I've been coming to the Lockport for nearly 30 years (and I'll be 35 in just a few months). The owners, Nan and Deb, are usually around, either in the kitchen, at the cash wrap, or chatting with customers. In years past you could find their kind pup Gunny hanging around. When you're here, you're at home. It's got the homey diner feel with great breakfast options (lunch too, but I'm a big fan of their breakfasts). I love their French toast, but my partner swears by the Nate plate (if biscuits and gravy are your thing - don't miss this option). It's also a great stop to fill up on gas and get some groceries or basic needs (just in case you forgot sunscreen). Regulars keep custom self- designed Lockport mugs hanging on the wall (if you find Lonny's, that's my dad). The rest of the staff at the Lockport are just as lovely as Nan and Deb. If you're driving past on 61, don't miss out on this little stop. If you want to enjoy the outdoors, you can also sit on the deck and enjoy the hummingbirds. I want to add: Things are not fast moving here. That's the beauty and the joy of the North Shore. If you want New York pace, this isn't the stop for you. Patience is a virtue. Embrace the culture of the shop. It's not a traditional restaurant. Water is serve yourself. If you want something from the grocery side for your meal (soda, Gatorade, etc), it's serve yourself. read more

I think the best way to describe this place is a back woods diner. The restaurant part is small, just 5 tables in the main dining room and a few more outside. It is family run and features a nice selection of hearty chow. We stopped in for breakfast with my wife ordering the breakfast sandwich and me, the Fur Traders French Toast with sausage links. It took a little more time than one would expect given that it's just breakfast, but the food arrived after around 10-15 minutes and was hot. Perhaps the glowing descriptions on the menu set the bar too high in my mind, but the French toast was about what you'd make yourself at home; nothing too special. We stopped here for lunch as one in our group had heard about the grill from a foodie friend. Ugh. Sorry, but our experience here can be summed up in two words: TWILIGHT ZONE My husband wanted a pop. It wasn't on the menu so the server (Chris) made him go out into the shop to get one. Isn't the server's job to serve? The food came out randomly. The table next to us who sat down after us got their food first. 2/3 did anyway. The third lady in the party got her food as her two friends had just finished. I heard one of the ladies ask the server if he could take the chips off her plate as she didn't want them. He went to the kitchen with the plate and then came back and asked if she could just eat around them. Wow. I got the sourdough pancake with the big story behind it. (The starter was from Alaska....the owner says.) It was pasty, thick, and tasteless. Could've been bisquick for all I know. One in our party got a sandwich with chips and got the bottom of the bag dumped on her plate. Crumbs. So what made the experience so strange wasn't just the server. The kitchen and the owner were equally involved with their policies. I understand this is a tiny town joint, BUT they have been in business for what looks like a long time and should have the hang of things by now. One person at all three tables was without food while others were eating. I could tell the server was just doing what he was told. Granted the owner was nice and had her hand in everything. I think that might be the problem. We won't be stopping back. BTW: The name of this place is Lockport Marketplace & Grill. It is also a gas station with a few food items. If you are after convenience items I recommend the Clearview General Store a little further north on the highway. I only mention this because it is tagged as a grocery store. read more

