This group apparently needed seats more than I did.

Very cool tasting room, great atmosphere, but horrible waitstaff. No customer service. There were no tables available when we arrived, on a busy weekend, so my wife and I sat at the bar. We finally snagged a table, and were almost immediately asked to move by an employee doing some sort of tasting tour for guys wearing Peter Pan hats (seriously). She told us that everyone was super friendly so we should try sharing a table with someone else, even though there was nowhere else to sit. The loud group took over our table, so we moved back to the bar. Looking on the back side of the bar, there was a half finished plate of food, chips and candy wrappers, amongst dirty dishes. The group of guys finally left to the brewery's other building, after about 10 minutes (not sure why I had to give up my seat as a paying customer, especially to a group that wasn't staying, but I obliged nonetheless). The last straw was when I came back to order another round of tasters, my bartender, no joke, was chewing her fingernails as she poured my beer. None of the bartenders looked like they wanted to be there, and the one who asked us to move has the worst attitude. Despite all this, the beer is pretty decent. I tried six tasters, the Texan Tea was fantastic, as was the Three Weiss Monkeys, nothing else was anything spectacular. All in all, nice place to hang out and get affordable beer, just hope they work on training their staff in customer service and basic hygiene.

Not only were the drinks delicious, but the bartender was very kind and helped us make our decision. I love the decor and the location, it's a 10/10 must-visit next time you're in London.

The bartender let us know that while the sign read food was served upstairs only, they were under construction so food would be served downstairs in the main pub area instead--but not until 5 (it was around 4:30 pm). We thanked him and decided to grab a drink and wait for food service. The menu of house ales, lagers, bitters, etc. + spirits was one I later saw at 1-2 other pubs who must share the same brewery. I tried a couple of beers and both were great. My wife had a cocktail which she enjoyed. The most noticeable thing at first was how quiet this pub is-- you could hear a pin drop. This likely changes later in the evening, but without music playing and the scattered patrons softly chatting at their tables, it was very quiet. Which really worked for us as we fought jet lag. We ordered food at the bar, my wife had fish and chips and I had the sausage and mash platter topped with onion rings. Both were delicious and fairly priced. This was all in all a great first pub to visit in London.

After leaving a different brewery-branded craft beer bar very close by (three guesses...), a friend…read moreand I headed here in search of more delicious beer in a calmer and quieter atmosphere. One of my regular bus routes goes right by the front doors, so from the moment I saw the construction going on and the Goose Island stencils on the windows, I'd been super excited to try this place once it opened. I was looking forward to finally sitting down inside. The brewpub, which occupies a ground-floor unit, is definitely spacious. The bar is on the left as you walk in, with a row of high-top tables to the right. In back up a couple of stairs is another seating area and the brew equipment. This means Goose Island has more space than some other bars in Shoreditch, which helped the atmosphere feel calmer than where we had been before. And we didn't need to shout to hear each other. The friendly bartender helped us sample a number of brews on tap before we made up our minds on a Gillian (strawberry honey gose) and an IPA. We also perused the food menu, and shared an order of fries (£3) which were seriously nothing to write home about. Familiar with the well-designed, internationally-inspired, beer-paired food menus at other Goose Island locations in places like Seoul and Shanghai, I was disappointed to see their London offerings. They've opted for a sort of Chicago-inflected Americana with pizzas, subs, and a few sides. I'd call it rather boring. Sure, the 16" pizzas coming out to other tables smelled good, but for between £14-16, I'd expect something more special. In fact, I'd expected something more special in general. The generic exposed brick design that's probably supposed to mirror "gritty" Chicago felt hollow. The answer that I got when I asked what makes the 312 an "urban" wheat beer (that it's "urban" because it's from Chicago) forced an awkward laugh from my throat. The nicest thing was the bathrooms which, though I deplore gender segregation--come on people, go unisex, it's just a pot to piss in--provided three "F" to one "M" and had great-smelling soap. Kinda sad though if that's what impressed me most. I probably won't be back.
