The Arts District of San Pedro is a strange little conglomeration of galleries, shops, restaurants,…read morea pawnshop or two, a couple of bars, a thrift store, a coffee house, a tattoo shop, the old Warner Theater, and various places that people claim are galleries but they are simply living inside of these business/industrial spaces perhaps creating their art inside. Or, maybe not? This area is basically defined by 6th and 7th Street, South of Pacific Avenue. Though one could argue it stretches a little bit farther in the various directions. There are certain art complexes in L.A., (say Bergamont station is a great example), where when you visit you will be confronted by numerous galleries that are open and exhibiting their various styles of art. This, however, is not the case with the Arts District of San Pedro. What you do find here, in terms of art galleries, are store fronts that are closed and are open by appointment only. Thus, the question has to be raised, is this an Art's District at all? For me, I look at it as an overall expensive area of San Pedro that was once a functioning downtown but has lost that definition long ago. Thus, the storefronts are simply a place where you know art exists but the chances are you will never truly see it. Therefore, You must see this area as art onto itself. So, when you go here, do not necessarily expect to see any personal creations of art. Simply understand that you have to believe that there is art in the structures, the businesses, the restaurants, and the people that are hiding behind the closed and locked doors that they claim are galleries.

This local drive was for checking out Cafe Wang's location instead we found a bunch of Victorian homes around Old Town La Verne. There were also other local coffee houses I'd like to come back to try as well. The stalls were Filipinos who are small businesses selling their goods: Christmas ornaments, jewelry, clothing, small toys, etc. There was a DJ playing some rocking music. Next door was Hi-Fi Kitchen selling delicious Filipino food. Ube For U Bae was featured selling delicious homemade Ube desserts. We went home with a mini-feast. We had a good time and we even ran in to some friends. I'd highly recommend!

This particular mural is placed prominently on the corner of Beverly and Union. It's colorful but…read moreto use this as a landmark for the Filipino Town in Los Angeles doesn't really make sense to me. Why? The mural doesn't represent anything Filipino about it. It shows an astronaut in it but no Filipinos has ever been in space. There's also what look like a train but not sure what it symbolizes. I'd rather see a mural depicting a small barrio with a nipa hut, a farmer with his carabao, kids playing in the street, or people celebrating a town fiesta.

Seeing how much ELA has grown in ways, but kept a lot of nostalgia in other ones has also been pretty cool - the show Gentefied comes to mine especially being such a big part, central and area of LA Latin & Hispanic culture. East LA (not to be confused with LA East - which covers a large part of the East half of Greater Los Angeles for events and experience on Yelp) has a lot of character and care, mixing in the new with old shouldn't take away from the people and places that came before and will continue to thrive here for hopefully years to come #SupportSmallandLocal Citadel Outlets, Gold E Line, all things east of the 5, Pieology Monterey Park, Vincent Price Art Museum and other hidden gems are just a few places and spots I've frequented since moving back to LA nearly 14 years ago. I can tell you that when you drive through ELA it truly is like the song by Randy Newman. So much to see. Landmarks everywhere, possible celebrity sightings, movie sets, world known restaurants, and gangs. I bring up the gangs because although still very dangerous they have been glorified and people now want to walk that fine line of living that gangster life yet still safe. No my review is not about the gang life but I have seen neighborhood tours here in and around ELA. The funny thing you don't have to be afraid of being shot or mugged in ELA no more. Other cultures are out in force walking the multitude of unusual small businesses here. Here is a place where it can get real serious quickly. I wouldn't suggest being here alone with almost no gas in the dead of the night but chances are if you did you would be fine (maybe). If your still reading I appreciate it. ELA on the surface is so diverse and uber exciting. There is something happening on every corner. If its not a movie co shooting the next thriller it can certainly it can be the "Elotes" (mexican style Corn on the cob). Ive seen countless of idiots pull over block traffic just to get a Parmesan and mayonnaise corn on the cob. Or how about a mangonllada. A variety ways a mango and chili can be served frozen in a cup. Highly recommended. How about the ton of tortilla shops. Get'em fresh and hot! Mexican bread or otherwise know as "pan dulce" is so good in the morning, or in the afternoon. Come to think of it dinner and bedtime too. The great thing is Los Angeles as a whole never falls short of great Mexican breads. And it would not be a complete day without seeing a low rider. Someone on your street or nearby is driving one. The great part of ELA is the opportunity, either to spend or make money here. I wanted to send some love to our other neighbor Santa Ana. Downtown Santa Ana is still overrated…read morein my opinion. But people are starting to notice the fun things to do and see here now. I feel the Downtown area is becoming a familiar destination for some. Lots of events are performed here almost every month. I love the food and coffee shops here. Santa Ana still has some of the best Mexican and Latin foods here in my opinion. They also have museums of art, and Car shows here. No crime here hardly, its safe to hang out in Downtown Santa Ana, believe it or not. So, I love it. Gotta start coming out here often to spread my love for the city.

When I moved to Arizona back in the 80's, there is a part of Phoenix called Paradise Valley, and they refer to that as "PV." Having come from CA and knowing the REAL "PV" is out there, I would have none of this Paradise Valley "PV." But I digress. I have old, old movie footage of walking with my mom (dad was shooting the movie) in and around Marineland. Marineland, however, faded into oblivion long ago, and for so long, all that remained was a parking lot overgrown by grass. That was it. Until 2009, I think, when the lovely Terranea Resort came to life........ but my heart remains with Marineland, and if you were a kid back when I was, you know why. It's just hard to let go, that's all. Then, there's Wayfarer's Chapel, so exquisitely situated on Portugeuse Bend of the peninsula.....an all glass chapel where thousands have wisely chosen to marry amidst all that beauty and scenery. It can't be beat, and thank goodness, that is still here to view. PV is quiet, lovely, breathtaking, and pretty much out of my price range for buying a home overlooking the dazzling Pacific Ocean.........but driving around is for free, stopping by some of the sights is also free, and I'd encourage you to do that. Although it is such a far drive from my area, it was so worth the drive…read more I had an amazing time on this hiking trail to the beach. It was a beautiful day, not too hot nor sunny for an afternoon walk. The Trump golf course was a pleasant site too. I saw plenty of seagulls flying by, lizards, rabbits, dolphins swimming close to the shore, people walking their dogs on the beach, and sadly a deceased seal. You don't have to pay for parking. It was a pretty fun hike that didn't take a lot of effort. Definitely a great place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature. I loved it. FYI: Even if it's not that sunny outside, you should still put on sunscreen. I learned the hard way -_- ugliest tan-line ever! Good thing I have the entire summer to even it out. Enjoy.
