The course is relatively flat, which makes it great for walking - except for the distance between some holes. Even while carting it can feel like a long haul from one green to the next tee box. I'm not sure if that could be rearranged or if they're just stuck with that layout. Either way, I tend to cart there. There is plenty of water on this course, and always where my ball wants to go! This is a very challenging course if you're not the straightest hitter. Most of the holes require some sort of control, so if your driver is erratic, you might want to put it in time-out and tee off with an iron. I've always found the greens and fairways in very good shape - the greens can run fast, so be prepared - try to stay below the hole if you have that kind of control. For some reason, it always seems to be windy when I'm golfing here. Perhaps that is because the course is so flat and in an open part of the county. Of course, the wind *always* wants to blow my shots into the water! LOL I've scored okay here, but generally feel like I'm struggling through the round. A lot of thought goes into which club you will hit. If the yardage says "7-iron", the wind might require you to hit a 6-iron so you don't fall short into water. This course really makes you think. The Meadows is a good test - if you feel like you're hitting well, come here to see if you really are. You won't find a lot of woods getting in your way, but the water makes up for that... I love the location in Waunakee - very convenient for many parts of the Madison area. I'd like to see them run some more deals. For the money, I'd rather play elsewhere, but I ccould be lured in with a nice weekday deal.

I've been golfing Deer Valley for many years, and I love it there - it's my "go to" course,…read moreespecially when I can't find a great deal on something else. First, Deer Valley is an affordable course. I love to golf, but can't afford to shell out top-shelf prices for a round. HOWEVER, Deer Valley isn't exactly a cheap "hacker's course". There's a wide variety of hole styles to keep your attention, highlighted by their signature par-3 #5 that takes you 120 yards out, but straight down to a soft green. The view is intimidating, but it's a hole you could shoot at for hours. Immediately after #5, you're challenged to drive over the rocky, steep face that you just came down. There are holes with blind tee shots over hills, hard dog-leg turns, and plenty of terrain to navigate. I haven't even mentioned hole #1 - a long par 5 up a big hill (and almost always into the wind). Once you get past that hole, the rest doesn't feel too bad. Deer Valley is extremely scenic with tee boxes overlooking vast valleys. In the fall, the colors are breathtaking. Being removed from the big city, it's one of the most peaceful courses I've been on. Keep an eye on your ball, but don't forget to take in the scenic views and watch for wildlife! It's beautiful there! The new "Valley" nine is nice, but I still like the Ridge and Prairie best. Valley is a little tighter and most of the holes run in, you guessed it, the valley... Definitely a course worth hitting. If you're a prude and want to be addressed as "Mister", have your clubs cleaned by some high school boy working for tips, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a course that is great bang for the buck, to hang out with some friends and have a great time - hit Deer Valley.

You can almost got on with short notice and even fees during peak times are not bad. The course is pretty well maintained and good for beginner and intermediate play. And although the driving range is out of the way, you can get a token and a glass of wine on the cheap However, there are some super annoying things. I don't love teeing off on a par 3. There are not a lot of water hazards. But the most bothersome thing is the lax standards for a country club. People in jeans, t-shirts, spandex leggings and tank tops. You see groups of 5 and 6 frequently. People have their kids hanging on to the back of the cart and driving around. It's just not classy. And we got paired with some moron with a Trump towel and crap on his bag. Leave your nonsense at home. Baraboo already has a garbage reputation - no need to reinforce it.

The course has a lot of character with mature trees and lots of elevation changes. Watch out for #8! It feels like a whole they wedged into the middle of the course and it doesn't quite fit right. A good tee shot might give you a good look through a narrow opening in the trees to an uphill approach to the green. Figure on a drive, pitch, then long club to get to the green. It is what it is. Other holes shorten your tee shot with a creek, ravine, or other feature. If you like to let the big dog eat, you'll have to wait a few holes. I don't think we hit driver until #5. There are plenty of scenic views as it sits at the foot of the hills of Baraboo. It's quite beautiful, especially with the fall colors in full swing. Watch for the deals and hit this course when you get a chance. A few memorable holes will stick in your head and make you want to come back for another round!

