The receptionist checked in for us(because when he booked the hotel room it accepted and the convention was hold this hotel, so they trust us) and told my husband to call and talk Amex customer service person. We got our room and my talked to the Amex person who told my husband "no tap, no tip, use the scan". So my husband went back to the front desk and told them what he talked with Amex person, then tried to use Amex card but didn't work. They swapped another credit card scanner, but still didn't work. Finally, another card worked, so we made it but hard work. Our room was good size for us but, sink drain was super slow, and we told about it, didn't fixed until we checked out, and room TV didn't work (we heard same complain from the people who attended the convention) and reported but it finally worked in the morning we left. Our hotel room booking plan was included executive lounge plan, we enjoyed cocktail time with some Turkish Pupus and some Turkish sweets. Breakfast was buffet, many selection of Turkish meals. Not everybody could speak English (except receptionist) but their service was common.

There is a lovely art gallery with works that one can buy. The views of the city are great. Breakfast is delicious as well. Hotel is a bit pricey but it's close to the airport-which is very convenient.

Well, I'll tell you, super nice staff. They speak enough English and are well trained. Clean small rooms. Great for the price.

Thankfully, 'The Rox' Hotel is just such a place nearby Ataturk Airport Istanbul 4-5 Star Hotel at a very reasonable price which I base not on the property itself, or the little amenities, clean rooms, good restaurant, but in the level of service every person you come into contact with offers you. From the time you pull into driveway, to the young bellman opening your car door assisting you before your foot ever touches the ground to being swept to the front reception check-in to being delivered with your bags to your room. (If only the whole journey was this efficient and pleasant, going home would become an obsolete concept) All for a fraction of what you would pay at a Ritz-Carlton property. Mind you, I am not saying this is the Ritz, but the staff here could just as easily have been. After a nice hot shower (that usually take the water about 5 minutes to get to hot racing from a remote water heater to your shower head), a fresh set of clothes, I set out to find something to eat. I thought of room service, but I never enjoy it as much solo as when sharing a meal. So I set out thinking maybe a bit of fresh air after 13 hours of recirculated aircraft air would do me good, but did a 360 in the front lobby revolving door when the cold, dark, wet fog seemed less appetizing concept of food hunting in lesser known territory. Since I was about 5 km from my usual layover neighborhood. Which turned out to be a good choice as the hotel restaurant was open until 2300/11pm and offered a very pleasant, wholesome and tasty meal as follows. Being greeted by the Waiter/Maître d' (since he was much more than your average waiter, yet solo is not a proper title as call a cook a chef when he is the only one in the kitchen...then he is only a cook...and chef (French for Chief) of himself.... my well appointed 'server' was only joined in the restaurant at that late night by the bartender) He offered my drink based on his suggestion of a nice Turkish red 2015 Angora house wine made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes near the Greek border reminiscent of a California Cabernet/Merlot with smooth berry/fruit nose, slight astringentness and nice finish. My meal started with the soup d'jour Turkish lentil, an entree' of a simple local dish of Karisik Izgara Kebab grilled meat medallions of succulent chicken, Entrecote steak cooked rare as I like it, and mince local lamb (which was fresh enough to be halal, but forgot to ask), grilled tomato, chili and rice. Simple presentation, but the flavors made anything the eye missed irrelevant. On several suggestions for something authentically Turkish, I finished with the classic Turkish dessert Sekerpare which is a slightly sweet traditional Turkish sweet, accompanied by creamy Vanilla Ice cream. With my belly pleasantly full, and only 8 hours until I needed to be back at the airport security check in, I checked emails in the high speed wifi and off to dreamland until my buffet breakfast before departure. My wakeup call was O600 (the O is for OMG it's EARLY!), 3-S Navy talk for 3 things a guy does in the bathroom in the morning and daypack ready (luggage already checked through to Riga, Latvia my end destination on this trip) and into the same restaurant I had a late supper for one of the best European breakfast buffets ever including a custom omelet station. I will let the photos tell the rest. Thank you everybody at The Hotel Rox! Hoping all good travelers with that horrid 13-22 hour layover in Istanbul find their way here at least once. Remember, regardless of which country you are in or local custom on tipping, everyone that provides service above and beyond deserves to be recognized and rewarded. It makes a nice gesture and goodwill easily remembered to encourage and inspire the future of such service. and as always... "Always be True to the Cuisine" - Chef Dom D'Maestro