After driving past Lockport about a hundred times I made a point to stop there with my wife for breakfast today. We were greeted and seated right away and given menus. My wife ordered the breakfast burrito with hash browns and a gourmet coffee; I ordered the breakfast sandwich (eggs, cheese, bacon on an english muffin) with an apple juice and a blueberry scone. I was informed by the owner/waitress that there weren't any scones available since they had just went into the oven. Disappointed I followed her recommendation and got the hash browns as well. My first major complaint was when I heard an arriving customer greeted and informed that there were fresh scones just coming out of the oven. I held out hope that I would get the chance to change my order to what I originally wanted but no luck. Ten minutes later I get my sandwich with a side of hash browns. The meal was serviceable for a light breakfast/brunch. My wife seemed to enjoy her burrito and coffee but I was disappointed with my selection. Definitely a step above an egg McMuffin but not nearly as good as my wife makes when we are camping. Also I couldn't shake the feeling that the scone was really going to tie the meal together. After we finished up our meal we headed to the cash register to settle our bill and continue our day, satisfied with a light brunch but having expected more. Well we did get more. Our bill before tip, but after given a generous 10% local discount was $30.30. $30 for a breakfast sandwich (McMuffin), breakfast burrito, two sides of hash browns an apple juice and a coffee. I do not make a big deal about restaurant prices. I have no problem paying more for a nice meal but I couldn't believe this. I grabbed a take home menu to try and recalculate why our bill seemed so high and the only thing I can figure out is that my wife's coffee cost $15. I was sure to ask her a few more times during the day if she had enjoyed that $15 coffee. Since there was only one other group in our dining room at the time and the same owner/waitress rang up our bill, I don't think we got the wrong bill, of course it wasn't itemized, In short it will be a long time before I give the Lockport restaurant a second chance. I'm not sure if it was just a couple of honest mistakes or that poorly of a run business. I guess that's what places like Yelp are for. I have heard good things about Lockport from people before my visit and really wanted it to be another good dining option in the Grand Marais area. I'm just sharing my experience. read more

Interior decor and inventory give the impression that this place is a quaint mom-and-pop operation, like those general stores of yesteryear. Don't be fooled. This place is a cover-up for the owners, who happen to be real-estate agents in disguise. Be prepared to have your meal interrupted by a sales pitch. Co-owner Nan (the elderly woman) is especially adept at this. She'll be very interested in why you're visiting. But don't expect a cozy, two-way conversation. When she finds out that you're not interested in being a potential client, she turns chilly. Woe be unto those who don't fit her agenda. Co-owner Deb (the younger woman) is friendlier, and seems more interested in making conversation than in making a commission. This is the best treasure I have found yet on my many trips up north and little treks to find cool places. Lockport has been around for 100 years and it looks like a little old gas station from the outside. It however is not run down or closed down. I learned about Lockport from 2 local at different bars. Its a rave with the locals. In fact as it turns out when my mom worked at lutsen 30 years ago she used to go to Lockport with friends for supplies. They do have supplies. It has an old world 1920 general store feel with more than the little things you need. They have fresh pasties, gourmet coffee and fresh on site baked goods. The current owner has been there 16 years. If you go there go before 2pm. Go in the front door and walk to the back . There is a little rustic dining room with 4 tables. Its cozy and the food is simply great. It came in an old blue metal camping plate with chips in it. For me it added to the charm to be served on old camping style blue plated metal . I loved the food and the charm of the place. The owner was great and talked to us for 10 min about the history of Lockport. Its a sure place not to miss on a trip upnorth. We have going to this place since 1991 and it is now a "must do" for our son every time we are up here. Nan and Deb add to the great character of the place. The hash browns are the best, as well as the pancakes. For those that did not have a perfect experience, just know that everybody has an occasional bad day, especially when you work 60+ hours a week. read more

Do not eat here! The owners were extremely rude and mean. The server who also co-owns the place said "You're fat, you shouldn't eat so much." This place is over priced and I left hungry. We stopped for a few basics for a lunch hike. We got so much more! We ended up with two box lunches with focaccia pressed sandwiches that were excellent! The best part was the service. The very nice guy serving us gave several great suggestions for not only the hike, but the places to stop and eat along the hike. He was so nice and helpful! I was surprised that this place had a dining room in it, but I was so glad that my boyfriend and I went to check it out. The atmosphere was quiet and nice. The service was good and our waiter was attentive and talked about the area. I loved the decorations and the fact that tourists can give the owners pictures to put on the tables. I got the omelet, which I was happy about because it had both meat and vegetables in it. Both that and the hash browns were delicious. My boyfriend said the biscuits and gravy were the best he's ever had. We also bought a delicious apple pie and will be sure to go back next time we are in town. read more

