We visited Loch Fyne a couple of weeks ago and were very satisfied with our meal.
Today (Sunday), however, was quite a different story. Five of us sat down just after 5:00pm and were asked to choose drinks. It was quite a while before our order was taken but the waitress was quick to try and take our food order.
We ordered whitebait, squid, smoked salmon and scallops for starters. None were pronounced as being outstanding but the queen scallops were remarkable for their size they were tiny and, to add insult to injury, they were gritty. We registered our mild dissatisfaction with the scallops and waited for better things from the mains.
We'd ordered prawn and scallops, seafood selection, trout, smoked haddock and scampi. The seafood selection, advertised as including new potatoes which did not arrive until requested, and the prawn and scallops pan-fried with white wine and butter were to be served with
sautéed mushrooms, onions and spinach, fragrant Thai rice and chilli jam. The chilli jam turned out to soy sauce a mistake in the kitchen. In fairness the duty manager, once this guest had realised the error, had a second serving prepared but, by the time it got the table, the rest of us had nearly finished.
Desserts of ice cream, crème brûlée and cheesecake were all satisfactory.
The disappointing scallops were crossed off the bill and two of the crème brûlées were also credited to compensate for the soy sauce mishap and in total with two beers, a bottle of sauvignon blanc and some water the total was £138. As ever, we'd have rather paid the full price and got a good meal. This is the price one pays for eating on a Sunday when the main crew are off but the price is the same as during the week when, in our experience, the whole production is much better.
We'll give it one more try! read more
