Forget "sandwiches", this place makes sandwizes because the guy that runs this place is a wizard!…read moreHe knows his flavours, he knows his breads (which he collects at 4AM every morning), and him and his staff go above and beyond to look after the customer. We drove past this place one afternoon and the wife and I knew we had to eat here. We found street parking and made our way over. From the outside the red neon sign gave a very strong impression. Inside it was a little bit dull but that doesn't matter when you start to read the menu board. All the menu items suggest bold American flavours. Choose your filling, bread (sourdough or rye) and whether you want it fresh or toasted. I was worried about my sandwich being toast until I was told that they'd add the lettuce afterwards to prevent it from wilting. The food came out quick. My wife asked for soy milk in her coffee which they had run out of. However one of the staff went to the corner store, JUST FOR US, to buy a new carton. I was amazed by this. This truly was a selfless act and to me it defined what great customer service is. Our food came out quickly and tasted amazing. I ordered the hoagie sandwich. I know in The States a hoagie is this massive bread roll sandwich thing, but this being Australia they brought out a toasted sandwich which tasted just like a hoagie. Perfect down to the last bite. The staff are great company and extremely friendly. I want... nay, NEED to come back here to try some of the other sandwiches. A great place for a meal which isn't too heavy but will leave you thoroughly satisfied.

So if you're like me and have lived in Sydney for a while, this place is a godsend. They have both east coast and west coast reubens, onion rings, buffalo wings, thick shakes, actual delicious bbq sauce, just about everything you miss. And on top of it all, the staff/owner here is so nice! They served me my hot chocolate and accidentally spilt a bit onto the saucer, and they quickly apologized and replaced the saucer, before my brain even registered what happened. Love! Anyways, this is a great place for any American cafe nostalgia.

I can tell this place is inspired by Katz's deli in NYC since the Massive Reuben they serve comes…read moreclose to the same size. It's seriously hard to find a good Reuben in Sydney. Like, really hard...for some reason, there's been an uptick of Reuben sandwiches being offered in Sydney that aren't Reuben sandwiches at all. Just because you use corned beef on a sandwich, it doesn't make it a Reuben. If you use beef brisket and sauerkraut on a sandwich and call it a Reuben, you're full of crap...looking at you Copper Mill. A classic Reuben is a hot sandwich composed of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian or Thousand Island dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread. It originated in, you guessed it, America... Anyway, Reuben Republic started off as a food stall and then morphed into this brick and mortar shop. It's good too, as the sandwich is pretty legit. You can order an east coast or west coast Reuben (get the east) and you can get pastrami or corned beef. I personally prefer pastrami so I went with that. If you're hungry get the Massive Reuben (off the not-so-secret-menu) which is double portions of meat...my only gripe with this is there should be more sauce on it, but if you just ask for it they'll provide you some on the side. Service is top notch, and they have other offerings like shakes and salads. I would definitely come back, as it's been the most legit Reuben I've had in Sydney since Ruby & Rach is no longer around.

Excellent and awesome coffee overall, and their muffins are also something. Love this deli like concept; especially the produce like deli selection; definitely one of the best deli cafes around in Sydney. Coffee and cheese definitely go hand in hand here. Sandwiches, sandwiches, SANDWICHES!!!…read more Like Joey from Friends, I love me some sandwiches. I believe this place opened less than a month ago, and I noticed it when I went to Single Origin one day and made a note to check it out. As its namesake states, this place is a simple sandwich shop. The interior is cozy, the people friendly, and the music sets the mood. Me gusta. The place is clean, straight to the point with natural and fresh ingredients, affordable (under $10!) and tasty to boot. They don't do sides except for the bread they serve during breakfast, and they also have salads if you don't want to have a sandwich. Let's be real here though, why would you go to The Sandwich Shop and not order a sandwich? Depending on the sandwich, you get to choose what kind of bread you'd like as well between rye, sourdough, and whole wheat. The sandwiches on tap are: Chicken Schnitzel The Sandwich Club Rare Roast Beef Tuna + White Bean Smoked Salmon Bagel The Original New York Reuben Pulled Pork The Ultimate Salad Sandwich You can also create your own sambo if you like. My friend and I ordered the Rare Roast Beef and The Original New York Reuben. If you like cheese, you will like the Rare Roast Beef. The Fontina Cheese used to top this was massive and flavourful. The roast beef could have been a bit more rare for my taste but it was still very good nonetheless. The Reuben...the reuben was great. I wouldn't call it the Original New York Reuben but that's not a bad thing. The Reuben served here was very high quality, as the beef is a thicker and juicier slice than you'd get with a New York Reuben. The cheese, sauerkraut and dressing were great as well. Definitely the best "Reuben" I've had in Sydney so far. If you like sandwiches you can't go wrong here. I'll have to come back to try the others.