I totally dig the vibe here; general store out front and little Northwoods dining room decked out with old skis and camp dinnerware in the back. Nan is a total sweetheart, very friendly and nice. I had no complaints with our simple breakfast of pancakes (she has a pancake starter batch that she's had for years, apparently), eggs, and toast. I didn't know sourdough pancakes existed until a recent trip up north; they are a must at the Lockport Market. It is half convenience store, half tiny breakfast and lunch joint. We ate here twice for breakfast-the menu is understandably small and a little pricier than places in Minneapolis, but the food is solid and the owners are nice. There are real estate fliers inside, but luckily our meals were sales pitch-free. With few breakfast options around Lutsen, this place is definitely worth checking out. PS the record eaten for all-you-can-eat sourdough pancakes is 17...I recommend just one or two. They look unassuming but are beasts. read more

This quaint place just north of Lutsen, is perfect. You spend a week in the wilderness and step into an establishment that doesn't jolt you back to civilization. It eases you back, plying you with home cooked goodness friendly charming proprietors that really make you feel like friends that have dropped in for a visit. Espresso drinks are good, baked goods of many varieties to tempt you and a very well stocked grocery for the tiny space. After reading the mixed reviews for this place, I went in with some reservations. As you can see from my rating, it met and exceeded my expectations! It's a small town, old fashioned, roadside restaurant and mini market. It's family owned. The food is all homemade and delicious. The service is a leisurely pace--so don't think you're going to rush through. But with great coffee and food, and ambiance that quaint and rustic, why rush it? The sourdough pancakes were delicious and the homemade salsa rivals any I've had in Los Angeles! The scrambled eggs were fluffy, and the hash browns were NOT greasy. We have been coming to Lockport for years and Nan and Deb are such gracious hosts. This last time Nan made a point of coming out to greet us and chat about our day and our dogs. Last Sunday, after needing a cup of coffee for the drive home that was stronger than the brown water we had at the place we were staying, we stopped at Lockport. Got our coffee and decided to stay for breakfast. It's a homey, family-run business and everyone there is outgoing and welcoming. The food was great, reasonably priced, and they reminded us to fill up our coffee cups as we left. And, they had the New York Times available to read over our breakfast. To top off a great experience, I discovered I left my favorite winter hat behind. I sent them a message when I got home. They found it in the parking lot and had it in the mail a day later. Lockport Market is a wonderful place to stop on the way north: excellent espresso, supplies, and warm welcome and atmosphere.

You know there were a few negatives on this place. There aren't many tables, the old lady running the place moves you after sitting, and the food takes a little time to get ot you. I had the Lockport Browns dish with the eggs and it was delicious. My fiancee had the endless stack of sourdough pancakes, but they were a little too thick and doughy. The pastries there are fantastic. Overall, I am a fan. read more

This was the best meal my husband and I had during our entire stay in Lutsen! The Lockport Marketplace and Deli is a small, quaint roadside cafe and market serving delicious, homemade food. The coffee is serve yourself, the table tops are covered in family photos and the view of wildflowers out the back windows is beautiful. Sit back, relax and enjoy! I had the biscuit and gravy with hashbrowns and eggs. Don't let "biscuit" fool you! The one biscuit is huge! It was more than enough for me. The sausage gravy was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice. The hashbrowns were crispy, without being greasy and the over easy eggs on top were cooked to perfection! My husband had the all you can eat sourdough pancakes. They were very tasty, the perfect balance of light and fluffy yet filling! It's places like these that make me take vacations on the north shore. When you first walk in, you just see typical gas station stuff, but there's a dining room in the back. It's not very big, but it is well kept and cozy--like visiting grandma's house. We walked in for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We were the only customers in at the time, so we got wonderful service! More people showed up throughout out meal, so it wasn't creepy. The food was great. We heard the meals were pretty big, so we split the honeymoon breakfast combo. If you like breakfast meats (bacon, sausage ham), you need to try their sausage! It was all so tasty. And Nan, the manager/owner is a very nice and friendly old lady. She took the time to learn where we lived and how our trip was going, and then she gave us a short history of the place she now runs.
