The staff here are passionate about cycling as a sport and probably have been since the day they first sat on a tricycle. As well as having a huge range of mountain, racing and all kinds of bikes, they are immensely knowledgeable and good at repair jobs. On the downside, it is often quite difficult to get served you really do have to fight for their attention. Be prepared for a bit of cockney banter and you can even haggle down the price on occasions. This is nothing like shopping at Evans Bike Superstore, but so much more of a personal and interesting experience.

Once I got there, they got the bike set up quickly, provided useful info (the brakes are opposite of what they are in U.S. - good to know!). The bike itself was excellent and exactly what I needed for the ride. They even picked up the bike at the end for a small fee. They made what could have been a complex situation super easy. On the assumption that all West London residents drive Range Rovers I was pleasantly surprised by Cyclopolis, a small but perfectly formed 'half bike shop, half workshop' in Balham. So was it better than the inimitable 14 bike co, you might ask? Clearly not; but it's great for when you want a little splash of quality and style in amongst all the usual practical items. Like decent Kevlar tyres. A respectable range of Brooks saddles. More Abus products than you'd imagine in one place. Very well stocked indeed. they also do the bike to work scheme, if you are as scarred by Evans as I am. Oh, and there's stuff for your kids if you want to get them hooked too. It's more of a shop for people who ride Pashleys or off road, but they know what to do with fixed gear and single speed lovers too. No, and I don't mean slapping them.

However once you're in, the staff are friendly and helpful, and I think offers good value. The shop is quite small, and has all the essentials, but not much beyond that, so if you are looking for the latest Northwave jersey, you will need to try somewhere else. It is more of a functional shop catering to people who are using their bike to get places rather than purely for exercise or sport. They have a plentiful supply of florescent yellow plastic, which is most important for cycling on London's roads.

You will. But I have to feel sorry for the blokes who work here. Their attitude to anyone who walks through the door with anything less than some new-season titanium-alloy construction is a sneering shame. I should have been warned after the first time I visited I was told I should wash my bike more often. F*** you, I thought, I happen to like the mud and rust effect. I stood there for 10 minutes, ignored by both staff. One of them was just reading his computer screen and didn't bother looking up, the other didn't acknowledge me until he had finished with the customer. When I was finally seen they were worse than useless. Didn't have any advice, said they didn't have much in. The second time I went in the bloke tried to push a second-hand bike on me for £300. Once, I would have forgotten it but this happened both times I went in. I felt like I'd been treated with contempt & totally unvalued. It's a joke of a shop & I won't be going back.

This shop has been here for many years and I remember it as a child (which was, er hem, a long time ago). Anyway the staff are friendly and were able to fix my bike within the afternoon. Seem to be well stocked with accessories and bikes...the shop also had a good vibe, with customers passing through who seemed familiar to staff which is good to see. The shop is also located on the London to Brighton route in case you breakdown!!!
