The real attraction here is the walk on the north Manitowoc jetty. On your way to the lighthouse you will come upon a water impoundment that can be rife with shore birds. A little further on is the Paws and Play dog park. Beyond is the walk to the lighthouse. If it is windy and the surf is up you might skip the lighthouse walk because you'll get wet or worse. All in all a nice area to spend a couple of hours. Bring your binoculars and snacks. On a sunny day this can be a great day in the making. On a cold, rainy day, not so much. People in Manitowoc are usually friendly. Take the time to chat, you might make a new friend.

It soon turns into a dirt path. There are several foot bridges that cross little gulleys. You have to love autumn. The leaves were colorful. Most of them have fallen and provided a colorful blanket on the forest floor. The path was cleared for the most part. The parts that weren't were easy to follow as the trees are marked with paint spots. The trail meanders through the forest. There are a few short steep inclines that will get the old heart pumping. There are roots that pose a trip hazard, so pay attention or you may end up doing a face plant. The splits are well marked. We hiked 2.7 miles in all. This will be a trail we will hike often. A ways into the woods is a very nice picnic spot with a table and an ancient tree sculpture. If you're looking to get into the woods that is close to town, this is where you want to go

A set of long stairs usher you up to the tower and that is where we started our journey. We climbed to the top and what a sight it is to see. This tower is high up as it sits on the crest of a hill. Amazing and a bit scary all the same time when you get to the top. Bring your pup cause this place is a perfect little spot to hike thorough with them. Trails are well marked and walking through the forest here is a bit surreal as you are led through windy twists and turns that are littered with rocks and trees and so much nature it is just a pleasure to experience. We drove up from Milwaukee and it takes about 50 minutes to get here. When heading home I suggest taking the scenic route back and driving by Long lake and through the country side of Wisconsin. The views from the bluff are fantastic. The beach is sandy and lonely. You will rarely encounter anyone on the trails. This is a magical, remote area that is a must visit for nature lovers. Deer, fox, porcupines, and all nature of other little critters. I will reiterate that the birding is wonderful. The area where Point Creek meets Lake Michigan is a magical place. If you want to commune with nature in a truly beautiful place, this is a hidden gem you will not want to miss. Bring someone you love, a bottle of wine, and a picnic lunch. So we called you, and you told us that he would be released to the wild once he was rehabilitated. That or if he was too domesticated he'd be made an "ambassador" used for learning and educational purposes. In less than 72 hours you had him sent to his death for no reason. He was full of love, and trust. He gave no symptoms of rabies. And you murdered him in cold blood. HIS NAME WAS BUDDY AND HE WAS SO LOVED! There's no raccoon habitat for rehabilitation. It's an act and a script you feed desperate pet owners to gain their trust and take their loved coons to be murdered. He wasn't wild. He wasn't aggressive. And he wasn't rabid. He was a good boy. He was happy in his home. He was supposed to live a long life. You cut that life short at 5 months old. He was perfect. And you murdered him! To the Management and Administration of Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, ​I am writing to formally demand accountability and full transparency regarding the surrender and immediate euthanasia of our 5-month-old raccoon, Buddy. ​When we contacted your facility following communication with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, we were given clear assurances regarding his intake. We were explicitly told that Buddy would be evaluated for wild rehabilitation or, if found to be too habituated, retained as an educational ambassador. ​We entrusted him to your facility based directly on those representations. ​Instead, within less than 72 hours, Buddy was euthanized. He exhibited zero symptoms of illness, distress, or aggression, and was completely habituated and healthy. ​Given the stark contradiction between what your staff promised prior to intake and the outcome that immediately followed, I am demanding direct answers to the following questions: ​What specific diagnostic, behavioral, or medical criteria were used to authorize his immediate euthanasia within 72 hours? ​Why were options for educational placement or sanctuary transfer ruled out after explicit assurances were made that these were valid pathways? ​Is it standard policy at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary to assure surrendering individuals of rehabilitation or ambassador placement when immediate euthanasia is the intended intake protocol? ​The public and community members who turn to your organization in good faith deserve truthful communication about the actual protocols applied to surrendered animals. ​I expect a formal written response detailing the internal intake records, staff notes, and justification for Buddy's outcome. ​Alexandra Balthazor

This is a beautiful land preserve located just outside of Fredonia Wi. The Ozaukee Washington land…read moretrust oversees this preserve. Parking is limited with just two spots right off of clover valley road next to the trail head sign but you can park along the side of the road. The trail to the top of the hill leads you to a old house remains. Just the foundation remains but it is a really interesting find. There is also the remains of a larger building, possibly a barn at one time. The structure does have some graffiti And we seem to find beer bottles there every time we visit. A hot spot for the local teenagers I'm sure. The trail leads you along a huge grassland area where you can easily spot turkey vultures, Hawks and other large birds hunting for small game. Once you reach the end of the grassland area the trail splits and you can either go up to your left or down to your right. If you choose the upward trail you will hike up and down a trail that winds down from the hilltop into the forest, finishing at the plank walk and looping back to the opposite trail. There is a bench area along this trail. If you choose the downward trail it will take you directly to a plank walk down to Huiras lake. There is a small Pier that goes out onto the lake so you can observe the otters that swim there, or watch the ducks. I am unsure how the fishing is at this lake. There is no boat access from the land preserve. This is a nice place to walk your dog, or to take your family on a nature walk. I have brought my cub scouts here to do bird counts, it's not well traveled and because it isn't you can really enjoy the solitude while there.

This is an excellent trail for hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling. It's obvious that the trail is well maintained as there are piles of freshly cut brush along the edges. I like to start at Rockwood Rd near Manitowoc and walk north from there.. the trail passes farms, fields, and woods. You will see all kinds of birds and other wildlife on a hike. This will become one of my favorite hikes.

This is a very pleasant 14 mile bike and walking trail that I really enjoy using. Wide and well…read moremaintained hard pack gravel makes for an easy ride. The trail is mostly straight and has minimal elevation change (less than 50 feet over the entire 14.25 miles). While the views may not be stunning, they are quite bucolic. Rolling fields with grazing cows, lush farmland, wooden bridges over deep ravines contains bubbling brooks. There are small parking areas along the trail allowing for various start points. The main trail head is in Denmark and the other end is on Rockwood Road (near Big Apple (bar and grill). I recommend starting at Rockwood, packing a picnic, and taking a break at the Denmark trail head pavilion (which has restrooms).
