rigatoni in tomato sauce with pancetta and onions. Very hearty and warming. We ordered small portions of spaghetti alla carbonara for the kids, but in retrospect we could have ordered a single adult portion and split it between them. They are six and eight and the kids portions were really quite large for them. As far as carbonaras go, I stole a bite and it was great. If I could order my own bowl and not feel extremely guilty about it health wise, I totally would. My husband ordered veal scallopina al funghi, and a side order of spinach. I didn't taste it but there wasn't any left at the end of the meal if that's any indication of how good it was. For dessert - tiramisu and chocolate cake to share amongst the four of us. Dessert portions are micro tiny though, so sharing is good for your waistline and pocketbook, but you might be left a bit wanting. Cappuccino was perfect and served with a small biscotti (packaged, bit homemade). Overall, a really lovely meal - small intimate setting, warm and inviting service, and really good food. I'd be happy to have Solo Pasta on my list of must-visits the next time I'm in Eastbourne.

Only one less-than-good experience, from several years ago, was when I told a waitress I didn't want the ice that she'd put in my brandy. She took it away, and after she brought me back an ice-free brandy I could smell nail varnish in it. Obviously she'd not wanted to waste time or expensive brandy, and must have simply scooped the ice out with her fingers. However, that was many years ago, and was just a slight aberration. Apart from that I've always had great, personable service. The outside seating area is fantastic in summer. UPDATE (above was from March 2008, below is from August 2011): Been here again after an absence of 18 months-ish. They've freshened the place up it had started to look a bit dowdy round the edges. I had their Quattro Stagioni (one of their premium pizzas), and it was the best pizza I've had in England for a long time. It came on a long, wooden board and was piled with good-quality ingredients. It came with personal chilli oil, and even one of those pizza cutter wheel things. Other items were also very good. Although the place was full, I had prompt, attentive service. I'm now giving the place five stars instead of the original four.
