So I'm going to try something a little different today…read more.. A live blog! Let's see how this place shapes up! Entrance and welcome: perfectly acceptable, polite and friendly. Drinks order taken swiftly. I wish I had known my only option was a giant bottle of sparkling water, would have been nice to have been told initially. Menu: expansive, typical of Italian cuisine. A little on the expensive side. The fish specials looked delicious but unfortunately the waiter could not confirm where the fish came from; I am currently on a sustainability kick and have decided only to eat fish if I can verify how and where it was caught, so I opted instead for a chicken dish. Main: oh how my hopes were raised upon the first mouthful of my dinner, but sadly the delightful flavour of the creamy mushroom and dolcelatte sauce was not to be continued throughout the rest of my meal. I'm saddened to report dry chicken and floppy veg, I can almost forgive the slightly overdone chicken (as it seems to be the done thing in restaurants at the moment) but I most certainly cannot forgive limp broccoli. The inventors of the concept of al dente should know better! Points for utterly impeccable potatoes however, dauphinois I believe. Feeling a bit disappointed after the main, I decided to go whole hog and get a dessert... Menu: very disappointing. I was hoping this meal would at least finish with bang, but judging by the menu I won't hold my breath. Dessert: opted for a pannacotta with butterscotch sauce, currently sitting waiting with bated breath. Despite the lack of atmosphere tonight (forgiven due to tonight being a Monday evening) I'm excited due to the anticipation! Sadly... I shouldn't have. I got a thick and grainy pannacotta with what tasted like shop bought butterscotch sauce. I'm devastated. Pannacotta should be light and silky, it should melt in the mouth and be a joy to eat. Unfortunately, although the flavour was pleasant enough I could never recommend this dessert at the price the restaurant is asking. Which leads me to my conclusion: I could easily have given one or two extra stars on my review tonight if the menu had not been as expensive as it was. For a few pounds less on everything, this would have easily got 3 or 4 stars. Value for money this ain't, but if you're looking for a restaurant that isn't a chain in the marina, you could do worse than coming here. Oh and one final point, the waiter hacking away in the distance is slightly disconcerting. I know illness can't be helped, but take those coughs into the bathroom or something!

I agree with the other reviewers in the sense that the food isn't going to blow you away, but you will leave having enjoyed a tasty, filling meal in nice surroundings. On my most recent visit I went for the veal Milanese - veal in breadcrumbs served with spaghetti Neapolitana and salad. A tasty dish and massive portions that will certainly leave you full. My friend went for a steak with pepper sauce that also looked tasty. Being quite full, but unable to resist the dessert menu entirely, we decided to share a banoffee pie which was yummy, as banoffee pie always is! On previous occasions I have had a number of their pasta, risotto and salad dishes, all of which I have been happy with. The Italian waiters are typically Italian, in that they can flirt like no other nation! Its so cliched but I fall for it every time and turn into a giggling school girl! What is it about the Italian accent that makes men instantly more attractive??

If you are looking for a good quality Italian meal, this will certainly do the trick. The food is of very decent quality indeed. Last night I got a goat's cheese pizza on a gluten-free base and I have to say that it was very nice. The base was not recognisable as gluten-free which is great because they do sometimes have the tendency to be rubbery in some other restaurants. There was absolutely loads of cheese on it which was very much appreciated! It is also very reasonably priced, although I would say that the alcohol is definitely too pricey. £5.60 for a beer?! As well as having good food, the service is very prompt. The waiters were extremely efficient, personable and interested in making sure we had a good evening. I will definitely be visiting this restaurant again.

The food was lovely and fresh and the menu was tantalising, I wasn't too sure what to go for but I went with a meaty feast type as I normally do and I wasn't disappointed. I also went for the additional cheesy crust as I am greedy and that was great. The restaurant is well decorated and there is a relaxed atmosphere whilst eating. The music was pleasant and not too loud and everything was clean as you would expect. Waiting staff were great and it was a lovely meal. There are better pizza places out there but this is one of the best chains around.

