As you can no doubt tell from my photo, I loved this place.
This was my nearest museum when I lived in Tooting Bec and its rather limited opening hours and free admission only served to urge me inside one Saturday, accompanied by a friend easily bribed/persuaded by beer.
It may not look like much from the outside (except for an uncanny resemblance to the Wimbledon Sewing Machine Company in which it's found), but with somewhat limited resources they've done well, stitching together hundreds of sewing machines from the last two centuries in just a few rooms.
These fine examples of mechanical majesty include the very first model by Singer. You can only imagine my excitement at seeing that.
If you're in the vicinity of this marvellous museum on the first Saturday of a month (providing it's between 2pm and 5pm), then it might be worth a look. If you're into that kind of thing. Or it's hailing. read more
