Why buy something for that much money used when I can get it brand new for less on Amazon?

Toys, records, pop culture collectibles, video games, genre movies - bascially anything that would get you made fun of in high school - they sell here. New and used. When you walk through the front door you'll think that you were just transported back in time to a 1980s corner store/video rental shack. The Bearded Wonder at the counter next to the popcorn machine (oh yeah, they sell popcorn too) will glare at you as if you just walked into his bedroom without knocking - but that's okay - just ignore him. He's too stoned on popcorn fumes to do you any harm...or provide any customer service (more on that later). The movies are situated in a cool, geek-chic fashion (Festival Flicks, American Directors, etc.) which lets you know that this isn't your average video rental store. Actually, video rentals aren't that average anymore which is another thing that makes Spin-In unique. Past the video rental section is the toy section where you'll find vintage G.I. Joe and Star Wars figures in a glass case. There's also a lot of new action figure releases and collectibles. Phase III of Spin It is the music department. This section houses a plethora of new and used vinyl as well as CDs and cassettes. Their record selection is awesome and perfectly organized. They have a lot of cool used 45 rpm records. I picked up the Japanese version of KISS's "I Was Made for Loving' You" single from 1979 for $12. Good deal. One of the few good deals in the store. That leads me to my biggest pet peeve here: This store is waaay expensive. The G.I. Joe and Star Wars figures I mentioned range in price from $10-30. While I understand the temptation to jack the prices for vintage toy items, I don't agree with it. I think that this store is taking advantage of people who are unaware that they can find this stuff on eBay for way better deals. But people will apparently pay the high price to have it in their hands right away, so it is what it is. What I can't fathom is why Spin-In charges so much for new items that can be picked up at big box stores for much less. For example, why would I pay them $35.99 for one of the KISS vinyl re-issues when I can get it at the HMV at Champlain Place down the street for $22.99? If I'm paying that much extra I should get a tax receipt with it so I can claim it as a charitable donation. I know it's important to support local businesses but there's a limit as to how far I'll go. It has to be a win-win situation for both the business and the consumer, not win-lose in favour of the business. Not all of the new toys are outrageously priced, but some are. This leads me to pet peeve #2: I wanted to purchase a couple of items from the locked collectibles display. I looked around for employee assistance. The record counter guy was busy with three customers in line plus he had another guy waiting for him in the video game section. I went back out front to see Tommy Chong who was still standing dutifully by his popcorn machine huffing butter fumes. "You'll have to see the guy in the record shop. He has the keys to the display," was his response as he stared off into the distance with his mouth hanging slightly open. Mr. Chong wasn't busy and had zero customers to take care of. I guess being the popcorn monitor is a pretty intense job and he can't be bothered with other menial tasks such as assisting customers. I had to wait for the record guy, who was totally patient and friendly and didn't seem to be at all bothered that he was busy while his co-worker wasn't. Spin-In is a great place to browse around and take notes as to what to look out for on eBay and Amazon and at least one of the staff members is friendly and helpful. Their prices are simply too high to patronize them on a regular basis. While there are some good deals to be had amongst the used records and toys, they are few and far between and if you're not a patient person who likes digging for treasure you'll just turn around and leave.

Sunrise Records is very similar to the FYE chain (in the USA), which has most of their stores at malls. While I was on a roadtrip through Canada, I made it a point to stop in at several locations at several malls in Atlantic Canada including this store in Dieppe. I needed music for the long ride! Sunrise (HMV) has some very good sale prices including $5, $10, and $15 CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays. The prices here are very competitive and most of the time cheaper than Best Buy and some music stores located in the USA, even after paying the HST. I spent a good amount of time shopping at the Dieppe location browsing through the CDs. I picked up several popular CDs priced around $5 and $10 each, including a few Canadian artists (not sold in stores in the USA). I'll admit I did pick up the Carly Rae Jepsen EP CD (Curiosity) on sale for $5, just so I could blast and croon along to the very catchy summer anthem "Call Me Maybe" while cruising along TC Hwy 2: "Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my number, so call me maybe..." There were also a few tracks on this EP, which were not released in the USA. My friend needed cover up his ears with big headphones as I drove into the sunset (chuckle).

There is so many different items and collectibles being sold here, it'll take several hours or even…read moredays to go through everything. It has card games, movies, video games, toys, and more. You will most likely need the help of an employee to find specific items because the store can be overwhelming. The items are sold at market value. If you are a collector, give them a shot. All in the same size store. It is chaos. And it's awesome. I'm always on the search for a specific issue of a comic I read in the 80s that I need to complete my collection (boy, does that sound geeky). So of course we had to stop in here. There is very little room for people. It's floor-to-ceiling books, comics, trading cards, games, etc. They have absolutely everything, but good luck finding it. Boxes on top of boxes of comics in sort-of order. Fortunately the owner knows where everything is. He's a very busy man, from the looks of it; the store was very busy on our visit, and it was a Tuesday. If you love digging (literally) through mountains of media in search of a hidden jewel, you will absolutely love this place. Definitely worth a drive to the valley.

As good as it gets in Saint John…read more When I was growing up I would hit this place every Friday night to see which albums came in during the week. More often than not something I was looking for was in stock and I went home with a new CD to lose myself in. I almost never had to special order anything. All the staff I've ever dealt with (Usually owner Gordie) have been rad, laid back and helpful. The selection ranges from a good amount of local albums, a healthy dose of indie staples and new albums from bands that matter. If you're looking for music more along the lines of top 40, this isn't your place. The used selection is always healthy and will probably have something you're looking for - and often at an incredible price. Stop by and see just how great this store is. Saint John is lucky to have it.

Their prices are actually pretty reasonable compared to the record shops in the bigger cities. If you're in the market for old 45 singles, you're in luck because SecondSpin has a huge assortment. Don't go there if you don't have a lot of time (or patience) on your hands though. The 45s are scattered all over the store with no rhyme or reason as to how they're situated (condition, genre, price, used or new.) After a bit of digging, I got frustrated and moved on. I didn't feel like getting down on my knees to sort through the unalphabetized singles in the milk crates on the floor. SecondSpin dudes, if you're reading this - organize your 45s and pick them up off the floor. Also, the store doesn't have bags. You'll have to bring your own. It was raining the day I was in there so I asked for a bag for my purchases. The counter guy looks at me blankly and says "I have no bags, man." He said this as if I was already supposed to instinctively know this. So I had to put the records under my shirt so they wouldn't get wet. I'm giving them three out of five for their reasonable prices and diversity of stock. I can live with the byob policy but I shouldn't have to bring kneepads to search their stock. Sort it out, guys.
