I previously rated this place 5 stars and the only reason I'm changing it is because we got two drinks today and didn't care for either of them--which is a personal preference. I for the latte with orange and cardamom and the cardamom (which is a spice I like) was overwhelming. The orange was a nice note, but not enough to balance the cardamom. My friend had the flat white and it wasn't anything special. My friend got the lemon crinkle cookie and said that "it seems like there's a sugar ration up here" Because the cookie wasn't sweet and although it had a faint lemon flavor, she said it wasn't as lemony as she expected a lemon cookie to be. We visited Crosby Bakery to pick up some breakfast pastries to eat before hiking around the state parks for the day. We arrived a little before 9 on a Tuesday and it was full inside. Almost all tables inside and out were taken and there was a small line of 6-7 people ahead of us to order. The line didn't take too long, although we had to wait a bit for a table to open up. Caramel Roll ($5) - I wish this was served heated up! While slightly warm still, the interior pastry is denser and drier than I expected. Especially the rolled and baked bottom that makes a harder crust, while I wanted a roll that was tender throughout. Before rolling, cinnamon and warming spices are sprinkled on, but it's not a very strong flavor next to all the caramel on top. The top is sticky, sugary, and sweet. It's not particularly nutty or toasty caramel in flavor though, which is puzzling given the caramelized brown color of the topping. (4/5) Almond Croissant ($6.50) - This quite a tall croissant, with a large layer of lightly crunchy and crumbly almond frangipane baked evenly on top. It's heavily almond flavored, like tons of almond extract is added into the topping. The interior croissant is laminated very well with an excellent honeycomb structure. It's flaky and crunchy on the outside, and moist and chewy inside although not extremely buttery in taste. There's a bit of paste-like and coarse almond frangipane piped into the interior that has an almost alcoholic taste. Not my favorite filling. (4/5) Crosby Bakery definitely punches above its weight, especially for a bakery in a small tourist town. I did not expect to find such a good bakery in Grand Marais! Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms. So many choices at this lovely store front scratch bakery. I narrowed my choice to the croissant egg bake. Flaky, buttery, cheese, bacon and egg. The golden brown flaky crust was perfect. It filing and I didn't want it to end. I also had cafe au lait. They do roast their own beans. Popular choices were sticky buns. Carrot cake. Everything is presented so enticing. Love this place and have been a fan of Hana's baked goods since she was selling them at the farmer's market! Love the cruffin and their house roasted coffee. I used to love their Maple Pecan cookies and always got one every time I went. But the recipe has changed. They used to be a bit chewy on the inside and a little crispy on the outside but now they are like cake and I can taste the levening, like they used too much baking powder. Adorable bakery and coffee shop in Grand Marais! I was actually heading towards the donut shop but saw the variety of baked goods in the window and thought I would give this shop a try since I hadn't been in here before. I AM SO GLAD I DID!! I ordered a latte and the carrot cookie for my husband & I got myself a caramel roll. The caramel roll was HUGE! I got full 2/3 way through but I'm no quiter so you can bet I hung out until my plate was clean! It had more of a butterscotch flavor than caramel but delicious nonetheless and sooo fluffy and not hard at all. My husband enjoyed his coffee but was RAVING about the carrot cookie. He doesn't typically like frosting so I was a bit worried (it's a bit like an oatmeal creme pie but with carrot cake cookie) but he said it was the perfect ratio of cookie to frosting. He let me have "one bite only" and made me instantly regret only ordering one. Tried Crosby Bakery for the first time this weekend and loved it! We had an artichoke croissant, almond croissant, and a caramel roll -- everything was fresh and delicious. The building is brand new, very clean, and has both indoor and outdoor seating. If you sit outside, just be aware that the local birds are very bold -- one even landed on my husband's leg! I tried this bakery out for a mocha and some baked goods. We tried the Ginger Molasses Cookie, as well as a few of their Raspberry White Chocolate Scones! They were so delicious! The scones weren't dry and the white chocolate was a great touch of sweetness. The cookie blew my mind cause of the dried ginger inside, which also added such a good texture. The almond croissant I had here was HUGE amongst the top I've had. I loved that it was not sickeningly sweet, just sweet enough and you could really taste the almonds. Incredible pastry.
