Service is typical of a tavern, you go up and order, nothing fancy. Footy playing on a few TV's, newspapers to read, pokies etc. Not a bad little place for a pub meal :)

"...HISTORIC VICTORIAN HOTEL.. SHOCKING REVIEWS..!! HONESTLY.. NOT THAT BAD ~ WOULDN'T TAKE MUCH TO MAKE IT A 'BLOODY GOOD' BISTRO..." Tonight, we met friends, for dinner at the historic WESTMEADOWS TAVERN in Ardlie Street, Westmeadows.. POSITIVES: - Original building - still got the pressed metal ceilings - Comfortable venue - 3 bars - Outdoor area - Good air-conditioning - Heaps o' parking - Seniors discounts - Weekly specials including a Monday $15 Parma night and a Wednesday $19 Steak night - Heaps o' staff - Nice and clean - Drive-thru bottle shop - 2 TV's in the dining area - they had a movie going on one - Pokies TONIGHT'S F & B: 2 x LLB's - Good ones, 1 x Lime Soda - Nice and limey, 1 x Carlton Draught - Cold pint COST: $22 2 x 300gm Porterhouse Steak [1 medium rare and 1 medium], Mushroom Sauce, Steakhouse Chips, Dressed Salad in side dish - Both Steaks cooked to perfection but it was a Mushroom Gravy, definitely not a Mushroom Sauce; Just a handful of chips, and they were a bit of a rough batch - broken and some had blackened ends; Nice dressing on the salad, but such a tiny little serving COST: $31 each 1 x Golden Ale Battered Flathead Tails, Bowl Tartare Sauce, same Chips, same Salad - Nice fresh tasty fish; Batter not too thick; Nice tasting Tartare COST: $22 1 x Chicken Parmigiana, same Chips, same Salad - The parma was delish - Beautifully cooked, thick, juicy, just the right amount of sauce and melted mozzarella COST: $23.50 NEGATIVES: - Whilst proteins were TASTY and WELL COOKED, meal presentation could have been so, so much better... - Meals could be a little larger - I think people out in the burbs expect a more GENEROUS serving - they tend to get a bit disappointed when it's not the case... - Meals could be a little less expensive - they're definitely a bit on the pricey side considering it's just kinda basic pub bistro fare - Hey, I love well cooked basic pub bistro fare, but not really at these prices... - They're not open till late enough - at just prior to 9pm, whilst we were finishing up eating our mains, two sets of people came in and seated themselves, both lots were told the chef had knocked off for the night, and they wouldn't be served a meal - VERY, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL - surely, out of all those staff members, someone should'v been able to step in, as some sort o' basic short order cook, or any sort of cook, for that matter..? Anyway, we were going to order some more drinks, dessert and coffee, but seeing and hearing this.. stopped us dead in our tracks..!! THREE LOTS OF LOST REVENUE ALL WITHIN THE SAME FIVE MINUTES...!!! Anyway, I suppose I'd be willing to go by there again, but Gee Wizz..!!, if they improved themselves..!!, just a little bit.. I'd WANNA GO there again...!!! Visited on Saturday 9 January for dinner with friends.

I swear it was Basa from the freezer at Coles. The Chicken Parmi had a choice of one sauce "Napoli". The mozzarella topping looked & tasted like plastic, the sauce was so watery it was akin to a small serve of soup & the chips were cold. I swear they were cooked the night before & even then weren't great. Pasta dishes were between $25 & $36. I got packet linguini topped with a jar of some sort of white sauce which was absolutely NOT Carbonara & exactly 4 frozen prawns. One choice of burger, which was tasteless & cold on the smallest Brioche bun I've ever seen. That cost 27.00. Even the garlic bread came out of a packet. The beer garden is a sad smoker's lounge & that's about it. Don't think they've emptied the ashtrays for a week but that's OK as most of the patrons just seem to prefer to stub out their butts on the ground. Staff were cold & unwelcoming & so were many patrons. On the bright side if you're a big drinker, they seem to serve people far past the point where they ought to have been offered a coffee. Shame really as from the outside it's all heritage charm but the inside seems to be only inviting to those who want to get legless sit in front of a row of poker machines losing their pay packet.

Mind you, when I left to go home a couple of friends asked me if I wanted a lift, to which I politely declined explaining that there was a pub that I discovered that I hadn't had a beer in as yet - being this pub. Well, there isn't all that much that really stood out about this pub though - it is what you would expect from a suburban pub. There was a TAB, pokies, and a restaurant, as well as an outdoor area out the back, which was full of smokers (which doesn't make it a really enjoyable experience if you are not a smoker, and I would hesitate to call it a beer garden). The pub itself wasn't bad, but it is certainly not one that I would travel all the way out to Essendon just to visit.

Michelle had excellent advice regarding the menu and catered to my requests. Extra tables, table cloths on all the tables and the open area closed off. I also requested to set up prior to the function, including a tribute table and I dropped off vases with flowers to be placed on tables. A fabulous grazing table under a tree inside the room, was ready upon arrival. Platters of food came out regularly. The event ran seamlessly. Everyone was impressed with the food, the service and the function room, the Vinery. We were fortunate to have lovely weather which really suits the Vinery with the atrium and grapevines adding to the atmosphere. Michelle, a special thank you to you for overseeing the event and catering to all my requests. Marija J R

Rather, I was expecting to just find one of those new, and rather boring, pubs. It turned out not to be the case, though their selection of beers were rather limited. I booked a table for 20 people for a Sunday night dinner (during the phone conversation no information was given about the specifics of the venue, including the dress code) and upon arriving at the venue, some of my guests were not allowed to go in because they were "too casual" (they had hoodies and zip up jackets) while people with thongs and shorts wondered freely inside the venue. I was informed by a security guard to call anglers tavern and ask to speak to a manager. I did. I called and was told the manager was not available to talk to until the next day (even though he was inside that night) I asked to speak to another manager and was told no. What kind of venue that is customer service denies a customer the right to entry then denies them the right to speak to a manager? Absolutely horrid. Not only were the security guards rude and arrogant, so were the other staff we dealt with in this short amount of time. I had to relocate my party (at the very last minute) to another venue because why would I spend money on a place that has no understanding of the basic concept of respect and has no consideration for customer satisfaction. Avoid at all costs.

We ordered the French toast, which wasn't dipped in the mixture long enough, so it just tasted like bread. We also ordered the eggs and bacon with croissant. The eggs were completely runny even though we mentioned on 3 separate occasions we wanted the eggs well scrambled. Then there is the issue of service which is NON EXISTENT! The server took our order and dropped off our meal...that was it! She didn't check on us or check back with us. We were the ones that had to awkwardly get her attention when our food wasn't cooked right and had to ask for it to be fixed. Holy cow did she not appreciate that! If looks could kill we would be dead!!! She was just too busy laughing and carrying on with the cook and others to actually do her job. This was beyond disappointing! This restaurant definitely lives up to their name...LAZY! There should be zero stars for a place like this!!!