They made sure our special day went smooth, they coordinated with the vendors and were there if anything went wrong. Aside from the wonderful coordinators at The Oaks, the venue itself is great! The tent is spacious enough yet still feels cozy and has a great relaxed atmosphere. Bathrooms are located inside the clubhouse, but not too far of a walk from the venue space. I would 100% recommend The Oaks as a place to have your wedding.

It was a beautiful morning - slightly overcast, the rain threat was mostly gone. It was going to…read morebe a great day for golf. Could anything ruin it? Sure, but not this day... not this round... I hadn't golfed Lake Wisconsin Country Club before, but it was on the to-do list, and today was the day. The course was in great shape, especially after all the rain and being right on the Wisconsin River. Water was no issue, thankfully. The surroundings are beautiful, and I can only imagine it gets better in the fall. Trees, hills, the river, the dam... Additionally, the electric carts helped the "back to nature" feel - no extra noise or stink. Love that. The course was playing short today - a lot of the tees had been moved up from their usual spots (one of our group plays there often, so we had that insight). I thought the holes were of a good variety - some straight, some dog-legs (both left and right), and some tough decisions (go for it with driver, or lay up with iron). Bunkers are well placed, but not a nightmare. The layout was unique, starting with a par 4/5/4/5/4 and then hitting back-to-back par 3's on the back 9. The holes run along each other at times, so on a busy day, you would need to keep your head on a swivel, but this morning was peaceful and we weren't too worried about other golfers. The pro shop is adequate, but the building itself was a bit confusing (finding bathrooms among the offices, pro shop, etc.). But who cares? I'm there to golf. I wasn't a fan of the driving range being tucked between three of the holes - that felt a little out of place and dangerous (had there been folks at the range). Will I come here again? Shoobetcha.

On the contrary, I've never experienced a Country Club littered with range balls on multiple holes; this was very disappointing and impacted play for more than one golfer. It was also unfortunate that the entire facility did not have a club washer, despite every hole providing a functional ball washer. Additionally, my group and I were surprised to not see a single cart girl during our 18 holes on a Sunday afternoon. Lastly, the most ridiculous part of my experience that they had a cart path/residential driveway go through the middle of the fairway on Hole 16-that's not something you see even at the worst public city courses! I can say confidently that Lake Wisconsin CC is one of the worst courses that I've golfed in Wisconsin and easily the worst Country Club that I've ever experienced.

Look no further, west-siders, here's a hidden gem! Westbrook Hills is found just a chuck west of Madison and is a great place to hit a quick round. No clubhouse, no staff, no tee times - you just show up, stuff your $10 in the "honor box" and away you go. Is it a perfect course? Nah - few are, really. It's a mix of par 3 and par 4 holes, so you can bash a few drivers during your round while tuning your irons. Being shorter (par 33), a round doesn't take all that long. WHY IS THIS COURSE GOOD? - great for new golfers - par 4s allow you to let the big dog eat a few times - no pressure, not complicated. Show up, pay, hit - easy to walk. (no carts available at the course) WHAT THIS COURSE ISN'T: - swanky or uptight - horribly complicated - expensive I like to hit a formal round of golf, usually. But sometimes you just want to get in a quick round before spending the rest of the day on yard work or something. This fills that need, and I'll be hitting this more often.

There's quite a few tables and chairs, but even so on a busy summer evening it might be full. As good as the food is here, the service can be a little iffy, and the bar service can be very slow. This evening three of us ordered gin and tonics which came without limes in them. This is like sacrilegious to gin and tonic drinkers. You shouldn't have to ask for limes in this drink. The other thing that was irritating is that salt and pepper was not on the table and butter did not come with the entrées which included baked potatoes. It was brought on request but it's just odd that they wouldn't have have these things on the tables already. Our waitress was a high intern so we went easy on her and hope she learned something from us. We still tipped her well. That said it's a great Wisconsin fish fry place and worth stopping for.