This place deserves support and greater recognition…read more Hungry in Eastbourne at 4:00pm on a Saturday afternoon, I feared I would be forced to have a kebab, burger or similar. Instead I chanced upon O Sole Mio and I'm very glad I did. I was served one of the best plates of Spaghetti Bolognese I've ever eaten. Home made tagliatelle Al dente with a knockout ragu, rich and plentiful. It was delicious! I've only had one plate here but if the rest of the menu is anything like as good then you should go. A real find. 10/10. Friendly, family staff too.

Post Brighton Marathon dinner. Two aspects for the review:…read moreservice and food quality. Service: very good 7 out of 10. The staff was very friendly, attentive and timely. I wonder how the management decided that a restaurant at this level thought that the uniform of the staff should be cheap tshirts. A proper outfit for the staff would reflect more the quality intent the restaurant places itself in. The staff however was in no way below standard. They were excellent despite the cheap billboard advert tshirts. could do a bit better and know their wines. Especially as there are a limited number and i would expect that a waiter would know the inside outs out of them... not to check the label. Food: here comes the problem. The note at the entrance of the restaurant looking for a head chef should have been a warning. Antipasti: OK. 5 out of 10. Nothing special. However, if you were to serve in Italy an antipasto with 2 slices of salame di milano (only) there would be a small riot. The bread was a cheap loaf, sliced. Maybe aligned to British expectations of what bread is. For an international palate, not acceptable... it would be the bread used to feed birds in parks. Mains: the quality of a kitchen can be seen from the simplest sauce. If your gnocchi al pomodoro have already 4 issues, then there is a problem: overcooked, unsalted, too much sauce, and the sauce was acid and unflavoured. I mean... 3 out of those issues should not exist. I could overlook at the overcooking and blame it on cultural preferences. There is no excuse for an acid tomato sauce. It was either from a cheap can, or not cooked long enough (most possibly?), or without any spices (normally spices tend to curb the acidic nature of tomatoes... not a causal combination btw. At least cheat and add some sugar...! The pasta ai frutti di mare: The spaghetti were overcooked (again, i could close an eye), lumped together, unsalted. The sauce was a derivative of the main tomato sauce (understandable) with the addition of "some" sort of seafood. The roast: if your meat is dry, the veggies old, and your yorkshire pudding has a hard rim and a soggy bottom: then something went really wrong. I am not an expert of yorkshire puddings, however i had much better than this from my local greasy spoon. Side vegetables: what was that? Steamed perhaps a few days before and warmed prior serving. The dark edge of the carrots is a telltale. Overall the food was uninspired, sad, tired and forced. Take any plate and extract the joy out of it, then warm it up and serve. I would give it a 2 out of 10. For the next chef: this would be a great opportunity to shake up the kitchen and support to excellent staff with equivalent food. Good luck...

It's a shame, it's in a beautiful location, but give this place a wide berth. Let's just say: there's a reason there are lots of special offers! Located on the upper end of Market Street, Il Bistro looks like it should fit well into the local restaurant scene. Another Mediterranean restaurant, yes, but looking pleasantly old-fashioned and with lots of special offers: yes please! However, on entry the terrible mistake becomes rapidly clear. Most of the old building is evident, and not in very good upkeep, and the tables are all squeezed too close together. And the food... What is advertised as Mediterranean is more some peculiar mish-mash of French, Italian, Spanish and Greek, all tasting strangely salty and a little off. The portions are huge, but a lot of plates seem to go back half-full: maybe the chef could take a hint? Even the salads, normally something you can't mess up, are slathered with seafood or goat's cheese... Everything is too excess, and it's just not a pleasant dining experience. Add to this that the service was non-existent and grumpy, and the wine horrible, and I don't think I'll ever return. It's a real shame: the heart's clearly in the right place here, but every aspect of the dining experience lets it down. Avoid!
