After spending several hours trying to catch up with the culprit who's made off with it, you call SLO PD, all the while thinking that a missing cellphone probably won't be something they'll have time to help with beyond taking down your information over the phone. However, now imagine that two officers not only meet you at the cell's last known location, they spend the next hour-plus helping you determine where it currently is, then go into the residence building to try to retrieve it. We were so very impressed with the thoughtful determination of these officers. Their time, care and diligence went far beyond the call of duty, and we couldn't be more appreciative and thankful to them. There are still heroes amongst us.

I like to go to places where nothing is happening. You know, dogs humping in the street, people asleep on benches and traffic so sparse you could lay down in the middle of the road for a tan. Lompoc has murals on the buildings that are interesting to see. Sofie and I enjoyed walking around and looking at them. Did you know Lompoc was founded by a bunch of women who wanted to start a colony of people who would be free of alcohol? It didn't work though... where there are women, there will be men and where there are men... well, you will have to investigate the murals to get the whole story. When I took a photo of the IOOF sign, the owner of the store said, "Hey! I can take that down and sell it to you if you want...". I'd really like to have that sign, but I'm not sure where I would put it on the estate. You really must have a two story buildinjg for an IOOF sign.

Unfortunately, some of locations are closed due to the Pandemic such as the classic Greek Revival Lompoc History Museum which was the former city library as well as the "not listed in the walk" iconic, classic Streamline Art Deco Mike's Bar that's on Ocean Avenue just east of H Street. Takes about an hour leisurely walking past many murals, al fresco paintings with no stops inside noted sites or lunching in such noted restaurants like Sissy's where a hot mushroom salad and coconut cream pie awaits. Great way to intimately get to know a small, military base town surrounded by famous wineries in Santa Barbara County. 4- stars

With that changed my understanding, respect , and support of our local law enforcement has grown immensely. When faced with difficult emotional and physical situations where potentially laws are being broken having an organization who sets a very high standard of integrity and gives new meaning to 'protect and serve' is so reassuring. My family and I now when we see a member of the Sheriff department nearly feel compelled to go say thank you. Though all members of the department that we have spoken with have been helpful one member in particular stands out. Sargent Martin Rose his professionalism and 'caring' are to be commended on many levels. Thank you

This County Sheriff's office has some serious issues. First off, why doesn't Santa Barbara follow…read morethe SIDS protocol in an obvious SIDS death? My son passed away at 3 1/2 mos while at daycare in 2003 while propped on his side with stuffed animals. Sheriff Todaro told us it was a classic SIDS case when he called our house at 2:00 am. the day our son passed. He also stated that when he was a baby he had stuffed animals in the crib and didn't think there was anything wrong with the stuffed animals propping our son up. He wanted to know why we didn't wait for him at the hospital to show up......guess he figured our 2 year old didn't need any sleep. The medical examiner stated on his death certificate that he died from Waterhouse Friedricksen's Syndrome. After a couple of doctors observed the autopsy report, they didn't agree with what was written. I then contacted Dr. Henry Krous at San Diego Children's Hospital and he did a second autopsy. The slides were obtained from Santa Barbara where they were cut in half. Dr. Henry Krous's second autopsy revealed Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I then contacted Sheriff Todaro and he that he would put the second opinion autopsy on file. I then asked why Santa Barbara didn't follow the SIDS protocol. He was defensive and said that they did and that our son had an infection that spread very quickly. We told him our son had a crying incident, but that had nothing to do with his death. Our son never even had a cold in his short 3 1/2 mos of life. When we spoke to Sheriff Todaro to retrieve our son's car seat, I mentioned to him that I had some information on the Kym Morgan case. I told him that case always had bothered me and that I had possibly seen the men when I worked at McDonald's. He remembered the case quite well, and stated that he was a fresh-faced cherubed boy just starting out and that was his first case. He could care less about any information I had for him. I then asked him about the smell and the morgue with the neighbors....he wouldn't discuss it. I seriously hope that A-Hole is enjoying his damn pension for not doing his damn job. DO YOU NOT HAVE ANY BRAINS OVER THERE???? WTF? I have yet to see a SIDS diagnosis come out of Santa Barbara. That medical examiner hopefully is rattling some metal bars.

And the music was 10/10! Loved the 80s and classics when they weren't being remixed in with repetitive yelling and banging on cells from less mentally stable inmates. Otherwise the most grimy and unsanitary establishment to ever exist. No soap, hand sanitizer, face masks, or signs of being cleaned in the last century. The bologna sandwich lunch still haunts me. No matter how hungry you are, please don't give in. Best to use it as a pillow to sleep with (learned that from my cell mates after the damage was already done). The most valuable thing I gained from this experience is an appreciation for the little things in life, including basic essentials and comforts that I definitely did not receive here XD but that we take for granted everyday. I hope if you ever get yourself into a pickle that you stay positive and kind and remember that it probably can be worse. Though I heard prisons in the state have a lot of cool programs and free education etc now.. Despite this, no plans to return. And I hope to never see these familiar faces again (:

Critiques often focus on whether the department's training and accountability systems adequately prevent excessive force, especially in encounters with vulnerable populations such as the homeless or mentally ill. 2. Transparency and Accountability: There have been complaints that the department isn't always fully transparent with the public regarding internal investigations or disciplinary actions. This can create a perception that officers aren't held accountable for misconduct. 3. Relations with Marginalized Communities: Like many law enforcement agencies, SBPD has faced criticism for its interactions with marginalized groups. Issues cited include racial profiling, biased policing, or failure to engage meaningfully with the community in building trust. 4. Resource Allocation: Some critics argue that the SBPD prioritizes certain types of enforcement (like traffic citations or minor offenses) over community support, mental health intervention, and crime prevention programs. This can leave systemic problems unaddressed. 5. Staffing and Training Challenges: Santa Barbara is a tourist-heavy area with seasonal population spikes. Critics say that the department sometimes struggles with staffing and training to handle peak demands safely and fairly, leading to lapses in service or inconsistent enforcement. This isn't an attack on every officer or the whole department--many officers work hard and ethically--but it highlights structural and community concerns that have been raised over time.