A conqueror of the unimaginable, a nightmare to many, a mutant hybrid that only the bravest will face & only the strongest will survive. I went on a hunt for the mythical beast , the urban legend that countless witnesses say inhabits the kitchen of Bertoni in Balmain...the terrifying, the fearsome, the Lasagne Burger! For the coming battle, I downed a delicious coffee that some will say is one of the finest in Sydney. I waited for my prey, patiently, anticipating the moment to strike at it with my trusty fork & knife. Then all of a sudden, unannounced, it pounced on the table before me! Kitted out in its deep fried multi layered lasange armor, succlent beef patty & oozing, melty mozzarella. On top of all that , it was armed with a side of shoe string fries & blood red ketchup to distract me from my goal! We battled long & hard in a grueling endurance match. As I struck out at the daunting beast I found a weak spot in its armor, out flowed molten cheese & sauce, I hurt it! Once I had a taste, my adrenalin was pumping, flowing through my veins & I had to have more. I was relentless, hacking, cutting, chomping & devouring my way through everything that the hybrid lasagne burger monster could throw at me. Then in a last ditch effort, I took a powerful swipe with my fork, sauce & cheese flung out and dripped down my chin...I towered over the tray where the beast once stood. I did it. I slayed the beast in its giant, filling, saucy, cheesy, meaty, gruesome entirety. I sat there exhausted but relieved. I came, I conquered & ready for the next beast that Bertoni unleashes on an unsuspecting world!

We took the opportunity on a day off to visit. Knowing it's popularity, we ordered online which was awesome because it meant they were ready on arrival. Now you can get a sandwich pretty much anywhere these days, but these are more than just your regular sandwich. They are massive gourmet sandwiches, on the softest, freshest bread ever! You can get some of their listed options or alter them on the order if there's something you can't eat. We ordered the "Jimmy Sandwich" on brown bread (you can opt brown or white) with Chilli chicken, lettuce, avocado, caramelised carrot, cucamber, spanish onion, rocket & red pesto. We added some pickles. A delicious and huge sandwich that kept us full for hours. Some other examples include sandwiches with Veggies, chicken schnitzel, ham, poached chicken, smoked salmon and even special add ons of caramelised carrot or potato salad. There's also salads served in little takeaway boxes if you prefer. Salads are dressed with a light balsamic vinegar and olive oil. We went to the Alexandria store and there's a few stools to sit outside and eat. We're super keen to return when we get a day off!

It's a fairly decent sized space with some seating outside, being right next to a public park is good and bad for parking. The service is always friendly and accommodating depending on your group size, probably best to call ahead of time for large groups as its big enough to be a cafe but not large enough to be classified a restaurant in Sydney. All the produce used in the food is fresh and most likely of organic origins (which I'm guessing on the decor and vibe). Simple and clear menu has some classics like a Chicken Schnitzel but done with a humble salad and chipotle that transports your tastebuds. Breakfast has some healthy-ish options but these are taken in consideration with the core component of the meal. Take the Bacon and Egg Roll, it's served as a burger and the barbecue sauce commands the dish. Cakes and pastry is sold as eat-in and take away items (which change every so often), coffee and milkshakes as well. The gingerbread is a favourite of mine - super refreshing for the sinus. At the end of the day, this is a humble little place that 's rustic feel and pastel interiors make it feel homely and the food cements this feeling. A place to return for sure.
